hot from me

I just bought the Sony a200 and loving it..The Sony a700 is what i will hopefully end upgrading to next year.Hot deal.

Good deal for this camera, gets some very good reviews, i would imagine that a new model will be out by next year as this has been around for a while now.

The A700 is great, but the lens packaged with it here doesn't do it justice. Personally I would buy it body only, and buy a different lens to put on it. The body can be had for £500 here

Even with the short comings of having propriator flash shoe, meagre low light performance, no live view or movie mode, it's an interesting price for a professional DSLR. I would want the Canon 40d instead which is double the price :(

Hot from me. Had this in my basket at least twice now (I have the A100 and a reasonable selection of lenses). Only thing putting me off is the September announcement of the A500 and A550 which may (or may not) feature LiveView and Video.

Not going to get into a camera holy war here but low light performance is excellent, these are ISO3200 shots;

Add in-body stabilisation, built in wireless flash and it's a cracking bit of kit.

I just got a canon 500D for a very similar price from pixmania :)

I paid a lot less than £591 as they compensated me and Quidco also went through =D
Well happy with my Canon... Truly amazing. 1080p recording is out of this world, not so much when things are fast paced. 720p is amazing - none of the less! =D

I recieved the camera yesterday and i posted some pics on facebook.

I think this is quite a good deal esp if u do not need any special lenses.

Cameraworld has the same offering for a lot more!

That's great, but you're not comparing apples with apples.

The 500D is what they regard as a "pro-sumer" camera. i.e. it's a step up from an entry level DSLR but not much else.

As someone pointed out earlier, the equivalent Canon would be something like a EOS40D.

And I can tell you, not only is it twice the price, but there aren't any cheap decent lenses around like there are for this one! The first thing you will find if you buy any DSLR is that you want more lenses. Take this into account!!!

Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of Sony, but this is a great price for a good camera. Certainly if you're looking to spend £600, you could do a lot worse!

so in a couple of sentences, what are the key benefits for someone who has used the a200 for a year and got comfortable with it ?

ccd is the same size? so photos not necessarily better per se?

thanks for any opinions.

Plenty of threads on DPReview.com about this, just do a search on the Sony SLR forum.

I'm looking closely at the Nikon D5000 - is this not a better camera at a similar price?

Although I agree with the arguments you've made, particularly about the cost of glass, I disagree that it isn't a valid comparrison.

Consumer/Pro Sumer/Pro are just industry lables which define their idea of the cameras market position and give a clue to its feature set.

But if one has £600 to spend, its perfectly valid to compare every camera you can get for your money. And its not necessarily going to be the pro camera which will best fit your needs. Because not everyone ranks features the same way, let alone the way the industry does when positioning cameras. I may not want video, but if it is high up your list, the A700's market positioning shouldn't overide that.

Exactly.

There are loads of good cheap lenses to be had for this on e-bay, minolta lenses fit this camera. I have the A200 and it's a great camera, only downside is the fact that it doesn't have a standard hot shoe for the flash.

The kit lens that comes with it is crap though.

I think it's probably worth mentioning that this isn't a novice digital SLR camera. If you're in the market for entry level and you've never used a DSLR before then look elsewhere.

Otherwise this is a hot price.

Now £549.99

Great price for a basic, entry-level camera:thumbsup:
