To be Honest if you are serious about buying a new car most main dealers can arrange for you to borrow a demonstrator for 24/48hrs
Did anyone take advantage of the deal 2 or 3 years back where renault let you try out a Laguna or Megane for a weekend free of charge via Hertz?
Low insurance excess and Hertz dropped the car off and picked up from the house.
Now that was a deal!
hc4eva
I've never taken one of these long test drive deals before.....are there any costs you can incur? Do you just pay the petrol or what?

You will be responsible for fuel, there will most likely be a limited milesage allowed, any damage etc is your responsibility and there will be a high insurance excess through the dealership, unless your insurance company allow you to add within your policy. Only worth test driving one of these if you are seriously considering buying one imo

does this mean you could get a free car hired for a day

na there has got to be a catch......

what do they ask you to fill in the about the test section why do you want to test it... you say because you are offering it.....

I am looking at the £8995 1.2 SE deal which is currently available in silver or denim blue - would this one be better?? It's a solid paint, not sure about the grey/ black (I'd need to see it in person). I always look ahead to re-sale so would like to hear which one would be easier to sell or hold value better, etc.

People actually buy Skodas?

Would be worth it if selling for £200 or so.

Where have you been for the last 20 years - lurking under a rock somewhere?

Not sure why people don't like this car probably the same people that drive bland boring vauxhalls.Friend has this in the monte carlo spec and it's a decent well made car far better then any Ford or vauxhalls at the same price.Engines a bit gutless but what do you expect. If I needed a second car I'd certainly be interested.
Vauxhalls look ten times better than this monstrosity. As for being well made I think Ford's have it beat nowadays. Skoda's do seem to be the best in reliability from the volkswagon stable probably due to being a budget offering with simplified electrics etc. Some of the Volkswagon cars are just too complicated for their own good and electrical problems are problems that are hard to get rid off sometimes. No question Skoda are excellent cars though its just some look like they have been near battered to death with the ugly stick.
Vauxhalls look better yeah maybe on every chav council estate. Most vile bland looking cars on the market..Would rather have the soda or Ford over a cheap tacky vauxhalls any day.
Vauxhall cars are no more Chav-y than Skoda. A quick look on google maps street view of rough areas shows no more Vauxhalls than anything else. In fact when I checked there were more Fords, Renaults and other brands and not a Vauxhall in site. Vauxhall Astra is popular I think because they are made in the UK and their most popular model is the Corsa which is very popular with women. Larger Vauxhalls are popular rep mobiles. It's likely Chav's would choose performance models they can get cheap s/hand likely from any brand. At least we are both agreed Ford are decent.
Yes those chavs sure are stupid buying luxury and high performance models for far less than a base spec new car on a crappy finance arrangement like the smart people. What imbeciles...

This 'Chav' thing probably needs to be put to rest. I'm certainly not elitist myself. I was merely pointing out people that seem to be labelled with 'Chav' tend to buy a wide variety of cars. There are many reasons to buy new and secondhand with finances often weighting it a certain way. I've certainly bought many secondhand cars in my time. Most have been brilliant bargains but one or two have been problematic.

Toledo with the same engine will be cheaper.
It's a pretty close run thing. The Toledo 1.2 SE is £16350 list. That has a roughly equivalent spec to this version of the Rapid but does have the 105bhp version of the 1.2TSI engine. Seat are doing a £2500 discount at the mo, so you'll be paying £850 more for the extra 19bhp which you may or may not think is worthwhile.http://www.seat.co.uk/content/uk/brand/en/models/special-offers/new-cars/NewToledo-8-9.html#?aeparam=toledo

The Seat Toledo SE 1.2 tsi 105bhp is £12,361 from drive the deal, cracking price
AKG86
Looks nice, but will be seriously under powered...

It wont win any traffic light grand prix, but the TSi have 50% more torque than the 1.2 MPi, so it shouldn't be as bad as you think.
Looks nice, but will be seriously under powered...
Both the Seat and Skoda are made in the same factory.

As I posted previously Rapid = Jetta Knight

Jetta Knight is a 4dr Polo.

The Rapid has always been a wierd car to me... Never really knew where it fitted in.

- UP = Citigo
- Polo = Fabia
- Golf = Octavia
- Passat = Superb
Got to say though that the new Rapid spaceback looks a great car (although interior looks a lot to be desired). If this is included in their 0% PCP offer and the free servicing package, its a top deal. :)

I might be wrong but

Jetta = Rapid???

