aahh ok, pro's with this one is it should support downloads from Iplayer, the other one has bluetooth (I have the other one and wish it did iplayer, however bluetooth streaming to mmy car stereo was the main reason for buying it)

I bought one of these from Amazon at Xmas when they were £78 for a week or so and I have got to say they are brilliant players.
The battery life is awesome at 40hours and the options for playing are so numerous compared to my older sony NW HD5 and its truly drag and drop at last no Sonicstage proprietary software malarky.
The sound quality is also second to none in this price range, and the S739 with the noise reduction really makes no difference at all to the listening pleasure. Headphones are cool too!
One little downer is that is doesnt come with a charger its all through USB but thats fine with this battery life. I would also recommend getting a Tuff-Luv leather holder for it they are well worth the money.
Enough Yak yak, I enthuse too much about this player to my friends too.
So I give heat and rep for the find, and highly recommend this player. Nuff Said.

Just read the blurb on Tesco and its slightly WRONG the battery gives 40hrs MUSIC and about 6 HOURS of Video not 60 as the blurb on Tescos says. Although I have had a lot more than 6 hours video, because it depends on the bit rate and enconding of the file... :)

Hmm something tells me that there are alot of mistakes (friday job) But from specs and everything it should be "Sony NWZ-S639".

As NWZS636FB Is 4GB version canadian version of the 639.

NNWZS639FB Should be no Z.

Bar that an amazingly hot deal for the 639 which is like £110 elsewhere. Heat added.
#10
Thanks OP, I just ordered one.
I bumped my order to over £90 & used the eCoupon XXMYH9 to get £9 off when you spend £90, total came to £89.22 after the discount was taken off.

I added 6 Tesco DVD Library Cases 10 Pack 901-2187 £1.73 each, so I've got 60 dvd cases coming with mine.

I've wanted this player since it came out, looked at it enough times at Amazon & Play, this offer gave me the push to buy it.
Cheers

Where did you get the case for it?
#16
I bought the case on Ebay because I had a 20% sellers discount voucher at the time, but it was on Amazon too as well. The Leather and stitching is very good also available in Veggie leather.
Type in "Veggie Leather case cover for Sony Walkman S Series BLK" on an Ebay search and it comes up with the Veggie version which is the one I bought but it was a bit cheaper than the ones I just saw on Ebay.
Its a great cas and fits like a glove and really protects stitching is first rate and Looks smart too.
Hope this helps... Same one i leather is on Amazon.

Ditto. I have had three colleagues and a mum-in-law ask "Which iPod should I go for?" To which I tell them to buy a real MP3 player and they have all bought one of these. Lovin' it!!!

I've got one of these and they are the puppies privates....

I should charge Sony commish.....

RIP iPod - Long live the Sony

If you go and look at the review on places like head-fi you'll find that the 639 has superior sound quality.

The 829 is quite well know for hiss, but I can see how the bluetooth headphones could be a draw.

As far as sound quality goes though this is the better player and is cheaper too :)
#23
This player is so easy to use, my eight year old loves it (it's mine) for her I let her use my overear headphones, the sound and build quality are superb, and at this price excellent value...anybody umming and aahhing go for it....they only negative is the limited number of docks available, mind you I use mine through some creative T40's and it is an awesome set up....the FM radio even came in useful during the snowy weather for listening to local radio...

I used Anyvideo converter the free edition

http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

Open the software then drag all the files you want to convert then select either mobile phone MP4 or customised MP4.

Didnt use media player or the media manager software to transfer, just copied all the files I converted then pasted them into the video folder of the walkman in Windows explorer

I use Format Factory
Here's a quick "How To" for anyone who doesn't know-

Start Format Factory, then click Video, then "All to Mobile Device" then change "Manufacturers" to "Sony PSP" the change Model to "PSP 320x240 MPEG4"
Next is the add file screen, make sure you uncheck the box "Append setting name" add your video files, click OK, then click "Start" at the top of the window
That's it. Never timed a covert, but its quick,
I get a 2hour file at around 270 to 300mb
You wouldn't want to watch the results on a PC, but for a 2" screen on a mp3 player this setting is fine. You can adjust the audio bitrate, I keep mine at 160kb.
You can also improve the picture by increasing the bit rate, the default is 384kb which is also fine for an mp3 player.
Just bear in mind the the higher you set the bitrate, the larger the file size will be.
Good luck

OP, thanks for the post, I'm loading my player with video's while writing this :)

When u copied the video files to your walkman did they appear in order. I even added 01 02 03 at the start and they still are out of order.

One other thing, the wired earphoned. I know alot of them now have one longer than the other from the joint but on mine the left one is 10cm and the right one 50cm. Is that the normal???????????????

