Yes they are.

You need a PS3 singstar game first then you can swap discs and put the PS2 disc in the PS3.

This update was released around Xmas 08/Jan 09. Update allowing this to work will be downloaded by the PS3 when you run PS3 singstar game.

(Collated from my comments in a previous "For Sale/Trade" thread)

As mentioned above, a recent update to the PS3 SingStar software allows the use of the PS2 SingStar titles with the PS3 (regardless of which PS3 console model used; i.e. both the 60Gb model with the standard PS2 title backward compatibility support, and any other PS3 console that does not support this feature).

You need a PS3 "SingStar" title first, but after that initial purchase you can now access the tracks on the PS2 versions...

"Exciting news on SingStar backwards compatibility!"

Exciting stuff just in from Sony…

It’s the first anniversary of SingStar for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have a special celebration gift for loyal PlayStation®2 (PS2™) SingStars: the ability to play our collection of PS2 discs through SingStar PS3! Arriving right in time for the holiday SingStar party season, a free online update to SingStar PS3 will allow PS2 SingStars to upgrade to PS3 safe in the knowledge that they can take their whole collection of discs with them – while PS3 SingStars can now dust off their PS2 discs and relive the SingStar parties of holidays gone by.

All you’ll need to do is connect to PlayStation®Network when the online update goes live on December 16th – 10:00 AM GMT. Once it’s downloaded (automatically), you’re good to go. Start your SingStar PS3 session as normal by loading any SingStar PS3 disc – then, you’ll be able to swap it for any PS2 disc for the rest of the session.

"SingStar update 2.40 - Coming Soon"

...Further to feedback about some issues with the disc swapping feature in SingStar on PS3, the SingStar Team will soon release release [! – yes, so good they’ll do it twice – fp.] version 2.40 of the game. The fixes included in this update are:

* You can now quit the game when using a PS2 disc.
* You can now quit the game when using the SingStar ABBA disc, when an ABBA wallpaper is selected, and a disc swap is done.
* The PS2 disc swap now works with PS2 SingStar 80s Sweden and Benelux

The tracks downloaded from the "SingStore" reside in the "Game Data Utility" & "Saved Data Utility" areas of your PS3 hard drive.

The tracks accessible from the PS2 discs remain on those DVDs. You need to have the discs to play these tracks on each use.

(The same tracks may well be available via the "SingStore". If you wish to retain them on your hard drive you will need to pay to download them).

yeah it's great with ps2 compatibility, I have just the one ps3 disc and swap between the other .... 10 x ps2 discs... slightly obsessed I suppose :)
a good find and some VERY good info. Thanks. Now if only the kids would let me on the ps3.
