With RS sounds price promise they will beat the Amazon one by £10, so hot in a weird sort of way. I got them to knock £40 off an amp recently and they did it with a smile

price needs to include next day delivery for amazon which would make it more expensive than RS so no point in price match.

pricelesselectronics has 139.99 but never used em

Not voting hot or cold here, and I am no fanboy for either the PS3 or XboX360 console, but why would anyone buy a blue-ray player for £160, when they can buy a ps3 for very little more (eg. £225 for the 40gb version).

I personally don't have a PS3, but if i wanted a blue-ray player the PS3 route would be my first consideration.
I couldn't justify paying £160 for a player alone - to be perfectly honest I am more than happy with standard definition DVD's and have built up quite a collection over the years. I think it'll be some years yet before I make a conscious switch over to blu-ray.

£171 Asda Instore with Mamma Mia, Wall-E and Hancock in the box seems like a better deal.

Agree with you there,it will be awhile before i go over to blu-ray,when films are down to a fiver i will but i cant see myself thinking i should re buy 40 Year Old Virgin, what would be the point, its not like there's action in it or explosions galore, stuff like Die Hard and The Matrix i will eventually but Me,Myself and Irene on blu-ray,seems abit pointless.
This player has loads of great reviews on Amazon so it must be pretty decent, not voting either way tho

Prices are getting better but personally still need them to hit the £100 mark before I would buy a dedicated blu-ray player.

PS3s are fine if you would use one for functions other than playing blurays otherwise you are playing over the odds for things you don't need.............

The same people who only want to watch Movies and not play games. Why would they pay an extra £65 for something they won't use? Plus I hear the PS3 is noisy. The DBP-350S is near silent.
#9
Look it doesn't matter whether it's Amazon or Richer Sounds. The point is I paid £200 a few months ago for one of these and they are excellent. If it's £159 snap it up now. Or wait for the sales.

Erm It's the same player as in this deal :whistling:
Sony DBP-350S.

is the ps3 as good as this for playing films/decoding/upscaling/whatever the heck else it does or is it kind of a lower standard for pure films?
#14
The PS3 is still one of the best BD players around. That said, if you are going to use it purely for BD playback and not for gaming, you will probably want to buy the standard remote control (£10+) instead of using a joypad.

The basic fact is IF you just want to play movies, this S350 is a great player and bundled with a few movies too this is a great price.

Keep in mind that for a few bob more Richer Sounds will do the 350 with multi-region on the DVD part, which is pretty good if you've got a load fo R1 discs (as I do) and don't want to have two players in your AV rack.

since realised if you have a bit of know how you can region free the dvd bit yourself

Just adding this to the thread....

This is a great Blu Ray player, a friend of mine recently bought Hell Boy 2 on Blu ray and tried to play it in his combi drive but it wouldn't play past the menu, he gave it to his mate to try on his PS3 and the disc just kept spinning and would give no picture, however upon trying the disc on this player it played first time perfectly.
#17
This is a good player and better than using a PS3 to watch blu-rays (uses too much power and the fans are too loud for movie watching). It has been this price for months though (I got mine from amazon for £129) so voted cold.
#18
The 2 free Blu Rays you get are Batman Begins and Casino Royale.

These are sent to you when you register the Blu ray player ;)
#19
Can get the samsung cheaper http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/-/836/1052/-/3468512/Samsung-BD-P1400-Blu-ray-High-Definition-Player/Product.html?searchtype=genre

The good thing about the PS3 is it much easier to upgrade as long as you have wifi. Blu ray players will need to have firmware updated regularly as the start to take advantage of newer features.
I find the PS3 makes a bit of noise when playing games but I didn't notice any noise watching blu ray movies, which I did yesterday watching Batman begins and the dark knight.
#20
do you think ill be able to find a branded blu-ray for £100 or less in the sales..?
#21
I think you'll be able to find one at £99.99 after xmas if you look hard enough
#22

Got my 350 about a week ago from Amazon for £150 with Mamma Mia, Hancock and Wall E, as well as Casino Royale and Batman Begins through a mail in, and Spiderman 3 on the way with a LoveFilm offer included on the included disc.
#24
£160.85 at Amazon currently , add the 3 movie bundle of Mamma Mia, Wall-E and Hancock at the time of purchase to get them free.

