Just rang up sky and said that I wanted to view the world cup in HD but didn't want to pay £10 a month subscription. I was told that I could buy a sky HD box for £59 with no subscription. You will be able to pick up all the free HD channels such as BBCHD, ITV HD, 4HD etc with no monthly charge, thus allowing you to watch the world cup in HD!

The engineer is coming on Friday for my installation (unplug my sky+ box and then connect my HD box - not sure why it needs an engineer but I was told that was the only option!) Perfect timing though for the opening game!!!!!!!

Would you have the HD Pack though? which enables the Sky Subscription channels and the recording of HD channels?
#2
Have you had to pay any installation charge?
#3
You can't record wih the Sky box unless you subscribe. Big disadvantage compared to a freesat hd box.
#4
will it record for this?
#5
I've just called them up. I've had a Sky+ box for 2 years.

They said there's no such deal, the cheapest without subscribing to the HD pack is £99 + £60 installation. I'm not suprised, but I never seem to be lucky with these customer retention offers. Are you in a Virgin Digital area, I hear they get better offers*.

*Having said that Sky just bought Virgin Media so it'll pretty much be a monopoly soon anyway and prices won't get better.

No, Sky bought the channels VM own. Living, Virgin, Bravo, Challenge.

They're going to concentrate on being a content delivery company rather than content creation, which is pretty sensible really. I'm not sure whether VM will continue to partner with the BBC for Gold/Dave/Alibi etc, or if they'll sell their share or whatever. Time will tell.

They've only bought the conte rights, Virgin will continue as a cable provider so you could still jump ship/use retentions to get a better deal.

Although I suppose you can probably no longer suggest that their rival has better channels seeing as they are now likely to have the same...

Voted hot. This is what I was looking for but the customercare would not offer anything but 10 pound subscription. How did you manage?

+1  so come on NWS, how did you get this?

There's more than one or two of us who have held out with their CSD to get the "new dish and Sky HD+ box installed" for £29.

Just keep telling them FreeSat or Freeview HD is cheaper and they end up offering you it at this price. It does need a 12 month subscription to the basic though but it does get you a pretty cheap HD+ box and a better satellite signal for a reasonable price which is OK if you're happy to stay with Sky.

Maybe a better deal for me as I am in a cabled area.

No installation fee!

Yes you can record without paying a subscription fee!

I rang up and said that I wanted to watch the world cup in HD and I could join Virgin and not pay an monthly subscription.

ITV HD - If you check out the Sky website you can now get ITV HD.

Any more questions?

My mother in law as an existing customer has been given a free Sky HD box and 12 months free HD subscription.
When i phoned up to try and match this they said there was no such deal even after threatening to cancel.

|f you have any of the channel packages you can record doesn't have to be that you pay the HD subscription

Called up last week to cancel sports and they offered me free hd box, free (self) installation and free hd mix for 6months, but tied in for a year - basically hd for £60 for the year. Even managed to get the same offer for the in laws. Very pleased so far.

I think the key is to go through to the cancellations department, and remember the offers aren't available to everyone. Worth trying your luck though.

When cancelling my parents sky they offered 6months half price (no sports or movies), I mentioned how come you offer resellers, affiliates 12months half price, no answer, so i said cancel, he was very very stubborn, got there in the end though.

I agree. What I am saying is that if you do not pay anything and just use the box for free to view channels, then you CANNOT use the record facility. :whistling:

...but surely, if you're just phoning to cancel the Sports it's just downscaling your sub and they'll do that without putting you through to the cancellation dept. To get through to cancellations won't you have to threaten to cancel the whole shebang??

True but I've learned from experience to always go through to the cancellations dept as their the ones who seem to be able to offer the best deals. Even though I was calling to downgrade I wanted to see what they could offer.

Sorry, forgot to mention, to get through to the cancellations dept just select the appropriate option from the menu when you call up.

Hi I also have a sky HD box, which allows me to view the free view channels + some HD, but I'M not able to record.

saying this, I only have one cable at the moment, but I have a friend which is coming to put me a second cable.

so for now I've tried to record the channel I'm watching, but nothing.

Do you have a fix?

Regards

Would you have the HD Pack though? which enables the Sky Subscription channels and the recording of HD channels?

£ 120/YEAR to enable recording on all skyhd boxes

thats why new order online is better deal, £100ish cashback £100 M&s vouchers, (can take nagging them + weeks to come mind., all upgrades/retentions are a rip off in comparison to that, their new customer marketing budget is where the u the money is not existing customers.
