My local Poundworld had some of these last week-the plastic cases they were in were similar to CD cases.

Ditto. Where abouts is the one in warrington? Is there one in Liverpool at all?

Voted hot - great deal for some ace films!
#9

Has anyone actually had a look at the price of some of these DVDs if you were specifically looking for them. Do a search on google, I searched for Jaws:

Jaws (DVD) £5.89 - www.sendit.com
Jaws DVD £5.99 - Play.com
Jaws £11.39 - Bensons World

These are absolute bargains, people may have these on video but its always great to update your collection from video to DVD!!!!

I bought a DVD from Pound land, a John Wayne film. Pirated I`m affraid, a very bad one at that. Didn`t have the heart(Or guts) to walk back in there to get my pound back. What price an education! Cheap but not cheerfull.
#15
These ones are real dvd's I bought some nd they arent hk's or anything

Are you sure it wasnt just an old film, a lot of the cheap £1 films you get at places are just cheaply transferred but they are real.

Unless you went to one of those cheap local ones not a brand name one
#16
Nope, it looked a proper DVD

Lol I dont think any highstreet chain is gunna be selling pirate DVDs. It was probably just really terrible transfer. I've rented DVDs from Blockbuster in the past that have looked as if the DVD company just hooked a VHS up to a computer and did the DVD that way.

Some people have said that these DVD's would make good presents...

The fact they don't come in proper cases makes me think otherwise.

Good for buying for yourself though if you are not bothered.
#19
Well they will fit in the bulky christmas stockings more than regular ones.

Besides what use is the original box anyway

Having been a seller of DVD's and CD's I think I know the difference. Having got it back home, the photo within the dvd case was a photocopy and the dvd was likewise. I don't think you get a photocopied insert without the company, whoever did it, knowing that the insert was copied. I take your point with the dvd and the bad transfer, but how can you explain away a photocopied insert?
The dvd case was a very good case. At a good guess they originated from China.
#22
The only way id say that happened was as I say it wasnt a brand name £1 shop it was one of those old fashioned ones run by familys
#23
Voted hot, I live in Warrington so I can go to the same store.
#24
Hmmm Capitan Pugwash must have an assistant which made me less suspicious. Lol
One other gripe was the paint brushes, which left more bristles on the painted doors than on the brush...Both went in de bin :-(
#25
Things cost £1 in poundworld?? SHOCK! That's deffo a hot deal right there!

Not pirated but 'public domain', most of the John Wayne and oldies on the 21st Century (think there 22nd Century or something now) labels are low quality public domain versions of the films. They only have a RRP of a pound.

You can legally get and watch the public domain titles at the Internet Archive for Free plenty of John Wayne there!

They do get some good titles in poundland sometimes as well....but you have to check regularly before the 'ebay' mob clear the shelves :whistling:

they did have some good titles in mine today

Poundworld - as opposed to Poundland - is relatively new and there aren't many of them around yet.

Wow! Nice movies! I wish I'd read this thread sooner!

Saying that though.... there's so many pound shops and they all have very similar names (with the word pound in them) that I have no idea what ones are near to me :-(

If anyone intends to buy any of these DVDs from the Salford branch, go to the market first. I saw a stall there selling exactly the same DVDs for 50p each. Definitely not ko - pirates wouldnt bother for 50p! This stall is not one of the many ko dvd stalls there.

.. and no, that is not my stall either, despite this being my first post here :-)
#30
impossible - you cant sell trilogies of good films like jaws or american pie etc for 50p and make profit - dvds come in dvd cases, not CD cases.

if anyone has bought them and would like to post pics, id like to see them.

The DVD's are in CD cases. Waste of money.

Had a look in Uxbridge Poundland - non of the titles the OP mentioned were available (shame because I would have liked Back to the future)
They did have Donni Darko (great film) and Judge Dredd as well as a host of other obscure titles though.

I bought a great little device for backing up mobile phone SIM cards though. You simply slide the SIM into the device and press a button to backup the data. You can then restore it to another SIM card or keep it as a backup.
#33
I saw these in the Nottingham branch a couple of weeks ago. Like people have already said, they don't come on their original cases, just plain CD jewel cases. I bought Back To The Future 2 because I managed to crack that disc from my boxset. Can't go wrong for a quid.

Yup.

When a film gets old and the major DVD companies have finished with it they often get licenced to minor distributors at a knock down price.

Sometimes the licence can be as low as a grand or two to duplicate and distribute older/unpopular films.

This is when cut-price companies step in and produce DVDs at a quid that the likes of Poundland sell.
