£219 for the black version. Just ordered one of these to create a stereo pair. Thanks for the heads-up

Great price, heat given. Play 5 also appears to be reduced. After a the 2nd gen white Play 5 but just CANNOT stand the black grill on it, just don't get why they didn't put a white or silver grill on the white ones. Even if they did a special edition all white one or something. :(

isn't the play 3 the worst one ? reviews were saying it's on par with the 1, spend a little more and get a stereo pair of 1s maybe

I have 1's and 3's and I find the 3 significantly better than a 1 as a single speaker, especially in a larger room, but would agree a stereo pair of 1's sounds better again (although obviously more expensive)

Funny, I've got 3 of those but never actually clicked that the white unit had a black grill. I kinda see your point, but it does look good.

The Play:1 is outstanding for the money and, at launch/review time I'd have argued the Play:3 wasn't worth the money. Since Trueplay tuning, however, it is much improved and sounds very good. They also make much better surround speakers when paired with a PLAYBAR.

It all depends on your budget. I'd take 2 x P1 over a single P3. But 2 x P3 is better, of course. 2 x P3 is better than a Gen 1 P5 but the Gen 2 P5 is a whole new level and hard to compare.

2 x P1 sound pretty good and don't take up much space, just can never be as full range as a larger unit.

John Lewis has priced matched - might be worth buying from them instead!

i prefer the P1 to P3, looks better and cheaper and sounds as good. i never tried it with trueplay however.

I listened carefully to Play:1, 3 and 5 (Gen 1) (pre-Trueplay admittedly) and the 3 definitely seemed the weak link. We now have a 3x Play:1 and a Play:5 Gen 2 in the house :) Oh, and a Connect in the back of an Arcam AVR. Sources are CDs ripped to a NAS, and Deezer. Got 12 months free with the first Play:1, then 6 months free from the Three mobile deal.
But if you want a 3, this is clearly a good deal.

Interesting. I wonder if they are going to bring out a Play:3 2nd Gen....

Trueplay works very well, highly recommend, just annoying you need to use an iPhone for it.

This is all obviously very subjective but no doubt that at the time of launch the Play:1 was almost as good as the Play:3 - but it's not stereo. The only way to get stereo sound from the Play:1 is to buy two of them.

Play:3, as the name suggests, has 3 drivers and allows stereo sound - at least in the horizontal position. Sure, you don't get much separation but nevertheless, the stereo channels are reproduced as they should be.

I've never been a big fan of a single P3 on its own, but as a pair it's rather outstanding - especially if you add a SUB. I'd take it over a single P5 any day. If music quality is important to you, stereo separation should be part of that. If so, a single P5 won't cut it.

That would be good to see. A higher quality P3 would be a good pricepoint and, if they added a headphone socket, likely very popular.

can I somehow stream music from utube to the Sonos?

Probably not the answer you were after, but if you have a smartTV with an optical output, and a Sonos Connect that has an optical input...
I actually have that, but I have never specifically tried streaming music from YouTube to Sonos. I had a spare optical cable, so it is connected.

PLAYBAR is the best option for this.

Nice speakers, great price. I have two of them on Flexson stands (which you can pick up off eBay for about 45 quid and they sound much better than they did sitting on furniture.

I've got a couple of Play 1 and one Play 3 all admittedly bought after Trueplay. The Play 3 definitely sounds better.

I did read a review which said that the Play 1 was as good as the Play 3 before buying any of them but never understood why. I guess Trueplay made the difference.

Sonos price drop due to the Amazon Echo release?

I have a Play 3 amongst my 8 Sonos pieces (including old Play 5) and it's by far the weakest of the lot. It's still decent but if I wanted one speaker for a bedroom, Play 1 mono would win over Play 3!

A living area would need at least 2x Play 1s, although that's coming from someone looking to buy their 2nd sub

Bought one of these on Saturday for the Mrs' birthday from Richer Sounds. They also give a 6 year warranty at that price, so might be worth purchasing there instead?

The Connect doesn't have an optical input - it only has an optical output. Only device with an optical input is the PLAYBAR.

You are of course correct - That optical cable of mine is from Connect to AVR. Too many cables, too many connections - and too long ago since it was all put together!

Strange how a unit with £3 off (been 219 on Amazon for a couple of months at least) gets hot, yet when play 5 posts giving roughly £40 off go freezing?
#32
The Play 3 is the oldest of the speakers, the Play 5 (2nd Gen) being the newest and then the Play 1. So logic would suggest that newer tech would sound better.

For the last couple of years Sonos have released a twin pack of Play 1's as a sort of starter package usually in the run up to Christmas.

Usually £299 so £150 each unless you can get a discount on the package.

Pair of 3s still better than a five though ( have both).
