I have to say I think solar lights are a waste of money. They look pretty, yes, but IME they don't cast enough light to be practical or useful. If you want them to illuminate a path or something, don't get your hopes up, even if they are half-price. I got a nice set of stainless steel ones last year but 12 months later they're just so much scrap (admittedly I have two young sons who like football...)

When I fit garden lights again I'm going to pay a bit more and get mains-powered ones that actually cast light around the place and last for more than a year.

Agreed Noghar :)

Bought the 10 lights @ 50% off but literally wasted a tenner. Even the 10 lamps together wont be sufficient to illuminate a 1 sq. ft. area. OK if you're happy to have tiny dots in the garden for a few hours.

i agree, i had 6 plastic ones by ring setup in my garden - they looked ok - along with a decent rock light (avoid really cheap ones) - the rock light was about £30 and powerful enough to throw light over the pond and alluminate the adajcent garage! - all lights were link to a dusk to dawn adjustable sensor with a high power trasnformer and rcd adaptor....worked beautifully for 5 years until we moved house.

I'll go with you on the solar lights - I'd been onto my 3rd set (local brats broke them each time!!) and decided enough was enough..

Trouble is that (my) B & Q don't seem to stock mains-powerered ones any more.. I'm all for saving the planet etc, but not when it means the only product available simply doesn't work...

Any chance someone could point me in the direction of some cheap(ish) mains powered lights?

Mind you, with it being the time of year, it's less pressing now - the chances of me breaking out the Barbie now are pretty slim - sassen frassen rassen..

Toodles!
