First ever deal ......

Quick heads-up about a bit of a deal on this player at Amazon.

Amazon have a promo with Sony whereby if you purchase 3 blurays at the same time as the BDP-S350, you get £15 off your order.

However, some of these titles are also on Amazon's "3 for 2" bluray deal.

So .... if you buy the player (£163.25) and 3 blurays from the selection at Amazon (see link) which are also on their 3-for-2 offer, for example:
- Rambo
- Close Encounters
- Spiderman 3

then you'll get £15 off your order, plus the cheapest bluray free.

The upshot is, after choosing free delivery, and applying the "LOWERVAT" code to get 2.5% off, I've ordered the player plus 3 blurays (plus the 2 free Sony ones - Casino Royal & Batman Begins?) for £175.73

Worth considering if you're not that keen on the free discs in the Blockbuster deal.

Click on "Go to deal" link which goes to the product page for the BDPS350 - the link to the bluray deal is listed near the top under "Sony Special Offers"

looks like a good deal

This looks a good deal. I'm a little confused by your post though. You seem to say you get 5 Blu-Rays for the money, the 3 for 2 and 2 further free Sony ones?

Is that correct and if so where does it state the other 2?

Also, at what stage in the checkout does the discount get applied. Even up to putting the payment information in, only the lower vat is applied to mine.

Thanks

This shouldn't be posted...its the deal that MidlandsComics put up...the other should just be amended

You need to check the blu rays are sony ones, not all in the 3 for 3 are. If you got to the page with the S350 there is a link to all of them.

The 2 other dvds you need to send off for. That promotion has been running for a while and is seperate to the rest of the deal.

Looks like a good deal to me btw! :-D

Sony have an offer whereby once you register your player online using the CD which comes in the box, they will send you 2 free discs.

To get this offer, you need to add the discs from the "Sony Special Offers" link. The final discount is shown at checkout just before placing your order. Remember that the 3 discs you choose need to also be on the 3-for-2 offer - not sure that all of them are.

When they say "between 15/09/08 and 15/01/08" I assume they mean "between 15/09/08 and 15/01/09"

Does a standalone Bluray have any advantages over a PS3's bluray capacity? Is a PS3 a 'fully-featured' bluray player?

I've been toying with idea of an XBOX360 or PS3 since it's a few years since I've played any games - also with idea of bluray - wondering if money for bluray player best put towards a PS3 (no obviously console-war fanboy comments please)?
#12
Can't get it below £184.71 here
#13

Been in the same situation mate and have just ordered the PS3 deal from Amazon instead.

I'm just a casual gamer really that has owned both PS2 and Xbox but both have been given away. Haven't gamed for months or even over a year but fancy Fallout 3 and a few others. Been thinking about it for weeks but worked it out and the PS3 makes most sense. I will buy the 360 at some stage too though.

As for Blu-ray. The PS3 players has had great reviews everywhere in it's own right. A few players are now starting to better it but it's still great quality and faster than most of the stand alone players. Easily updateable too.

I'm happy with my decision and I can look forward to The Dark Knight at Christmas:thumbsup:

ps3 disadvantages

1) Styling - doesn't fit the look of other equipment.
2) Bitstreaming of hi def soundtracks over hdmi
3) DTS-HD Master Audio support currently lacking / no true dts hd hd sound
4) Remote uses bluetooth so tricky to use other remotes with it i.e. learning remotes which use IR or RF.
5) No separate multi-channel surround sound outputs - useful for older AV receivers/amps especially those that can't handle LPCM over hdmi. Optical surround is an option of course providing you don't require PCM uncompressed or playback of the fully quality TrueHD soundtrack etc
6) Sometimes necessary to switch settings from bitstream to PCM and visa versa (uncompressed PCM soundtracks sent as bitstream are output as standard dolby digital for example) - An 'auto' setting would be nice.
7) wont play all blu ray discs..has to state ps3 compatiable...not sure how big a prob it is though
8) noisy fan
9) No display - though this could be an advantage!

ps3 advantages
1) games machine - no good for me as i already have several including an xbox360
2) media centre - no good for me as i already have an xbox360
3) not much more exp than a standalone player, though a standalone player+xbox360 isnt much more than a ps3

my decision was easier as i have an xbox360 already, ps3's ugly styling (not as bad as the lardarse xbox though lol), and i want my onkyo av amp to process the sound and audio thanks as it will do a far better job, plus i want 7:1 true hd sound....a minor thing is i want to control the player with my logitech harmony remote which i dont think will work with the ps3 as its remote uses bluetooth rather than infrared

Kinda

What actually happens is it comes with a CD. You pop that in your PC - webpage loads. Enter you personal details, and player serial number.
Few weeks later the Blu Ray disks arrive.