ASIN: B001LF3T74 ... offer good from 24th Nov "whilst stocks last"

Assume you also still get Casino Royale and Batman Begins when you register the player with Sony too ?
#25
Got mine from Amazon for £167.95 with free next day delivery using Prime with the following blu ray movies :

Close Encounters of the third kind
Men in Black
Hellboy
Wall-E
Mamma Mia
Hancock
Casino Royale
Batman Begins

Well worth it as if you think each movie costs around £12 this makes the player £71 ish !
#26
It's only £225.09 at Currys !
#27
Do you need a coupon or do you just ring HyperFi.

The website isn't very good.

Hey what Lovefilm offer was with the disc, what disk was is, was it the disc that came with the player?
#29
Fairly good deal this one and a good player :)

But where do you folks get that the PS3 has loud fans, I can't hear mine at normal TV volume?!

Plus these players can be made to have the Blu-Ray region switch via a hardware modification....back to the good old days of hardware region free DVD players :)

the lovefilm offer is the free movie rental for 1yr. presume its 1 disc at a time tho, unlikely 3 discs at a time.

aesthetics - bit ugly
may need a remote (so more cost unless you have a smart remote)
cant use all in one/smart remotes with the ps3 as it uses bluetooth for its remote (though you could buy 3rd party devices to resolve this
ps3 uses alot more power than a standalone (170w)
ps3 is noisier
i dont think the ps3 can send true hd as bitstream for an external to decode but it can send the true hd sound via lpcm (which some regard as inferior to bitstream)
#32
Voted hot.

Bought one of these a month or two back. Picture quality is amazing, and it upscales standard DVDs brilliantly, too.

I already have an Xbox 360, so it seemed daft for me to fork out £200+ for a PS3 when all I really wanted was Blu ray playback.

It was the disc that came with the player, it had some form of special offers link on the disc.

Sorry but you dont know what you are talking about. Profile 2 is final spec for blu-ray players so no more updates will be required for any new features. I have both PS3 and S350 and the S350 is easier to update the firmware and a heck of a lot faster too.

Follow this link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-BDPS350-Blu-ray-Player-1080p/dp/B001DN1SP4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1230040227&sr=8-1

Click on the button under Product Promotions heading to get Wall-E, Mamma Mia and Hancock for free then a go back to the original page loaded and click on the link under the Sony Promotions heading and choose 3 blu rays to get 3 for 2 and £15 off the player as well. Bit long winded but it works. When you get the player register it using the CD supplied in the box and you will get Casino Royale and Batman begins as well.

Just noticed the player has gone up about £6 since I bought it so it should work out about £174 now

IIRC in the settings, you can output bitstream.

Firstly, that's £65 more. And you get 2 free BRs when you register the S350.
The PS3 is ugly (in my personal opinion) and doesn't match the rest of my AV equipment (looks like a toy and isn't full-width)
I can't use the PS3 with my Logitech Harmony remote
It doesn't bitstream HD audio formats last time I researched it
I can't play multi-region DVDs (my S350 is region-free hacked)
Video and audio performance is now better on a standalone deck than the PS3, even if only by a little

Add all of that to the fact I don't play games and have no need for a media streamer, that's plenty reason enough. Sony market standalone decks and don't just try to sell the PS3 to everyone for a reason. People have different wants and needs and it's a bit closed-minded of people to think that everyone should want the same thing just because it suits them.

You heard wrong about the PS3 noise. Mine is playing Hellboy II and I have to put my ear right up next to it to hear the fan. I think you'll find whomever it was, was talking about the Xbox 360. That's quite the noisy console.

Got one of these 8 weeks ago for £129 delivered from Laskys ...... excellent deal at the time.
