I remember when you didn't buy a modem, you rented one from BT (or whatever they were called then) and it was the size of a large briefcase. That was before desktop computers had been invented.

Some people in the country live too far away from the exchange I presume; I couldn’t get broadband when I lived in the wilds of mid Wales.
It’s also handy for emergencies if your broadband fails and you want to check email.

Modems are still useful - I use my modem, YAC and some answerphone software to notify me on my laptop and media center when someone is calling and who, and to email me the answerphone message. It's a fun project! Although I cldnt say whether this modem would be supported.
