Another £10 reduction on this already great Expansys price! The Singbox Classic streams and controls any AV signal (like a Skybox) and you can watch it on your home network / on the net whilst away from home (e.g. on holiday with no English TV channels). It is an older model but thanks to the built-in freeview tuner a real gem. The "new model" Slingbox Pro with admittingly a few more features like HDMI support is usually priced at £160.
Grab one while you can, unfortunately got one already (for £99 then)

Yes, but expansys are not on their list of retailers that they match.

Shame, but thanks for quick response

This is great box if you travel or live overseas and want UK TV. Picture quality limited by your internet upload speed but better than nothing. For anyone interested, UK ISP BE seems to provide the best upload speed for a decent price (£14/mo), I get around 700Kb/s which is some 3 times more than I got with other ISP's. (TIscali and NTL (now Virgin)).
Paid £140 for mine when they first came out, worth every penny living overseas, get all freeview channels just like home in UK !!
#7
so i could use this to connect to my hummy PVR in one room, and watch in the other room on another pc via a wired home network, or does it have to go through the internet?

and what's the quality like? i presume it won't be anything near perfect?

Dont forget to use the £10 off voucher

I'm not sure this does have a dvb--t tuner built in, i thought it was just an old analogue one!!
#10
It has Freeview for sure. I have had my V+ box wired up with no problems for the last year. In the house you can watch the TV crystal clear in any room on my laptop. If you are going to use it outside the house make sure your broadband provider has a good upload speed.

There is no tuner (either digital nor analogue). The device is a place-shifter and allows a secondary analogue source to be streamed over wide area networks. Signals to control channel changing is sent back down over wide area network from the client. So this device is a server and requires a client connection over wide area network which could be a PC, laptop, PDA or mobile phone (with the correct software).

Although it accepts an analogue signal this does not mean that digital tuners are out of the question. The output of freeview boxes, Sky Digital boxes are analogue via SCART which this device receives.

To summarise its usage:

1. Connect the device you wish to view and control (eg, Freeview box, Sky Box) to Slingbox via SCART.
2. Connect the remote control receiver to Slingbox and point it to the IR sensor of your connected device (ie. the Freeview or Sky box IR sensor).
3. Connect Slingbox to a RJ45 switch on your network (most router's have RJ45 switch built in so a router is fine).

As mentioned the picture is streamed and buffered via Wide Area Network to a connected client anywhere in the world. The software (on the client) allows mouse clicks on an on-screen remote control to be sent back to the SlingBox which in turns fires off IR signals to the receiver (mentioned in 2 above).

The streaming TV can be paused and recorded.

I use something similar which is Pinnacle PCTV To Go Wireless which was similarly priced at Maplins but has both wired and wireless connections to the router.

No it doesn't have a Freeview tuner. An external Freeview box needs to be connected to it. The signal is sent through analogue SCART and transcoded to an MPEG 2 stream.

Hang on: I stand corrected, it does have DVB-T tuner built in!

No your PC doesn't need to be switched on. The device is dichotomous to your PC.

Yes you are right I have corrected my post. I used one 2 years ago when they were priced at £150.

So if I understand correctly, it has to be hard wired to your router and won't send a wireless signal to it?

This is a bit of a problem if you have your skybox downstairs and router upstairs for example. Is there a way round this?
#24
Any one know the £10 voucher code? can't find it.

Yes it only accepts a wired connection to a router or switch. The way round this is to use a wireless access point to connect to your Slingbox downstairs which will talk to your router wirelessly or move the router downstairs. You could also use a long RJ45 cable from Slingbox downstairs to router upstairs as a cheap solution.

Alternatively, the Pinnacle HD TV To Go has inbuilt wireless but costs £50 I think from Maplin. I am not sure if Maplin still stock it. Pinnacle's offering most certainly does not have a DVB-T tuner built in nor any other tuner but it can be used with Windows Media Centre.

As a bonus, once you've installed the client software on your PC, you can use your PC as a fully fledged PVR without buying an extra TV card or software.

As your device external to Slingbox is controlled by the Slingbox itself then it stands to reason that you cannot watch a different channel on a client machine while somebody is watching on a TV in another location.
#36
Does anyone know what the main differences are between this and the newer slingbox solo? If there aren't any major feature differences then I'd rather get this than pay double the price for the solo...

Thanks for posting this. Used the voucher and also got one for £48.74.

I am one happy bunny :)
