Apart from the fact that this one doesn't button up (even at the back), what's the difference between one of these and a normal dressing gown (which can button up and thus not fall off when you get up)?

These are great if you dont want to put the heating on too much at beginning/end of winter.

Difference to dressing gown is its bigger and not fitted to you can tuck your feet in and get really cosy - its just as advertised - a blanket you can put your hands through. Not great if you are going to be getting up, sitting down, getting up again etc

I have a slanket and bought one of these snuggies for my husband as its alot cheaper - have to say that for me the slanket wins hands down as its alot thicker/heavier and it wasnt full of static when I opened the packet - although a good wash with softner did solve the static problem I had with the snuggie.
