No fair usage policy like virgin media though, so if your download large amounts works out better

You're right about the speed, but I wouldn't say the service from Sky is 'crap' as you put it. If you truly want to experience mind-numbingly bad service try PlusNet; if you haven't been driven mad by the end of six months, you should get a prize.

I didn't find sky's broadband to be crap at all. Infact, i found it kinda faultless.

Sky on the other hand, I couldn't stand. I'm now courting O2 broadband. Best service in the UK, but possibly the worst wifi router I've ever used. Sky's antenna-less one beat it in most ways.

I got the fastest speed my line could hand (around 15megabits.) all the time from sky. Wirelessly. Fastest you'll get with the o2 router on wifi is about half that lol (cable everything up, or replace the router and all is fine though ;) )

But the virgin media is so fast it doesnt matter as you will be hitting 19 or 20 meg all the time, with sky most people i hear get nearer 2mb than 20mb.

so there fore 10 times faster, then when and even if it is traffic controlled you will still get faster speeds than most competitors

its does matter as after 750mb they cut your speed by 75%, yes 75% ! My 10mb connection goes down to about a 1mb connection after 45 minutes - 1 hour, which is ridiculously slow and painful. Not only that since they introduced 50mb ping is 50+ and jitter rests around the 20 region. Quite poor for a 10mb connection. Whereas my sky 2mb connection has 20ish ping and 4-5 jitter. Sky wins imo

I get over 10 and someone else that i know who uses a different exchange gets over 10.

The best thing about it is its truly unlimited.

Ping is how quick you can send data to a server and back, mainly used in real-time applications i.e online games. Jitter is how much your connection varies. So say 4 ping it would vary between 18 and 22.

IMO best in the UK is Be Broadband. I have their unlimited package and speedtest.net shows 20-21mbps for me. Same router as O2 give out so I replaced it with a Netgear for better wireless strength. No traffic shaping either.

You mention your Sky service is truly unlimited but that is wrong! No isp has truly unlimited bb.

All have a fair usage policy albeit some more leanient than others.

I have to say that I currently have both Sky Broadand (20Mb) & Virgins (50Mb) services. Both work extremely well in my area. Can max out Virgin at any time of the day. Sky gets between 13Mb & 16Mb. Only get minor niggles with either service.
Before anyone asks - we are heavy users including streaming.

Was free for 6 months and then £10 a month for the remaining 6 months =£60

This deal is 12 months @ £5 which, you guessed it, =£60

The OP says it's £5 for 6 months = £30
Next 6 months = £60, Total £90

Been using Plusnet for over a year and haven't had a single problem. Any questions I've asked have been dealt with very quickly and thoroughly. There isn't a single isp that someone somewhere hasn't had problems with but Plusnet often top the customer satisfaction tables.

Sky made a big deal on Watchdog that they have a truly unlimited service, in fact at the time of the show they were the ONLY company that offered a truly unlimited deal.
#26
what happens when you cancel sky - do you have to lose the broadband too?
#27
lol i have this after upgrading when they were offering free for 6 months, but as I'm so far from exchange (what I've been told) i get about 2mb speed. won't be paying for this when the trial is over!
awful really

I had a BT engineer out a few weeks ago who told me that many ISP's will split the lines at the exchange so basically they can get multiple users on the same line/hardware, this halves (or more) the connection speed of each user but it means the ISP has more lines available for more users and is very good value (for the ISP). Be Broadband don't do this and I guess is probably why your speed is much improved.

we need that superfast £1 internet tax to catch up with everywhere else and get faster internet cheaper. They were saying on the news that some people don't want internet and the money would be better spent getting it for them and convincing them they need it. Why would you spend money giving someone something they don't want in the first place ! I mean south korea has 100mbs connection in most homes, and they pay pennies for it
#33
Been with Sky for years and never had any issues. The usage is unlimited, no fair use policy at all

Well personally I've yet to speak to a non asian call centre rep who could actually speak a word of english during my many many many many many many many many many phone calls enquiring as to why A) My broadband speed is so ***** and B) Why the **** does it disconnect 10 timesa month (it may not sound like a lot, but considering the disconnects can last for days, it adds up).

I do get between 6-7mb downstream and 0.8up on the router (which is also a pile of crap, and you cant use your own router directly either unless you hack it) but it tends to be a lot lower for any devices using the internet.

In a nutshell, go with a provider like O2. The cheap calls and sky player arent worth the cost.

I got a very stable 20Mb download consistently from Sky on their LLU package. Unfortunately now that I've moved I can't use the Sky package but I was very impressed with the connection stability and speed and the contention ratio was pretty good.

im with sky. my deal is for 10mb download speed. my line can support 8mb speeds. but they never give me more then 3. will be swapping soon so any ideas of good comapnies that match their predicted speeds anyone?
#37
The speed you get with any non-cable provider is dependant upon how far you are from the local exchange. If you're getting 16Mbps or more I'd guess you could hit the exchange with a cricket ball from one or more windows of the house.... ;-)

BE broadband but it comes at a cost and Virgin, but its all deoendant on where you live, and how much you want to spend.

I get 14mbps from my Sky ADSL 2+ connection. Been very stable too - I have no complaints.
