I called up sky telling them i wanted to cancel as I wasnt under a contract with them any longer and was thinking of getting freesatHD for the world cup. They offered me a skyHD box for £29.99 with no subscription and free installation. May be worth a try for other people no longer under contract with them. First post, be kind!!

You're very lucky to get it with no subscription.

I was told not even the Sky staff can get that!

I did the same when I couldn’t get any kind of deal, when the half price HD offer was on,
Contract finished on 6th April card still worked until 25th April phone call on the 30th April half price for 12 months. I saved almost £240 on a year, will be cancelling in 12 months.
Couldn't get a deal for a HD as well but not really that concerned, I don't think it makes that much difference on a 37" lcd anyway.

I left sky when they wouldn't give me free broadband as I wasn't on LLU exchange.

also price seemed to be going up and up...

Never looked back got Humax 9200 freeview recorder( and freesat box when they came out)... over 4 years ago saved a fortune.as I was on full package when i left

Haven't missed footie cos I go down the pub or watch online now

just rang up 2 cancel and they gave me my current package half price for 6months £38 down to £18.50 bit of a bargin

I think you need to check the charges. You may have perhaps misunderstood the deal offered, they WERE offering a free box with £10 per month and self install but you had to pay £30 p&p for delivery, all seems a bit coincidental to me.

Added to this theres the fact that I only called on Sunday afternoon and said I wanted to cancel as my box was failing every day.. I didn't ask for any extras, I actually wanted to cancel!! She said she could do a box for free with £10 pcm fee, I said I wasn't interested and still wanted to cancel and she explained that they look on YOUR account and thats what gives you the deal, there was nothing more she could do (this was after 15mins of me whinging about how badly sky treats current customers so if she could have done a deal I think she would have done, just to get rid of me!!

It may be that you are a full subs customer and they value you more, but all in I thought that £120 for a brand new box and free fitting was OK (our old box REALLY is knackered!!) so I accepted.

Its a risky strategy unless you have a good backup in place. They are on to this scam (engineer told us about it 5yrs ago!) and they speradically allow you to go through the cancellation process to discourage this (though lets face it, its easy enough to rejoin IF they do let you go )
#11
I was abit scepticall as well when he offered me it for 30, made sure there were no other charges, engineer is comin next week to fit it in.
#12
The problem is... I wont leave as love the HD movies too much.

But hate that everyone gets letters with half price this and that, and when I phone they give me nothing.

I am not brave enough to go through to cancelations and they would again probably say .... BYE.

Only for me to phone up and re-start it.... :whistling:
#13
i got free box, and no install cost as they sent the box out for me to do it myself and then just the £10pm HD charge which i can then cancel after 31 days....so basically double the memory, brand new box for £10! and this was all on top of only paying 1/3rd for the upgrade to movies and sports!

I'm a happy customer!

Depends what your account says as to what they offer you......and you get better deals if they phone you and not the other way round which is a bit crap!

must have been lucky the last two years ive pulled off the full tv hd package for £28.75

I finally rang Sky to cancel movies and sports, which I've had for over ten years and all I got was bye and thanks for calling.
#16
It is so luck of the draw. I have all the general entertainment, phone calls and unlimited broadband with them so i get the odd sport and movie offer through the door. i had one a few days ago for free sport for 3 months but its not worth it . With the world cup on the beeb and no premier league for a few months their sport subscriber base must drop through the floor this time of year .

forgot to say i spoke to a nice lady at sky last week because my broadband speed had dropped through the floor again. This always seem to happen when i upgrade my broadband package (600k top speed this time LOL) . She said there was a nice surprise coming for sky subscribers in sep/oct time . I have no idea what this is and i admit i am an idiot for not having pushed the point to find out . Any ideas anyone ?.

That martin Lewis site always say the best time to phone Sky up is on a Thursday, as that is the day they can offer deals to customers.

I left Sky over 12 months ago and i don't miss it, i have the Humax Freesat box and its great. Fair enough i don't get the shows i once watched but to be honest you can watch everything you want online if you look hard enough.

I keep getting letters from Sky giving me deals but im not interested. Maybe when they give away the Sky HD box and waive the £10pm subscription fee more people will come back.

Ive never had the movies even when i had Sky so all the hype over the HD on these channels mean nothing to me, so it would have to be a free box and free subscription to get me interested.

There are lots of deals that existing customers have got from sky over the years... I have had a number of discounts and upgrades, without paying the premium... However just because some people have tried and failed on these forums, you get accused of lying...

If you are thinking of calling sky about a deal, you should do so.... EVERY customer is different...

I did the same thing last week. Apparently they ring back at a later date and offer you a deal, however no such luck for me
#21
I rang up also asking to cancel and was asked why? I mentioned never being in to watch tv and was sick of hearing about people being picked at random and given free hd and was told they could definitely do something for me as I had a bit of loyalty built up on my account.

I was offered a 'A' Grade HD box with free install and no hd subs for 29 quid. bargain I thought.

Anybody know if the installers carry quad Lnb's and also how good the A grade boxes are?
#22
about as good as new bad
#23
Ive had sky for about 5 years and had 4 years at half price, just keep phoning up to cancel, must admite i had to leave twice to get the half price deal, and when i got sky bb they wouldnt offer anything, im with o2 bb now and half price sky tv package so keep trying guys and gals
#24
Yes engineers always carry quad LNBS

I got the leaflet in the post offering me a 1TB box for £150. Reckon it's worth it?
#27
Cheers Packard, BA I heard its not hard to put your own 1tb in the normal hd box
#28
Hard to believe this deal tbh.

