Sling box from sling media.

The Slingbox enables you to watch the TV programmes at your house remotely via the Internet, turning virtually any Internet-connected PC into your personal television. It plugs into your TV, satellite receiver or set-top box and uses your broadband connection to pipe the TV signal over the Web, where it can be viewed using special software. It's designed for anyone who has ever found themselves away from home but desperate to watch their favourite soap, sporting event, etc.

Only one of the attached vouchers can be used unfortunatly.
Also use quidco for an aditional 5%-8% discount!

£10 a month for unlimited internet, on top of a 3 mobile plan, £15 or more.
a for cash back, £117.50 actually all without any redemption vouchers

the reason for the price drop is the HD enabled replacement, expect prices to fall more.
#6
i expect it will fall in price just like everything else :-D personally im not ovally interested in HD haha could you imagine the bandwith a sling box would use. Would it even be possible without compression to send the data of a ethernet based network?

It must be, or the product would be pointless, unless it is compressed and decompressed for transmitting, by the slingbox software?

Just watched the Villa v Chelsea match in my hotel room with one of these - brilliant.
#9
anyone know if the router and the sky box need to be in the same room? or can it use a wireless router upstairs for example while plugged into a sky + box downstairs?
#10
Mine only worked properly with it plugged directly to the router i.e. not into a switch or wireless device.
#11
Sling box is brilliant coupled with three.co.uk x-series, you can watch & control your sky box from mobile anywhere you have three coverage. Most useful feature for me is to schedule and record the program remotely, that means i never miss my favourate programs

Great piece of kit, only worried about "fair usage" policy of some ISP's.

Does anyone know how much upstream bandwidth these devices need to run smoothly ? I tried Orb for a while (www.orb.com), which does a similar thing but runs on a PC with a tuner, but the resulting images were very jerky and unwatchable.

I'm interested because these devices were originally designed in the US where typically upstream speeds are the same as download speeds (in the uk, regardless of bandwidth advertised by your ISP, the upload speed is unlikely to exceed 512 Kbps).

Thanks

Yes I see it. Im already on 3 so for me the option would be for me to buy this and purchase 3's mobile broadband. What if the missus is at home watching TV at the same time, does that mean we have to watch same channel?

Suppose you still have to pay for an internet connection there.

any idea of it's bandwidth use LDD? most isps have low limits, that's why i chose the 3 deal spread the load a bit by using the phone a well as laptop

Thanks, i saw your 3 deal yesterday, love the slingbox but no need for another phone contract yet :? Had a look at some sites yesterday for the box on it's own, and J Lewis is the cheapest. Ebay was around £110 + P&P
#25
This is just a fantastic thing that will change the life of anyone who travels with a laptop and likes a bit of telly from home.

I would just order it from amazon for £95 delivered and not have to mess with vouchers.

If you're a 3 customer already you can still get the free slingbox if you buy the x series gold add-on (providing you've got one of the compatible handsets) for £10 pm. Catch is you need to agree to a 12month term of xseries gold.

Good value though considering you get unlimited web browsing, skype calls, slingbox, orb etc for this price (and 3 are up and running with HSDPA now so it all actually works!)

I got my free slingbox by going into a 3-store, I had to speak to 3 customer service first (did it whilst I was in the shop) to get the xseries add-on put onto my account and then the bloke in the shop just checked that it had been successfully added and gave me the slingbox.

The only downside to running it is that it won't play full screen so doesn't make the most of my N95 display, instead the image only occupies about half of the available display area with a big 'Slingbox' banner underneath.
#30
Without HSDPA x-series is rubbish to me (just me, don't shoot me down!) as i've N73 from three and MDA Vario II. I'm using Vario II, HSDPA enabled with three.co.uk SIM, broadband speedtest hits 1.5meg or more for most of the time.

I would say, get on to cheapest three tariff. Buy slingbox from johnlewis or elsewhere, upgrade to X-series (you are not tied to any contract) and get a decent PDA style phone with HSDPA support and enjoy full blown service.
#31
Has anybody tried slingbox with a eurovox? Can you change the channels ok?

And is cable (128k) upload adequate? Any problems with usage limits on cable broadband?

True, but the N95 does work and isn't on their list (despite 3 selling the phone in a big 'X-Series' box!). I think you need the 3 firmware on the phone for it all to work properly though (not just any old sim free one).
#35
i got one of these and they are great gadgets! While the price isnt amazing it is one of the lower ones by a few quid :) can be bought from pcworld instore for £99

The software neogates bandwith to suit the connection ie LAN or WAN, WIRELESS etc

I've been using this site for about 2 years, but figured it's about time I gave something back.

bellamy_47

The HD side is only useful if using on your own LAN, over the internet unless you have a massive upload then it will be pointless.

LongDongDave
What sort of bandwidth do these use, if left on output 24 hrs?

They only use bandwidth when connected to, but if you were connected to all the time then it would just use whatever upload you have available.
There is a setting so you can optimise the the bandwidth automatically against the connection, or alternatively you can fix this at whatever you like.

LongDongDave
Great piece of kit, only worried about "fair usage" policy of some ISP's.

Majority of ISP's only care about downloads not uploads, so you should not be affected.

Originally I was on a 256 Kbps upload speed - this was watchable but not great. I moved to Sky (Flakey Net /Easynet) as they have 768 Kbps & its now pretty good even for sports (although SKY BB is not very reliable IMHO)

Overall these are great. I travel a lot & use in hotel rooms abroad. And I also use around the house/garden with the laptop (This is where the HD model would be useful to me)
