review doesn't sound like this model is at the top of it's class.

Definately not, but a very good bet for DLSR for beginners. Also the body has the IS already and any non IS lens also will give the IS output, which is one of its kind for this price. :)

if you notice Jessops package has 18-70mm Lens whereas this package has only 18-55mm :) so worth adding a £10 more I think?
There's 2 "deals" on Jessops... One has 18-55 and the better one at same price (18-70):

I blame it on my eyesight. 20pav08 Yup 10 Pound Jessops deal also looks promising.

dyxum.com reviews would suggest that the 18-55 lens is the better of the two
I have used both and would tend to agree

Personally I would go with the 18-55 from Jessops. It may be £10 more but comes with a reasonable tripod as well.

I own the 290 which is identical but doesn't feature live view and the tilting LCD, it's an excellent camera, I've had some fantastic shots with it and had them printed out at poster size from Costco and they really do look great at that size, 36" x 24" print, the 14.1 megapixels helps here

Well, I've had the 350 for a couple of years and have completed many weddings with it & no complaints! Also have the 550 now as well. Remember, it's the lenses you use that make the difference. You can use all Minolta AF lenses with all Sony Alpha DSLR's - all of which you can pick up second hand at reasonable prices. Trust me, you will get excellent results! So, this is a great price imho!