My wife bought this in the same offer at the same price last September and it's a great family car for under 10k. The finance also came with 3 years servicing so 3 years stress free motoring for a relatively small outlay was a great deal. The car itself handles very well, is well built and spacious yet doesn't feel like a huge estate so as long as you don't have a fragile ego which needs to be seen in a more 'premium' badge (like anyone gives a..) then I'd definitely recommend it.
The new Quashqai has a 1.2l and that is a huge chunk of a car.
I know some one who has driven it pre production and said it was fantastic.

price wise hot, Skoda cars are reliable (most of them).
Don't really care about look of it, etc....
What really worries me is 1.2 engine?!
Did physics law changed recently for cars or what? Estate 1.5ton GVWR and 1.2l petrol engine?! No wonder this cars are in the garages every third month :D
As for somebody who wants to buy this: on test drive take all your family and luggage + plus couple bags of cement and then start your test drive :D I bet you not gonna be happy :| I am not even talking about motorway driving or towing....
Estate should be atleast 1.6l......

They fit a 1.2 engine to the much larger Skoda Octavia.

It gets very good reviews.

Indeed.. the 1.2 tsi is quite a gutsy little engine I've driven this 86ps version and the 105ps 1.2 tsi while my vRS was in for a service and they were both quite nippy.

Ah crap, I voted hot thinking it was a diesel.

Its not. And its not hot.

Too expensive for such a small car (still) with an image problem. There's no pride in driving a skoda and with these German 'im driving around in a coffin' designs, there no hope of its fuddy duddy doily image changing. Its now seen as a reliable BORING dead in the pants waiting to die drivers car. Like volvos in the 90s and Saab's in the 00s.

I seriously hope that you are not a Doctor of medicine, with that kind of attitude.:(

Not being a snob but it's a Skoda and that name will never be trendy!!

My fabia is quality, 100% sure if it had a audi or VW badge everyone would buy one.
but again silly people like you probably wont have ever driven one.

It begs the question why wont VW put their badge on it? They put their badge on the Up model which is made in Slovakia.

Branding isn't it, skoda is a brand on the up though

Quite simply because it doesn't fit into the VW range - there's no place for a car of that size.

havent heard anyone say that in a loooooooooooooong time

There will be a really simple reason for that, you might want to take a look in the mirror, or at what you drive for the answer!

Not really a very clever reply, was it? Quite simply, you're way behind the times if you think Skoda's off-trend. The Yeti's constantly rated as one of the best SUVs on the market, and the Skoda brand's going from strength to strength.

The smart money's on Skodas these days. It's only the people desperately trying to keep up appearances who feel threatened by having one.

''What Octavia? The Mk1 has an A3 dash, the Mk2 facelift model has a slightly redesigned Mk6 Golf dash with identical soft feel plastic. The Mk3 is a further improvement on this...''

You obviously know nothing about Skoda's as the Octavia mk1 did not have an A3 dash - the Seat Leon mk1 and Seat Toledo mk2 had the same dash as an A3, the Octavia mk1 had its own dash, and how can the Octavia mk2 have had a redesigned Gold mk6 dash, when the Octavia mk2 came out about 4 years before the mk6 Golf?

if you read my reply you would see I put mk2 facelift. I know, I have one.

By that reckoning a Ford Ka is a miniaturised GT40 :D

This car is the same as the one I purchased 2 years ago. Seems to be not very efficient 45 mpg and max 5o mpg. Also been in for repair 2 times and I have only done 6,500 miles of careful driving. First defect was a jammed electric window and second was a gear change problem - would not engage first gear. overall not one I would recommend. Now waiting for problem when warranty expires.

6,500 miles in two years - I do more than that on my bicycle!
It would probably be more efficient if the engine got up to the design temperature for a reasonable period of time.
Is it really worth the expense of car ownership to travel 3,000 miles per year?

It is if you live in an area like mine where there are very few buses and no trains at all. What's the alternative?

I do live in the same sort of area; no trains since Beechings era and buses at inconvenient times. I cycle an average of 100 miles per week, walk a lot and drive around 25 k per year. It depends where I am going and how much time I have whether I walk, cycle or drive.

I will never buy a diesel. Work of the devil bought by idiots who have no sense of money.
Outrunner
The only emission test applicable to Diesel engines is the measuring of exhaust smoke density. The test involves accelerating the engine several times to its maximum unloaded speed. Note: it is of the utmost importance that the engine timing belt is in good condition before the test is carried out.
The limits for Diesel engine exhaust smoke, introduced in September 1995 are:
Vehicles first used before 1st August 1979: Exempt from metered smoke testing, but must not emit "dense blue or clearly visible black smoke for a period of more than 5 seconds at idle" or "dense blue or clearly visible black smoke during acceleration which would obscure the view of other road users".
Non-turbocharged vehicles first used after 1st August 1979: 2.5m-1
Turbocharged vehicles first used after 1st August 1979: 3.0m-1

Excessive smoke can be caused by a dirty air cleaner element. Otherwise, professional advice may be needed to find the cause.

Sales are 'grim' because the new models are about to be released. That normally brings a slump in sales, which they try to address by pushing offers like this (which map pretty well to a good deal you could get through skilled haggling anyway).

Not quite 'expired' yet, but some of these cars are no longer possible to order from the factory - I know reasonably certainly that the Octavia estate is no longer possible to order, as I got mine through the system just before orders closed. There may be some new units still lurking around in the system, but they're few and far between and can disappear quickly.
0049ner
They might be good cars if you hang on to them for a few years but sales must be grim at Skoda if they have to make offers of 0% finance and 20% discount. Hate to think what the residuals will be like in 3 years. I would personally pay more for a VW with more street cred and better price come p/ex or sale
Suzuki have no vat deals at the moment too. You can go up to a ford dealer and expect to get 20% off anyway. Don't think sales are grim with the new citigo and rapide.

I've looked at a Octavia VRS and price comes out less the VAT and then a extra £500 towards the deposit from Skoda.

So it is a far bit off, but has anyone else managed to get anything else off?

has anybody on here bought an octavia on this offer?...did you go with the finance deal and then pay it off like someone on here suggested could be done? I'm thinking of going for the elegance but was quoted 14300 and change with metallic paint added.

I've asked about this and it can be done

If there was a Superb auto 4WD estate around this price and offer (do they even do such a model?) I'd be throwing my cash at 'em.

£22k, for a used Skoda, you...behaa....blegh....speechless!

£10k for a used Merc R320 is sounding very tempting if I can remove a middle seat for rear access.

10k, where!!?

Five years in an Octavia?

Your mind.

I have an Octavia vRS. I wouldn't call it ugly. Nice car, I would certainly buy another.

I've been in all sorts of cars including a Porsche 911, a Porsche 924 and I've owned a Fiat Punto, a Fiat Bravo, a Renault Laguna, A Nissan Primera and a Hyundai i10 and now I'm about to own a Skoda Fabia SE which I've had a ride in and was so impressed I thought I'd buy one, especially with the offer of minus 25% being on at the moment.

d now a Skoda Fabia VRS. It's the best car I've owned, the cheapest to run, the cheapest to ensure and has the best performance of the lot. I didn't buy brand new, but over a year later the car is going for what I paid for it..

Mk1 I presume? I had an SE remapped to 180bhp. Used to love reddening boy racers cheeks:D

oOoO.

:D
Why expire this?
Still available at this price.
Sports car is always the best car. In recent news we can heard that Robert Kubica reportedly tested a Skoda Fabia rally car in Genoa earlier this week. I think, this is the best car for racing.

Heres the two side by side.

I know for a fact if you asked 100 people which one they would rather own on looks alone, the majority would pick the Polo.

You may be right until they are asked to pay for it!

We already said that price aside which one LOOKS better...not which one is better value.

No VAT is a good deal. Most 2 year used cars with 30k mileage on it look expensive after considering depreciation compared to brand new car with VAT off price

Hmm I'm looking for something 8-11k. Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI is a great option but is there any chance of getting one without a wait?

Car threads: UGG threads for blokes (juvenile ones that is)!
R32? Too heavy, too slow, too ordinary to look at. Sound nice though.
Then what car did you think I was talking about that's related to Skoda called Mk V GTI ?

Love the r32 they sound awesome.

Revo is next on my list of mods
Creatzy yeah its got good reviews but why didnt you just say golf instead of GTI is it something that your proud, Ive had the MK5 GTI (good car) but it is nothing compaired to my MK5 R32 with a little list of mods.
Yes, a Skoda is cheaper, fuglier VW, but VWs are way overpriced (as I know from experience) so you are left with something that is just fugly. Still, Audis are just overpriced VWs so you could do worse.

The sad thing is that people still believe that old advert from the 80s: "if only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkwagen" and pay a premium for them. Look at the reliability tables - there are many more reliable cars that are better value.

tbh replacing the flywheel a 2nd time you would've thought something was causing flywheel to fail and not actually flywheel itself. Think your friend needs to go to a more competent mechanic.

For you personally though, you need to stop making sweeping statements just because one 3rd persons views of a bad experience and actually read between the lines. Your probably not going to accept life lessons from a random person online, but we all have to try to make a world a better place.