Why would Sky give you a box worth £150+ for £30, with free installation, and NO subscription? This is Sky, there's no way they'll usually do something like that unless you're tied in to their subscription package. What do they get out of it? They lose a significant amount of money on giving you a box for cheap, they lose money on the call out for the engineer, you don't subscribe at all so they make nothing back, so there's practically nothing in it for them.

The only thing I can think of is that in their eyes, there's the tiny chance that you end up subscribing again by still having a Sky Box, and by still having that Sky Box it means you don't end up with a competitor in the long term (i.e. freesat or Virgin), which if you did means you're unlikely to go back to Sky as you've already invested in alternative hardware. So maybe this deal is a one-off World Cup thing where they hope to suck you into a subscription eventually by making sure you stick to Sky's equipment (e.g. when the Premiership season kicks off again).

Apologies if it's real, but this wouldn't be the first time on HDUK that a non-existent (or mistaken) deal is posted. Is there any evidence of this deal actually being offered/going through? Are you sure there aren't any other fees or subscriptions involved?

If it is real, then it's a pretty decent deal given that a decent freesat HD box will cost at least £100. Although without a subscription, you'll have no additional Sky+ features (such as recording, rewind/pause, etc), so it won't matter how big the hard drive is because you'll not be able to use it.

I agree, I have a £100+ per month package (BB, Telephone, full TV with HD and multiroom) and I wanted to try and get an extra HD box for the multiroom, even with Moview/sports and BB cancellation threatened (which I could do as I was out of time period) they only offered box for £99 plus the self install free installation but still with the £10 extra sub which the confirmed was totally non-negotiable so as per above poster I am not suggesting you are telling porkies but I suspect you may have misunderstood the offer to have a no subs HD deal unless you are not actually being given any HD channels but again I still think this is highly unlikely.

On another note why do these posts not get cancelled as it is not a deal anyway, it is a by customer consideration by Sky and has no 'general population' consideration so the majority of us would not get the same deal if we rang up anyway!
#30
I am still payin £23 for my sky package, but I am not paying the HD subscription,so in the long term they are still making money.
#31
Why is it on these 'phone up sky and see if you can get a deal' threads, no-one ever puts the phone number to do so...it would things a lot easier!

It is possible to get the new box without HD as I was told by the sky advisor that they dont make any other box other than HD now (I assume so that everyone has the ability to switch to HD at the flick of a switch rather than having to send out a new HD box?!?!).

If the guy got the deal he thinks he has good luck to him, its a cracking deal I just don't see how sky would do it, I have never seen anyone get such a deal so he must have sweet talked the sky agent?!?!?

I did the same last month after I bought a 50" inch 1080p TV thanks to HUKD... I phoned to say I would cancel as Virgin were offering a better deal, can't even get cable in my area... lol, only Sky, but they still offered me Sky HD upgrade with no install charge, no charge for box and 9 months free sub.... so basically same as your deal as I will still have to pay £10pcm for the last 3 months before I can cancel... she then called me back to say she couldn't actually put this offer through as the system doesn't allow free HD sub, so she agreed with a manager to give me £90 credit on my next bill.

all in all got HD box fitted and only pay £30 for the 1st year of HD, im pleased. Just keep forgetting to ring them to cancel sky sports as there is no more prem, they usually tell me to keep it through summer for between £1.00-£5.00

What I do is not cancel the whole subscription, but just cancel the sports and movies packages in April and drop down to the basic package (although I do have multiroom and HD subscription at £10 ea pm)

Then usually around October I get a call or a letter offering a deal like 3 months free or 3-6 months half price for sports and movies (the deal varies but basically you get it cheap for a while). I can do without Sports for the 5-6 months that only really covers the summer and a bit, as I don't like cricket! Also, by the time I get movies again, I get a whole bunch that I haven't seen now available to watch.

no they wont , never called me back when i left ... ended up using the gf details

I spoke to them yesterday and they wouldn't budge anywhere on HD. I have everything with them. The only thing they could offer me was free installation..if I did it myself - whit woo! Wish I had cable in my area, my mates pay a fraction of what I do......
#38
The Sky cancellation department are given targets to meet, simple as that unfortunately. Some days they are told not to budge, and just let customers go no matter how much they whine and complain. Other days they are allowed to give better deals at the agent's discretion.

So in other words, your experience may vary, and don't go in expecting anything out of it.

Totally agree, i've had calls when they won't budge at all and theres been times when family have been offered full package for 1/2 price for a full year, all depends on targets at the time... If they don't budge I just back out of the call and say I will call back after I have thought about and hopefully a few days later get a lovely old lady who doesn't want to lose any customerd :-D

I can beat that :p I received a mailer a year or so ago saying that I could have sky+ and movies for 1/2 price for 6months...... if I was a new customer!!!!! I called to basically get the same deal, explained to the agent that I had received the mailer and that it was unfair:

1. to send them out to CURRENT customers who could not get the deal
2. I was being penalised for being a customer

She would not budge (remember, I only wanted movies), I said I was going to cancel and she said "fine, I'll put you through to cancellations"

Yippee, I thought as EVERYONE said this was the usual ploy and that I would be offered the world to stay...... NOPE!!! Next agent asked if I was sure I wanted to cancel to which I said yes, so she did, not even a word to get me to reconsider!!! Eventually after having my ear chewed off by the wife, I called back and "changed my mind" just before the cut off date!!

However, thats not the best bit..... after about 6mths THEY called ME to offer movies half price for 6mths!!!!! I was livid, told the agent where to stick his movies and not to bother offering me it again....... heat of the moment perhaps but I sure felt better! :p