How long does the first battery charge take? Mine has been charging for 7 hours and still won't turn on when I try it.

I presume any key is suppose to turn it on?

When plugged into the laptop I can see the device, and it says its charging, but just keeps charging.....

Mine took about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to charge. The battery icon flashes when charging, it stops flashing when fully charged.
Maybe its a fault with the USB socket? Have you tried another USB socket?

No, mine show in the order they were copied over, I would rather it was a,b,c, but I couldn't find any setting to do that.
Unless you copy files to the Sony z to a, I don't see how to change the order they are listed.
I'll just live with it, its not that big a deal.
Changing the file names to 1,2,3 won't make any difference, its the order they are copied onto the player.

I also tried a BBC i-player download, I had to start playing that file in windows first, when I first tried to copy to the Sony it wouldn't copy, it said to play in windows, then copy.
When I did that it worked.
I don't know if the 7 day time limit still applies to downloaded i-player files, I'm going to leave the file on my Sony to find out.

When I copied my files across I went to the folder on WIndows explorer which were all in order. Then pasted them into the video folder on the walkman, but when i browsed the walkman a few of them weren't in order.

Also were your headphones a lot longer on one side than the other from where they join

Yes
I don't like the round the back of the neck type either so I'm not going to use them, but as I have loads of headphones, its not a problem for me.
ATM my pair of choice is a pair of Shure SE110.
I also have a set of Sennheiser CX 300's as well as Skullcandy Lowrider's & a few more lying around.
I was looking at the Goldring GX200 Headphones at Play.com a few days ago.
They cost £15, they have good reviews, they were even on The Gadget Show a few weeks ago, they liked them, maybe worth a look if you can't get on with the sony pair.

Mine clearly had a duff battery. Wouldn't charge on several computers. Got a refund and by some magic there is a replacement on it's way (I'll post more about that tomorrow when I see the replacement). I had noticed that the box had been previously opened and re-sealed with "sony" tape so I suspect it might have been a refurb or reconditioned unit. It did look new.

One nice feature I did find is if you right click on the "Walkman" in the pc drive listing it shows you how full the battery is. Mine always said 0%.

Also be aware mine came with firmware 1.1 and there is a 1.11 available to dowload from sony if you feel brave. enough.

On converting videos I found I had time on my hands so compared Any Format and Format Factory. Not a scientific test by any means, but Format Factory won on time to convert, and a slightly smaller target .mp4 file. Obviously couldn't actually watch the results from either yet.

If you have problems with the order tracks play in try something like http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ to update the order

Good post!! I used these instructions (slight difference as 'PSP 320X240 MPEG' was not listed as a Model option so i chose 'Compatible MP4 320X240 MPEG4' which is probably the same thing.

It took 18 minutes to encode a 700MB avi file to MP4 on a Dual Core AMD Opteron 165 @2.5 with 2GB RAM and the videos play perfectly on the Sony. It would probably take much less time on higher spec machine.

Oh, that's odd.
Sorry about that, i copied the settings word for word, maybe my install of format factory is not the latest version.

Also be aware mine came with firmware 1.1 and there is a 1.11 available to download from sony if you feel brave. enough.

Just checked mine, its 1.10 firmware.
I'm not going to update the firmware until I have to. If it aint broke, don't fix it! :)

That was about the order that videos was showing on the Sony, not audio.
Video is shown in the order it is installed on the Sony, not as you might expect, a,b,c.
Still, it means whenever you load a new video, it will show first in the list of videos.

Not a scientific test by any means, but Format Factory won on time to convert, and a slightly smaller target .mp4 file. Obviously couldn't actually watch the results from either yet.

You can play back the files on your pc though? Just to check them?
If not, try GOM player. Its my playback software of choice.

Its a shame when a retailer does something like that, puts you off using them.
Glad they found another in stock to send to you.

I'm pretty certain this offer was a mis-price, they seemed to have set the 16gb version to the 8gb promotional price. They also have mixed up the memory sizes and sony model numbers on the silver and red versions. I'm hoping I will be picking up a sliver one to replace the faulty black one today, but there is a small chance it will be a 4Gb version not 16Gb.
#38
The replacement silver and orange one turned up OK and charged just fine. Firmware update to 1.11 went OK too, took about 4 minutes.

Yes, thankfully it was the 16gb one. Tesco have the wrong modle numbers for the silver and red ones. They only seem to have 8gb and 16gb ones. The silver one is pretty funky looking.

I'm not sure if the firmware added anything (there was a release note but I didn't look at it sorry)I'm a believer of doing it on day 1 so I can return it DOA if the update fails!