So back on topic, alot of car for the money however 1.6 unrefined petrol engine is not for everybody. Plus its only 10% more off than the 'sales offer' atm.

When are people ever going to learn DON'T buy a Skoda as they are rubbish. My friend has a Skoda and the flywheel has had to be replaced 5 times in one year alone. So AVOID as even at this price they are not worth it.

Do you honestly think anyone is going to beleive that? You probably can't even tell me what a flywheel is without having to google is. Skoda are one of the only cars to get the top reliability that aren't Japanese so you should just pipe down before you embarrass yourself even more. Owned an Octavia for 3 years now and best car value for money wise and reliability. But the flywheel has had to be changed 6 thousand times.......

To be honest I dont really give a F$£K what you beleive.

who in their right mind would buy the new MG?

Agreed, 80% Chinese made, and with terrible reviews. Think they only stick the MG badges on in the UK...who said City Rover? ;)

How come it says 105ps in the title and 102ps in the description??

Very good question, Wildknight, which hasn't received a constructive reply yet. Looking at the "Go to deal" link, the only spec for this car seems to be in the 25% off deal, the engine doesn't feature in the RRP listing on the site. Is this a discontinued, or about to be so, model with a pretty uninspiring engine? At the very least OP, may I suggest that the title should change to 102PS to match the quoted spec?
Having said all that you can get a great car, albeit with a very basic engine, for a bargain price. Just don't think you are getting more than you are, though.

Probably the difference between BHP and PS

Cold as ice. This model is permanently on offer.
Before april it was 'VAT FREE ON CERTAIN MODELS' i.e. this one

Also the 'non-standard' equipment is a big list of things I would consider a car to not be a car without.

This model has never been part of the 'VAT FREE ON CERTAIN MODELS'

It is a special edition to get rid of the aged 1.6MPI's and is '25%' off. VAT is 20%.

The other offer for 'VAT free' has finished and is now they pay 15% of the VAT.

Is it seriously as simple as that? If I bought an A3 all I'd be getting over the Octavia is a sleek exterior and a badge?

Yes, but some people actually want their car to look nice.
Ordered two thx!
A bit more info on this deal. Basically there is a waiting list of 6-9 months for a diesel. Branches need something to sell. They have a lot of these engines about so they have done a big run of these cars of various different models. Branches bid for cars and were allocated so many depending on how many they bid for. The deal is for an Octavia SE equivalent with cd autochanger and some other extras. The cars are either already built and in showrooms, or are on their way here or are nearing completion in the factory. You basically find out what your branch has coming in, in terms of colours and extras and take your pick - if nothing grabs you, try the next nearest dealer. Estates are 1 grand dealer as a base price. Some extras you pay for, some are chucked in for free - for example, you can get some with sports wheels/suspension for free but would pay for metallic paint. You can't really specify what you want as they are already produced, you just have to choose the best fit from what's available - dealer may do a swap with another to get you a close match to your spec. We had a test drive and the engine is very nice although maybe not as economical as the newer ones. We only do 4-5k per annum and will only keep it for 3 years so don't really care about increased tax or higher running costs compared to the discount on new price.

We will get our Black metallic estate with sports wheels and sat nav computer, aircon, cd changer, years road tax, 3 year warranty etc next week for princely sum of £13k - the boot is huge and there is loads of head/leg room in the rear. Ideal for a growing family where the kids are about to hit their teens and are expected to reach 6' 4/5!

Proud to drive a Skoda - shows that we are not idiots - there is a reason why they are continually voted top manufacturer.

Really good price but cant help but think that the price drop is going to be due to the cost of Petrol and that they are just not shifting any of these models. Nice car too. Have some heat, just a shame no offers on a diesel.

It's possible that's the reason, however a diesel only makes sense if you do the miles. I do 10K max a year and I have no need for a diesel, with its higher fuel cost,

Eh, not when you factor in mpg. A diesel would blow this 1.6 petrol away for fuel economy, even doing 10k miles a year.

Haven't experience of this car but when you compare the Facelift Tourans in various form the petrol is not so far off the diesels, that official figures have the gap a bit bigger that it is in reallity.

The older 1.9TDI engine was far more economical that the newer 2.0 model.
toonarmani
why would anyone want a 1.6 litre engine in a family saloon?!

oO

The newer 1.6 petrol engines are not like the old ones.

Take the Touran 1.6 petrol, it's performance figures are better than the 1.9D in both 90 and 105 bhp forms.

The economy is not that bad on them either, you would have to be racking up the miles to make it work for you, given some pumps have a 7p premium for diesel, add to that the buying premium and more expensive servicing, the gap is not what many think.