I've tried about five different ways now and still can't get one of the BD's free.

Lowest I can get is £186.71

Maybe they've cottoned on to it?
#19
The right price doesn't appear until you sign in and view your order at checkout.

Just ordered withHellboy, Dracula and Close Encounters for 172.23.

Thanks for posting the deal.
#20
Well I've done exactly that and I'm still not getting that price.
#21
Weird.....I started from scratch.

Ordered the player then when viewing the Blu-Ray disks, I put a tick in the small boxes instead of adding them individually.

Once I selected all three, I then clicked "add to basket"

It seemed to work that way.

Cheers !
#22
Tried that , still won't go to the posted price
#23
Is it true that the BDPS350 plays dvds from other regions too?
I read that on a few sites.
Would be a nice plus as we have tons of R1 dvds
#24
Nevermind. Found some info on how to make it regionfree for standard dvds...
NICE. Will order this one.

i had a lot of problems yesterday with amazon promo codes not working / bundle offers not working. I was trying to order the ps3 movie pack deal with free game/ remote/ lead and extra game for a tenner plus use the lower vat promo code.

Anyhow, no matter how i did it and even from two seperate internet connections it wouldnt work. In the end i just ordered it at the wrong price, emailed amazon with my maths on the overcharge and they just refunded me the difference.

BTW, Just tried adding this deal to my basket and once logged in at checkout after lower vat code, it still says £204.21!

ps3 has supported 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and TrueHD for a while now
ps3 plays all blu-ray discs infact the ps3 is probably the most future proof blu-ray on the market
One of the best upconverting dvd player
the fan for the 80gb is almost inaudible when playing blu-rays
Small point but has wifi for cordless firmware updates (saves you from having to burn an update disk/usb or running a network cable to the player)
good or bad, firmware updates will come regularly and be supported longer by sony than any other existing sony blu-ray player
you can buy an infra red remote dongle which works with your harmony but wifi remote is great sometimes because you don't need line of sight
the ps3 also boots up a blu-ray movie faster than practically any other blu-ray player
you can sample (download downscaled blu-ray trailers) before you buy them on the ps3

anyway, i understand a ps3 isn't for you because you already own an xbox.

most reviews cosider the ps3 a higher fidelity blu-ray player than the bdps350. here is one of them:

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/moneymag/0811/gallery.blueray_players.moneymag/

but like you said the main dealbreaker for the ps3 for some people with older sound systems is the Bitstreaming of hi def soundtracks over hdmi but also bear in mind that the bdps350 only has 2-channel analog outputs (BDP-S300 has 6).

here is a list of good and bad for this Sony BDPS350 player:

- Pretty fast, took 6 seconds to eject when off and only took 23 seconds of "loading" after inserting a disc. 29 seconds to play a disc. I think the ps3 is faster.
- 24p light is a nice touch, but a little annoying because it's so blue.
- HDMI-CEC worked great even with a non Sony TV.
- Good looking with a remote that is better than last year's.
- Coax and optical digital out are nice for those who haven't moved on to HDMI audio.
- Network connection for BD Live (via future update) and firmware updates.
- Power cord isn't permanently attached, a nice touch for custom installers.
- Very nice on screen display, including scrub bar.
- AV sync and other options accessible while disc is playing.
- Bitstreams all codecs.
- Internally decodes TrueHD and DD+.
- No problems playing any disc I tried.

The Bad of Sony BDP-S350 :
- No internal decoding of DTS-HD HR or MA.
- Both TrueHD and DD+ get down mixed via TOSLINK to DD, not DTS as some players do.
- Recessed USB port.
- No back-light on remote.
- Failed upconversion and de-interlacing HQV tests.
- No RS-232 for home automation.
- Only 2-channel analog outputs (BDP-S300 has 6).
- No BD-Live until firmware update.

disclaimer: take the above +/- points with a pinch of salt since some of the info comes from the net and hasn't been verified fully by myself

It seems to have been previously listed at the lower price here with the offer 2x Blu Rays 3x DVDs : http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/284516/sony-bdps350-blu-ray-player-2x-blu-/ >

Oh I see :)
Hadn´t even seen that one.
People posted more replies on this one here. Guess because it is listed with 5 blurays,
the other deal is with 3 dvd´s and 2 blurays.
