It's a shame the better polymer deck versions are so expensive now, finally need to replace a 33 year old HR 173 (only because a lump of concrete bent the main shaft)

Have you tried to straighten it? It sounds drastic, but I have twice used a sledgehammer and successfully pretty well straigthened two B&S engines. What have you got to lose?

Take out the spark plug, take off the blade, best to drain fuel tank and oil, then turn mower upside-down,
Turn shaft and carefully measure against a point on the deck to determine where you have to hit the shaft to straighten it, i.e. when the measurement is the least. Mark it, then swing the sledge hammer between your legs and strike the shaft squarely. It will prob take a few goes - check by rotating and measuring after each hit .
My Mountfield is still going years later.
Ok, thanks, I'll give it a proper go (I did sort of try what you said but in a big girls blouse kind of way with a small hammer).
