Play 1 is you have a small room, this if you want slightly bigger sound and can afford it

The conundrum I have is 2 x Play 1 is not much more if I did want extra.

I had the same dilema; i.e. 2 x Play:1's or a Play:3. I went for the Play:3 in the (noted on HUKD) deal from Curry's on Sunday (the same price as this). I'm pleased but yes, it's down to your budget I guess.

It is entirely up to you mate. That's why Sonos is so good - it offers great flexibility! issues to consider: do you have room and 2 sockets for 2 speakers? what is your budget? what is your room size? do you want to achieve good stereo separation with the speakers? where are you placing the speakers?
1x Play3 is more compact and robust than 2x Play1s, all down to you and your speaker placement

Damn you!
I already have a Play:3, Play:1 and Playbar......

Ideally if you have the room for 2 x Play 1's and the plug sockets etc (with enough space between them) I'd personally go down this route.

Play 3's are great for mid size rooms (I have mine in the corner of the kitchen and it sounds fantastic)

Not sure what you mean regarding robustness. Barring the Play 1 being dented (in the same way the Play 3 grill could be) there's nothing between them.

Actually, the Play 1 is the only humidity resistant speaker in the range, therefore if you plan to place them in the Kitchen or any where near a bathroom I'd suggest the Play 1 is a better choice.

I have 2x Play 3, both placed individually in bedrooms of good size. I also have 2x Play 1 paired as rear channels on my home cinema zone (Playbar and SUB).

Aesthetically i much prefer the look of the Play 1, it's a lot easier on the eye, particularly when mounted on some Flexson desk stands (see my deals, currently at Amazon on sale).

Sonically, there's very little to choose between them, and a Play 1 is more than capable of filling any room size unless you want your music party loud - for normal listening where you might want to hold a conversation or hear a phone ring it's more than ample. Where they differ is their presentation, the Play 1 is much better with highs, and produced good clear mids with a surprising amount of bass given the size. The Play 3 for me is a little less graceful with delivering the highs but produces good mids and better lows. So in that sense, it comes down to music choice, if you want great classical, stringed instruments and vocals, Play 1. If you want drums, Play 3.

If it's within your budget though, 2x Play 1 will vastly outgun a Play 3 when you factor Trueplay (read about it) and separation. I'd also say that 2x Play 3 grouped is somewhat overkill, so again it comes down to aspiration.

Another point to consider is that with the Play 1 being humidity resistant I use mine outside in the summer time with less fear of weather (not rain!) damaging the innards of the speaker.

Get a Play 1.

No contest in my mind.

I have both and due to the placement and stereo separation, IMHO paired P1's sound way better than a single Play 3.

Play 1 wins no contest if you don't have extra 60-80 quid to spare :P

As above, 2 play 1's if you can stretch to the additional cost
If not, you won't be disappointed with any Sonos speaker tbh

Except deeper bass, more well rounded and fuller sound lol

What if he's just got a bookshelf or 1 corner to put the speaker(s) into? :)

Surprisingly Apple are selling the Play 1 for £149.95 (same as everywhere else) BUT you get a free voucher for £29.97 to use on any Apple products, apps, music etc. It is suggested 3 months Apple Music on website - but T&Cs confirm you can use on other stuff above.

It has deeper bass, no question. But, in doing so it loses some of the clarity in the upper end. As I said, whether you prefer the uppers or lowers is down to personal taste but to my ear at least the Play 1 delivers a cleaner sound.

If I had to pick a speaker as a Sonos star product, I'd say the Play 1 is it (quality/price).

I also love my Sub... but that's another thing entirely :o)

I bought one of these as spares and repairs off gumtwea for £15 and took it apart and repaired it. I'd have to say, it's one of the best engineered audio kit I've been lucky enough to crack open and lay my hands on. (and I do it all the time)
The power circuit was more than adequately isolated from the audio components. Thus everything was intact after the assumed power surge.
The PCBs had massive amounts of vibration isolators and the sealing design for the speaker components were very detailed and effective.
Once I fixed it (had to order a part from Farnell) I was surprised how loud these things get with nary a hint of distortion and even levels across the frequency range. (bass was a tab boosted but that's what makes it fun)
By 80% volume levels, it was too loud for my 15mx12m studio room.
Awesome stuff.

Well obviously that's a very specific example! Haha
You can't go wrong any way really with sonos IMO
I've got two 1s and a first gen 5
Next up will be playbar and sub probably if / when I can justify!

Am I the only one that thinks the Play:3 sucks? I might be mislead by a defective unit on a Currys store, but I would prefer the sound balance of a Play:1 over a Play:3! Let alone 2xPlay:1...

I've read a lot off people saying get 2 x 1s rather than a 3. As you own a 5 and two 1s would you suggest I buy a 5 or three 1s?
