This is perfect for n00bs

Recommend getting this as well to make sure you understand the camera

There are cameras for above the £350 with more pixels and added features but this will do me as a great upgrade from my 'point n shoot' camera.

The quality of the camera build is excellent. Mine is charging at the moment so I can't say anything about how easy it is to use so far but a great deal i think

So D-SLR's are only for professionals or those with aspirations of becoming professional ???

What a load of twaddle. !!

Damn. Only available in Corby. :(
#12
shame i can't get hold of one at this price anywhere near me!
#13
I also have one of these and love it. With a 50mm prime, the images you can produce are stunning. Got a couple of sigma lenses too. Get one if you're thinking of going slr. The difference between this and my old olympus compact left me in shock.

So what you are saying is that Sony cannot be taken seriously in the DSLR Market?! Main reason Sony have had good prices is they took over Minoltas operations and had to then establish themselves within the DSLR field, this they have done very well and the cameras from professional reviews certainly hold their own amongst the likes of Nikon and Canon.

UPDATE!!!!

Just been back to the store in corby to see if they had any bags for this camera (didnt have time earlier) and they had a genuine Sony Camcorder starter kit that includes the same battery that the a230, a380, a390 uses and some others. The Sony bag included is very nice and fits the a230 like a glove.

Camera bag with genuine battery is £11.99

You dont get my point

SONY A230 - Good starter camera
NIKON / CANON - For more experienced users

Not really - The Sony/Minolta system is easily comparable with Nikon and Canon at the high end and the entry level Sonys like the A230 tend to have more kit on them for the price than entry level Canons and Nikons due to the need to overcome brand snobbery - in body stablilisation for example which has been historically lacking on lower end Nikons leaving you needing to buy pricier IS lenses.

Presumably someone should tell the guys with 2k Sony A900 full frames and Zeiss lenses that Sony's are for less experienced users.

Hot deal - nice entry DSLR
#24
Unless one is seriously going to be buying lenses towards the amount of at least a few thousand pounds, the argument of which camera is better will be void.

This is perfectly good value. Even the high end Sony DSLR's can stand its ground.

Oh and another thing, Sony make some of the sensors on Nikon's DSLRs. :)

- From a Pentax user.

As promised earlier here is the Sony bag that comes with the genuine spare Sony battery for just £11.99 at the same Corby store. The bag fits the a230 perfectly and I know it isn't a molded slr case but it will do me :)

Still talking twaddle, I own a Nikon D2X and have spent a small fortune on top end lenses, that does not detract that this is a good bargain, or for that matter its a really good camera.

No, you don't get the point, both Nikon and Canon do "starter cameras" within their DSLR range, when I chose a "starter" DSLR camera I could have had either the Sony A200 or the Nikon D40..the Sony was leagues ahead for the price, with a motorised body focus motor, and a better CCD (and Sony CCDs are in Nikon cameras)

So how on earth can you say that Nikon/Canon are for more experienced users? Wouldn't have mattered if I would have chosen a starter camera from any of the manufacturers, all DSLR have manual settings.

The current top of the range Sony A900 has a £1999 RRP, would you consider that to be for starter users?!

+1 - Any SLR company, whether Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax or Olympus have a wide range of cameras aimed at different people. Canikon don't make SLR's just for Pros, like Sony don't make SLR's just for non-pro. Go buy yourself a Sony A900, try out the market leading resolution and then come back and tell me Sony don't make pro cameras!

enough of the rant....£189 is a great price! good find!

Great deal. Wish i lived near a store :(
#32
The lack of live view is not a down side in my opinion. I have it on my camera and I never use it. Have you ever tried autofocusing when in live view? It takes FOREVER, which is useless when you need to take a photo quickly or use servo AF like in sports photography.
#33
someone check if stanleys got any and report back

Damn this is good, I've been looking for a digital SLR for a while and this is the best price to crop up so far. Its not online though :(

All I know is the store was open until 8pm last night but I think it shuts at 5pm Saturdays and 4pm Sundays but I may be wrong. Here is the store number but you may have to wait for a while for an answer

I've had an A100 (the grandfather of the A2xx range, and no live preview) for a few years now, and it works brilliantly. This is a bargain price and unless you plan to print out large format, then even my A100 does a fine job upto A3 print size. For £189.99 (plus the case and battery @ £11.99 as OP mentioned), I'd snap their hands off. Cant beat this price for value compared to features/ quality. A half decent point and shoot can cost this price. If you have a spare £600 though, go for the A55 + 18-55 kit at Jessops at a bargain price. Thats got 16 megapixel, 10 frames per second, live tilting screen view, takes full HD movies and gives the Canikon crowd a real slap in the face for features/ value. Samll body too. Even this is still considered a 'starter' camera too because of how it works but with better specs/ features than a lot of pro ranges - or go for the Sony A7xx - A9xx range for 'pro' features.
