  I stopped eating smarties after someone told me they make the blue colouring from frying a specific kind of beatle. Not sure how true this is but I don't want to chance it...

  Not true. George Harrison was never used to make Smarties.
  
  But seriously, it used to be the red smarties made with cochineal, which is crushed beetle shell, but they don't do that anymore. But cochineal is in loads of foods, and often isn't even called that.
