Does anyone know if you can run these from a battery so as to make them portable? Many thanks.

These run at 230v / 500w. You'd need a hefty inverter to run them from a battery ... and an even heftier battery.

You'd be better off running them from a small petrol genny if you want to operate them other than from the mains.

good price, no netto in scotland :(

I bought one last year when they were 4.99 and it blew up within 30 minutes of use, rendering it useless.

Voted cold, because they're cheap and ****.

they are this price anyway aint they? got one in Wickes last year, and screwfix - paid about the same.

HOT! just bought 2 from B&Q for around £12.99 EACH! 1 has already blown up after heavy use anyway - im told these halogen bulbs can be quite temperamental, irrelevant of whether its from netto or not, so great find H&R

Yes that's quite true there are handling precautions and in operation they don't like vibration or being too far off horizontal, but a branded lamp from the likes of Osram will last a great deal longer. They don't tend to explode or make a mess of the reflector either when they expire because they're internally fused.

Why didn't you take it back for a refund or replacement? You obviously were unlucky and got a defective one.

I bought 2 last year and both are still going strong

Though I'm not quite sure how or what 'blew up'. It's a light with a bulb. The bulb is replaceable and the only part that can really 'blow up'

Refer to OP for price at screwfix. I'll let you look up how much they are in Wickes ... but they are a damn sight more than £4.99 ;-)
(Hint: try £12.72 @ Wickes!)

Good for guerrila film makers aswell!

Because a) It was only a fiver and b) I'm not risking having another one explode.

How are you not sure what blew up when you just said it yourself in the second sentance?

The bulb exploded, violently, rendering the lamp useless? Is it really that hard to comprehend?

Yes it really is that hard to comprehend how a broken light bulb renders the complete lamp useless - why didn't you just get a new bulb if you didn't want to take the light back?

Granted, the bulb should last longer than 30 mins, and they do - mine are still going strong a year later.

However, handling is important. You mustn't get any grease on the bulb e.g. from touching it with bare hands, or if you do you need to remove it.
I'm sure you'll claim you didn't touch the bulb yourself, but how can you be sure no one else did before you even got the lamp?
Also the bulb should be kept horizontal whilst hot (including whilst cooling down)

If you don't care about throwing a fiver away, can you throw any more you don't need this way please? :)

According to you you voted cold "because it is cheap and ****"
Well ignoring the swear word (if you haven't the vocabulary to explain without swearing it's probably unimportant anyway), I guess that means I should expect you'll vote every deal cold because this is HUKD where the idea is to post deals that are cheap.

I'll make it nice and simple

a) Bulb blows up
b) Shards from said broken bulb impact the inside of the lamp, destroying the bulb holder and the reflector

The bulb came in a sealed wrap, so I seriously doubt anyone touched it...

And yes, I voted cold because in my experience the whole appliance was rendered useless in half an hour? Is that allowed?

I'm sorry, what's your point?

Are you actually in love with this lamp? Why are you defending it so vehemently?

All I've done is posted my experience with this product, said that it is a waste of money and you jump down my throat? Is everyone on HUKD like you? You have repeatedly misinterpreted my comments about the lamp self-destructing, and obviously gone digging through my posts in order to prove some sort of point. I'm confused now.

Oh, I see, you're the OP of this thread, that explains why you got wound up. Awwwwh.
