This looks very like the Singer 2250....

The Aldi price seems to be a lot less than the price at Argos or Tescos.

It's obviously just a basic home machine for this spec and price.

This machine is no good for a seamstress, its not going to last long if used for long hours. A seamstress would probably want an industrial machine or possibly an old Singer/Bernina.

There's a few heavy duty machines on ebay. I've just picked a JUKI DDL-55-2 for £99.

It won't do any fancy stitching but will last forever :o)

It is a decent machine for home use, domestic machines are always flimsy though for constant work. What stitch type do you want to achieve, if you want a lockstitch then as already stated you can pick up bargain Juki's and brother industrial machines fairly cheaply on ebay, remember to check that they have a single phase motor fitted suitable for home use and remember these machines are very fast compared to domestic machines.

Just bought a spanking new Singer Confidence 7470. Hadn't sewn anything since I was 15, am now over twice that age (and a bit more). Best gadget I have bought in a long long time. I now have a hobby...yay! Also wanting to use it as a small home business, making crafts etc. It's so easy to use! It has around 50 different stitches, embroiders letters (there is a cheaper model without this but same in everything else) and it has an overlocking stitch.
I bought it in a Singer shop in Woking, after a lot of research online ( and I really do like to do my research on everything!). It cost £299, cheaper than the supermarkets and elsewhere. They have to be competitive to keep up their sales as all small shops are closing. I had already decided to buy from a Singer shop, before I had even seen the price as so many have closed down. PLUS online stores don't have the invaluable aftersales care and service. Bought 2 weeks ago and already been back to the shop 3 times for advice etc. Owner very happy to give m a little lesson, using my model sewing machine and says I can go back anytime for quick tips/lessons and advice on my machine. So in my opinion, this time it is not always about the final price, but what you get for your money!
Final Score: High Street 1 - online store nil.

Go to Amazon.com (US not UK site) and read mixed reviews of Singer 2250.
    Bobbin jams!

Don't be fooled in to thinking this machine is better than it is just because of the name, it is a Chinese made machine that will appear under a number of different names. There is no Singer Sewing Machine company any more it disappeared many years ago, this is simply someone has acquired the name when they closed and it is being used to brand Chinese produced machines.

Don't get me wrong it is a good price for a sewing machine, but the machine will only be for a bit of home repair work not for heavy use by an enthusiast or someone who works as a seamstress. Just don't be taken in by the name as it means nothing.

My friend has some basic sewing skill and she went to buy one today. She said for that price she cannot complain as she just wants to do some simple work with it. She also said Argos is more expensive.

My store had three left. And at 69.99 cant go wrong.
