Popped into the Gateshead Asda to get a PS3 today. The console was £235 without game or £245 with. Picked up Just Cause 2 which showed as being £27 on the SEL but when it went through the till it deducted the usual £29.71 for the bundle deal meaning I got a PS3 and a game for 3 quid less than the console on it's own. Not sure if this is nation wide though, may be store specific.

Don't buy a PS3 yet.

there is a new CECH-2100A model literally on the horizon (its out in Japan and due any moment in the UK it seems).

This has been upgraded to 40nm RSX and will run much cooler than the current slim which has 65nm RSX, it also uses a 1/3rd less electricity than the current slim.

The PS3 slim (officially called the PS3 CECH-2000) is the redesigned model of the console, and currently the only model in production. It features an upgradeable 120GB or 250GB hard drive and is 33% smaller, 36% lighter, and consumes 34% less power than previous models.[21][90][91] The cooling system has been redesigned and Cell processor has moved to a 45nm manufacturing process.[92] It sold in excess of a million units in its first 3 weeks on sale.[93]

from wiki

Are you confusing yourself between the phat and the slim? The phat was 65nm, the slim is 45nm - so this will be 5nm better - which won't save a 1/3 of electric.

Hot deal, been looking for a good deal from ASDA or Tesco although I don't really need another ps3, so I would have to sell my 80gb first......

Nope its a revised version of the slim that is cooler and uses less power:

Think he might be talking about a reduction in the RSX processor.

The new model these guys are talking about are the new slims with the shrink on the Nvidia RSX gpu & not the Cell cpu as you pointed out. It has been estimated that the new 40nm gpu is 15% more power efficient over the current Slims.

I believe the RSX is the graphics chip and not the cell processor.

Yep, RSX is the GPU, Cell is the CPU.

ive been waiting months for the revised model ps3 that i gave up and bought an xbox 360 instead

The newer PS3 Slim is meant to be much less prone to the YLOD which appears to be a fault created by the RSX graphics processor. Although the slim is much smaller it has the same die size gpu as the older model phat 80GB and later 40GBs. The original PS3 Slim has some known overheating issues and hasn't been that reliable. The last phat PS3 the 80GB model appears to be the most reliable of all PS3s so far but this new Slim has a chance of taking that crown. Sony are saying it will be far less likely to get YLOD because they've moved from 65nm to 40nm.

Basically its definitely worth waiting for the new Slim model. Not only should it be a lot more reliable especially in the long term after years of ownership but it will save you money on electricity too and run a lot quieter.

The cooler running chip allows for a stealthier heat sink and power supply in addition to a smaller cooling unit. Those changes combined with fewer adjoining chips around the shrunken RSX should make the console cheaper to build which is good news to Sony's sagging bottom line.

Cheaper parts needed now probaly the same chance of it YLOD,

Thats highly unlikely and certainly not what is expected of the new slim because the RSX goes down from 65nm to 40nm. It just won't generate anywhere near the same levels of heat as the old slim with regard the RSX. So the contacts between the RSX and motherboard breaking down over time is substantially reduced. Remember the RSX in the original Slim is the same as the later phat ps3s and some of them ylod because of cooling problems of the RSX even in their much larger cases.

I'm not saying its bad to have an original slim I'm saying if your buying now its probably worth waiting a little while because the only advantage the original slim has is its available now. Its potentially the difference between an original 360 and a jasper based model. More reliable, less noisy and cheaper to run with less crashing.

Of course you can never win though in six months time there may be another improved ps3 again even less power hungry and less likely to overheat.

This wont be happening.

Graphics chips have only just dropped to 40nm, there are no plans to go to 32nm any time soon; there are also reports that the fabs will avoid 32nm all together and go straight to 28nm.

In terms of the Cell CPU this again will not be dropping to 32nm any time soon too for the same reasons above.

If people remember the drop from 90nm to 65nm Cell with the PS3 occurred in Christmas 2007 with the 40GB, the drop to 45nm occurred in 2009 with the slim; so a 2 year difference.

The drop from 90nm RSX to 65nm RSX occurred in mid 2008 with the 80Gb and last model CECHJ 40GB, and now the 40nm RSX is due mid 2010; so this was again a 2 year difference.

So you are talking Christmas 2011 as the absolute soonest for any drops, but really a more reasonable time frame would be Christmas 2012.

Seems one of the cheapest prices around, particularly if you can get a very recent game with it. Nice glitch getting it cheaper with the game than without! Wonder how many games that price scan glitch would work for?

As for waiting - I guess if you are prepared to wait another 6 months you might start seeing bundles with Playstation Move being released. Sony seem far more focused on tinkering with the hardware than reducing the price, so waiting for the new hardware will likely be at the same price it is now.

Bah dunno what you lot are gibbering on about - got a PS3 slim now and I tell thee its as quiet as a mouse and doesn't cook like my 360 either....

Have you saw a first model Xbox360, and how loud and hot running it is, have you then saw a Jasper and how much of a cool runner it is

Same thing different consoles.

But the new 360 still is no where near as quiet as the PS3, and still prone to RROD despite MS saying it isn't. First hand experience.

But nowhere near as much, the Xenons you are talking something like 90% guarenteed failure rate.

The Jaspers something like 5%.

Now compare this type of change with an already much more reliable PS3, to this new 40nm RSX model.

has anyone else been able to get this deal before i pop down to asda lol

Tried it tonight in Brighton. Didn't work!!

i want another ps3 as the one i have is in the living room. 1 for the bedroom as well means that when im on nights and sleep in the day i can fall asleep watching a bluray film rather than divx, i have far too many bluray films to watch thanks to this site so i need to start making inroads.

i will wait though as im not buying something which is going to be improved upon in 2 months.

it also saves me buying another control pad which at £35 a time i dont want to do.

I wasn't necessarily thinking just the main chips just a improvement/revision in manufacturing. For all we know this new PS3 Slim will have reduced the cooling system too much and a newer model comes out with a design improvement of bigger heatsinks in four months. Most things go through manufacturing revisions. Sometimes its almost essential to avoid certain revisions mainly early ones. The PS3 Slim was a radical redesign of the ps3 so its not surprising Sony have had to do some changes quite soon. A lot of people returned their ps3 slims because of horrible fan noises, I'm guessing this revision will at least get rid of that. The cooling system has been redesigned over the original slim anyway. The PS3 Slim I tried I don't remember the horrible fan noises but I do remember a huge amount of heat coming out the back perhaps if it had a horrible noisy fan it would have run cooler?

My PS3 runs silent comparred to my 360 - which is one of the newer models, i wouldnt worry too much about waiting for the newer version personally.
