Bought my first decent suit (Daks Simpson) in Slaters back in 1983.

Back then it was called Ralph Slaters, and it was Ralph himself who sold me the suit upstairs in "Ralph's Room" where the good stuff was.

It was the go to place for a suit in Glasgow back in the 80's.

What people need to take into consideration here is that it's just a basic suit package at £79 to get someone through a interview or a funeral it's probably like people said not a day to day suit.

What people seem to forget is the free alterations on the suits they provide which u have to pay for elsewhere for example: take in jacket £15, shorten trouser £10, narrow trouser £15, shorten or lengthen sleeve £15 I can go on.

They sell suits from £49-£500 so there is a price range for everyone and you won't come out looking like your wearing someone else's suit once you have got it bang on your size.

And that last part really is the be all and end all. You could have a £1,000 suit on, but if it doesn't fit right it will look crap. Be under no illusion. A cheap suit that fits correctly will always look miles better, but I still maintain that if you are happy to look at charity shops or even eBay, you can get some superb suits and simply have them altered. Different brands have different cuts and even though the sizes say the same number, hmmmm. I like Cardin suits, I know the sizes that fit me, can always but one with confidence that the jacket will fit if I choose 42r, and trousers can be altered in or out usually. Not out by too much, but usually a couple of inches to play with. Result a superb tailored and dry cleaned suit for circa £50 all in. I have 14 suits now, and most are Cardin and from eBay or Charity shops. All have been tailored to fit and cleaned. You do NOT need to buy crap. Many were literally like new from charity shops. If it looks rough in any way just forget it and keep looking.

Suit = Fabric - 68% polyester/32% viscose, lining - 50% polyester/50% viscose
Seriously save a little more and buy a pure wool suit when its on sale - it will look 100 times better and last 100 times longer!
well not really ... it depends... plus you would need to dry clean it so it will also be 100 times more expensive
Not really - a decent suit goes a long way. If you want a disposable one then buy this - if you want one that lasts pay a little more. Natural fibers are always better.
You can actually find some immaculate wool suits from premium brands at charity shops, and as long as the jacket fits, trouser alterations are very cheap. Even if you have it dry cleaned you are still looking at a lot less than this.

"trouser alterations are very cheap", so I can get a 30" waist adjusted to a 42" waist then?

Nope, but seeing as I had said "if the jacket fits" and given the standard 6" drop from jacket to trouser, for you to need a 42" trouser you would typically need a 48" jacket. So had the jacket fitted, and assuming you followed the typical measurement ratio above you would never be in that situation. Even buying new, if you don't fit the standard ratio of the 6" drop from jacket to trouser, unless you are buying from a mix and match range (usually dearer), you are still going to have to have something altered.

The Londoners can get a suit from Mr Byrite on Oxford Street.

Edited By: Gallus on Oct 27, 2014 15:08
£70 seems quite a bit even for central London - I used MO Tailor near Oxford circus and they were roughly half that for trousers and jacket (length only though).
mugen6
Yes, free alterations, assuming they'll do both the jacket and trousers, is worth choosing Slaters over Next. Just try on a few a wool blend suits that fit around the shoulders/neck (tailors can't really adjust shoulders) and they should take it in at the upper back/waist. If you are lucky enough to have a body type that allows you to buy off the peg then go for it. I need a 44 chest but I have a 34" waist but suit makers assume that 44 chest means you're likely to be a fat git with a 40" beer gut so the jackets are always massive around the waist and make you look like a cereal box.
They alter both for free.

And you're getting ripped off for your tailoring! (unless you live in London)
I forgot to mention, having trousers and jacket adjusted is about £70. (roughly £45 for the jacket, £25 for the trousers). You may find it cheaper depending on your area or who you know.

Slaters are excellent. I'm heavily tattooed including my hands and neck but still like dressing smartly and the service I received at Slaters in Swansea was outstanding. The staff gave me one of the best shopping experiences I've ever had. I'd recommend this store to anyone.
Yeah I find them a pretty decent outfitter as well as their personal tailoring service for suits it can be a one stop shop. I've bought shoes and a few shirts
The only Slaters store I've ever been in is the Norwich brand, and if that store is a fair representation of their nationwide standard then I have only good things to say about them. Very good customer service, far better than what I have experienced in Moss Bros.

Used to rate Regatta until earlier this year when I bought a coat from them. very poor quality stitching, pockets hanging off within a couple of months.
Nope, not going to the proper page. Use the link and then choose Karrimor from the list on the left of the page
The Karri or look pretty good: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_4?url=search-alias%3Dshoes&field-keywords=merrell&sprefix=merr%2Caps%2C419 but the Merrels are expensive. Heat for the OPs.

Same goes for charity shops. You would honestly be amazed at what you can find. I bought two brand new Cardin suits, in the right size, and only needed the trousers taking up. Paid £27.50 for the two suits, and £8 per pair of trousers to have the legs shortened. Absolutely immaculate, and circa 10% of shop price.

Yes but you are wearing a dead man's suit!

Well it's not like he needs it any more then........ :-)

Seriously though, the number of people that buy, wear once and then get rid is insane. People also buy stuff thinking it will fit, don't wear it for ages, then find it doesn't and so stays in a wardrobe until they finally decide they will get rid of it.

A cheap suit will always look cheap, no matter what you do, but even second hand (stick to 100% wool, or at least a very very high % wool), as long as you buy the closest size in every way, and then tailor the last bit, it will look absolutely great.

Some superb 100% wool suits can be found on ebay for very very cheap prices indeed. Maybe £10 to have it dry cleaned if indeed it hadn't already been so (many have), and as long as you get Jacket in the right size, it's only circa £8 to have trousers taken in or taken up at many tailors. The look and feel will be so much better than buying a very cheap suit. The difference is in buying a suit cheap, as opposed to buying a cheap suit.

Got my suit today. Its really good quality for the price (bearing in mind I went for the £59 Ventura, not the one posted here). I got a 42L slim fit suit which fits me better than dozens of slim fit ones that I have tried on in the high street. Im 6 foot 3 and pretty skinny so getting one to fit my shoulders then normally looks like a bag everywhere else (wide all the way down). But this one is wide for my shoulders but really nice and slimline. Really happy! Trousers are a nice length, good cut, deep pockets.

Bought two shirts too. Thinner than some but fit well and much better than any Primark crap.

Did they send you a random trouser size? What trouser size did they send?

They send a trouser 6 inches less than the jacket size... so my 42L gave me a 36 inch trouser which fits fine
I'm a 36"/30" so they're slim fits should be fine right?

Square toed shoes ain't stylish.

Thanks for that Gok
Tried these on instore last week, as I had a funeral. Needless to say I went with a pair of £25 Clarks instead.

Very shiny, look alright at first glance, upon actual inspection they are very obviously plastic, they say 'Made in China' inside, are very tight and uncomfortable.

They are cheap for a reason, they are awful. Veeeeeery cold on this one from me.

Edited By: iNfy on Dec 09, 2012 11:15
AVOID!

These shoes are terrible, I got them as part of the suit deal last year and the heels were already wearing away after a week, they're uncomfortable (had to put innersoles in them), the plastic coating started peeling off too. I didn't really mind as they were part of the suit deal so they were more of a bonus but I wouldn't buy these separately. You're better off going for a pair of leather shoes from a supermarket, you won't be paying much more and there's a chance they might actually last.

Also when my boyfriend bought the suit package recently he managed to rip straight through the eyelet of the shoe tightening the laces trying the shoes on in the shop.

FYI, they've also been £12 for at least a year, probably longer.
