Going price elsewhere seems to be over £500, even on amazon it is £520. This was in the Colliers Wood store and its not online so I guess its an instore deal only.

I know this may not be for everybody, since sony dslrs aren't that popular. But what its designed to do it does really well, and thats taking photos. not videos.
has the fastest autofocus with live view since it uses a secondary sensor to display the live view meaning the mirror can stay down you can maintain the fast auto focus speeds.

It's got some pretty good reviews from what I've read as well

Great price. Perfect for someone who is taking the first step to a DSLR. However, be warned. DSLR's are all about the lenses. Sony have some lenses available but its harder to find them than the established players like Canon/Nikon.

I have the old A300 and starting to wish I'd spent a bit more and bought a Canon instead.

Don't get me wrong, its a good camera and if all you want is to take photos with the kit lens and/or a zoom lens then this baby will do you well.

Look on "a well known auction site" and you'll pick up decent quality Konica Minolta lens for considerably less which will fit and generally fully function on the Sony range (check compatability though as some features might not work). You could even use an M42 lens adapter and pick up a decent range of lens for that too with some loss of functionality. You are right about the cost compared to Canon/ Nikon lens but thats about supply and demand and will fall as they become more popular. Sony are relative newcomers to the market so will take time to drop in price. Try Tamron or Sigma branded lens which fit the Sony mount and you'll find they could be better value. I think the Sony have some great features that the other manufacturers dont have though like on camera image stabilization. They also have their unfortunate quirks like the hot shoe connection incompatibility. All in all though a decent range of cameras.

They're not really newcomers - they bought out KM and they ought to have inherited a loyal band of followers from them. Sony's approach in other markets makes me think it's less about supply and demand, and more that they're profiteering bastards. The price won't ever fall and the hot shoe is not 'unfortunate', it's the kind of deliberate trick they pull in every single market. I'm surprised they've even caved and added SD slots.

Also the in-body stabilisation simply doesn't work quite as well as in-lens systems. And arguments about price fall down when Sony charge as much for non-stabilised lenses as the big two do for stabilised ones.

Hot deal though. :)

quidco code doesn't seem to work either.

any ideas?

I've been tempted to buy this camera and with the additional 5% off it might just tip me into buying it!

What would be the better deal do you think, this or an A330 with twin lens (18-55 & 75-300) & external flash for £489 & postage or an A230 with the same for £429 plus postage (on ebay buy-it-now)?
Thanks all.
#16
Damn. Was just about to buy this, then I found out it can't record video..yet it has an HDMI port.
#17
The hdmi port is for displaying your pictures on a TV.

Decent enough deal and a decent enough camera with the best live view system on the market.

I shoot with nikon and my friend has a sony 550 which he got some great pictures at a football match recently with the aid of live view as it tracked and focused well @ 4fps.

A couple of questions for those that have commented

1.What range do you need to cover that isn't available in either sony, sigma, tamron or km

2.Lens price for a500 approx: 70-300 ~ sony £175,tamron £100 (ish),sigma £150 stabilised by the sony's in camera s.s.s..The cost for the equivalent nikon stabilised lens is approx £400 with canon a similar price.

3.Why on earth would you want to shoot video on a dslr?....(a) its pants and (b) you look a bit of a pilloch doing so:)
Video cameras are fine but they just dont capture the moment like a dslr.

I'm afraid if you cant take a picture with £300 sony in your hands you still wont be able to do so with a £2k nikon/canon either.
There is far to much brand snobbery with dslr owners mainly by those who have spent a fortune on canon/nikon and feel the need to justify the money they've spent on kit by trying to convert the world and his dog to their chosen brand by endlessly waffling on about how good it is.....baaa!baaa!baaa!.
All dslr's are capable of producing excellent results if you take the time to learn about them and swich from auto.

Okay, so because you can get good pictures with entry-level cameras, £6k full-frame pro bodies and the lenses that are used with them are basically the same? ...Good.

I haven't spent a lot, and I don't care what you shoot with. I slightly resent Sony's obsession with pushing their proprietary formats in every single market sector they enter, because it's a childish anti-consumer money-grabbing tactic.

Off topic, but does anyone know where is the best price for a Canon 550d with 18-55mm lens?

Thanks. Good site, but it leaves off Amazon, which is currently the cheapest for the Canon 550D.

Don't think Amazon always source UK stock, which is all they list on Camerapricebuster.

Are you serious? I didn't know that! I thought Amazon could be trusted to sell only UK stock! I definitely don't want to be buying a grey import which is not covered by UK warranty.

Not certain, but I don't know why else they wouldn't be included on Camerapricebuster. I think the majority of their stock is UK-sourced, probably when they think it will make a difference to the warranty, but I had gathered that they're not consistent. Anyone know for sure?

Sony have not pushed any format into the DSLR sector, all the mounts and hotshoes used to be minolta's from when sony bought them out.
