Great price, almost tempted to defect from Nikon just to see what all the fuss is about the Sony, specs look a step up, but .... ?
#3
It's a decent price for a decent camera. There is a good review/overview here:
http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/reviews/digitalslr/127941/1/sony-alpha-a450-review.html

As always, before you commit to a SLR system, go to the shop and handle the camera first. You'll be amazed how different each model feels when handled.

Got this camera from Comet in August for £287, lovely camera and it can use old minolta/konica lenses too, so there is a wealth of cheap lenses available from auction sites!!!

Pros
Dual memory slot MSpro and SD with selector switch
Good battery life
Optical viewfinder (very important for me)

Cons
Doesn't do video
View screen is fixed

Nice camera, nice price
Anyone considering this, take a look round a local Jessops or something to get a feel of the body, was originally going to go for a Canon, but hated the feel of the 1000D so ended up with a Nikon D40 and love it! Really didn't like the A200 I had a play with, if I'm honest, but it's practically all personal opinion, you really can't go too wrong with any DSLR these days

Great price but still not sure about Sony.
Do any pro's use Sony?
Giving you heat though :)
#8
Is this a pro camera? No, it's marketed at the lower end of the market, so while you can't expect wonders you can expect a certain degree of quality as with most things :)
Sony took over the brilliant Konica Minolta brand and shares the same lens mount as far as I know, which means the user has a huge backlog of lenses at their disposal for next to nothing as previously mentioned by Simondu2009!

Well possibly, but as a rule, the pro DSLR market is Nikon and Canon.

Then there are Hasselbalds/Leicas etc....

I'm not sure that professionals would even use a low-end Canon, so I doubt that the brand is relevant at this end of the market. After all, it's the lens that makes the picture.

I got this for ~£280 on special offer a while back so it's an excellent deal at this price.

At this level of the DSLR market I don't think it very relevant what pro photographers use. Sony make good cameras but read the reviews and go and look at one.

My only other comment is that anyone looking for an entry level DSLR should also look at Pentax before deciding. Pentax get a little overlooked but make veer goo cameras but their DSLRs are compatible with a massive range of cheap legacy lenses from a range of manufacturers.
#15
ive been looking at this camera for a while now as i am after my first dslr. The spec is pretty good i think its a mid level dslr for a entry level price. Theres no af in live view which might put some ppl off.

Ive been looking at this and the canon 1000d and this is prob the best option. This has IS in the camera body and not in the lens as on the nikon and canon which makes the lens for the sony cheaper.
banned#17
Its a great midrange amateur camera but beware of accessories! nowhere near the amount that Canon or Nikon have. Sigma do some good new lenses and virtually all old Minolta AF lenses are supported on Sony DSLRs. The Minolta lenses whilst good are holding their price now people are buying them for the Sony DSLR's

How so? That doesn't include a lens and is nearly £50 more expensive.

But thanks for editing your original post.

Good advice, I was only asking the question because I didn't know.

Sony make great Cameras right up to "Pro" level, but you'll find prices at the top end are all on a par with the top Canons and Nikons anyway. . . I have an Alpha 200 and it takes great pictures, has lots of creative control and a lot of lenses available new and second hand. I'm sure this is a great camera, and is a steal at that price. . .
#22
Seems okay - but just about what its worth. much rather have a nex-3 given better image quality and compact body; was 350 on amazon a while ago.
#23
If I remember correctly, sony actually make the sensors you find in nikon dslrs.

Not that it's relevant here, other than for the person asking "are sony any good?" and "isn't it all canon and nikon?" etc.

I got a canon 1000D the other day, glad I did but you will get mixed reviews on ever single entry level dslr..I tihnk they are all the flippin same!lol

I wouldn't be surprised if that did happen with the CCD's. Similar thing goes on with TV's and a panels, or used to anyway.

Looks like a good deal to me.

I have an A500 which is similar to this one. Its a nice camera but does not have video, is a bit plasticy and quite large.

In many ways the Pentax K-X is a nicer camera if you can find one at a similar price as it feels better built, can shoot HD video and is smaller.

Keep in mind that the big advantage that Pentax and Sony have over Nikon and Canon is that their anti-shake systems are in the camera and not the lens. Therefore any compatible lens will benefit from ant-shake even 20 year old manual focus K mount glass in the case of the Pentax.

There is so much brand snobbery when it comes to cameras, if you don't have cannon or nikon then you are a nobody according to the zelots. The fact is that while at the top end Nikon & Canon may be the pro's choice at the consumer level they are all much of a muchness. One advantage to the Sony cameras is that they have in body image stabilisation this means any lens old or new can be used where as the Canon & Nikon cameras require special stabilised lenses at a premium price if you want to take advantage of image stabilisation.

You will get good results from all the consumer DSLR's, don't waste your money spending more on the camera, put it towards a better lens as the kit lenses are ok but you can get far better results with a higher quality lens. Cameras are all highly capable now it is just the lenses that hold them back.

You'll not get a DSLR with video and AF in live view for near this price. Still a good deal.

Why do people bother about HD Video on a camera? The last thing I want a camera for is for recording videos. If I wanted that I would get myself a decent camcorder.Same with live view, the amount of people on photography forums that actually say that they never use the function but I suppose it could come in handy sometimes.

These shot where taken of my little girl with the Sony A700 and cheap Sony AF DT 30 F2.8 Macro lens.

How do you know the nex-3 has a better image quality? I've not seen any comments on that. In fact, quite the opposite to be honest. The A450 will have the same if not better sensor and the potential of better lenses gives it far more potential.

+1, you will likely pay around £70 for a good example (no scratches or dings and no oil on the blades)

Having read everybody's comments I thought i'd give a little OP final thought.

Doesn't have video - Correct, but niether do any of the other similarly priced DSLRs about at the moment.
There are better cameras out there - Correct, but find me a better one at this price or less.
It's not well reviewed - Also partly correct, but this is reviewed as a mid range DSLR for its RRP of £500, compared against other mid range alternatives, compared to other cameras for the same price this would fare a lot better.
Doesn't have live-view AF - For this price be grateful it has live view at all, there are a lot out there that don't, and shooting through the screen would be a rarely used feature unless you want to completely replicate your compact camera.

Sorry I feel I have to write all this, but people are writing comments comparing this to cameras for £100-£200 more than the offer price, are they better than this one? Probably, that's why they're more expensive.

This is not a terrible camera, or even a bad camera, it is actually rather a good camera for a fantastic price that any amateur photographer should be able to get a lot of enjoyment from.

Oh and the auto HDR function is fantastic.
