Not too bad a deal even though i do own both a Hd-dvd and Bluray player already i dont get all the Bluray has won format war rubbish that keeps getting chanted by people just because Warner Bros are being paid off to go just Bluray as likes of Hd-dvd have big films such as Transformers and Bourne series from Paramount and Universal which don't get release on likes of Bluray :whistling:

Congrats on your 100th post.

I like the "Warner bros. is being paid off" If you think.. if they are being paid off you must realise that HD-DVD musn't really care otherwise they would be offering more money than Blu-Ray!

Money first then customers!

the end of the war is in sight but i dont think its over just yet

hd dvd might pull something out the bag

why did the most expensive format have to do better?

If playstation can pull of another £20-£30 price drop then they're sorted.

Even buying an XBOX Arcade + the HD-DVD Drive will cost more then a playstation if they drop it buy a few more quid.

Cheap is not always better, otherwise the Lada car company would be making more money than the likes of BMW.

PS3 also has wi-fi and bluetooth and a 40GB HD as standard, don't forget to add that in you price comparison + free Live.

a HD film is HD whatever diskc its played on, when HD DVDs are a dime a dozen ill proba buy loads

the beginning of the end is near but itll be at least 2009 before we start to see the "victory" take effect esp given how few consumers are actually buying HD Discs

Live is better looking. however PSN still does the exact same thing..

I bought my HD dvd player from the states so are all my hd dvd discs, if you ask me , i ll choose hd dvd a million times over blu-waves or what ever, The fact that it is multi-region is enough deciding factor for Me to pitch my camp with HD DVD. let wait and see How this goes really.

I would 100% agree with you that the PSN live is nowhere as good as the Xbox live service, however it is FREE, however playing live has no interest for me.
#13
PSN is loads better than LIVE IMO, for one its free!!! If you dont play every day online its a no-brainer.
#14
what discs do you get ?

Why must these threads always turn into some fanboy fest. Off course WB are paying paid off, you think they'd go for free? I'm sure Paramount went for free.....

And Live is better than PSN, but PSN is free, so you can't really compare something that's free to something tha costs.
#18
This is £30 cheaper elsewhere. Check kelkoo.

Nobody said it's the best blu ray player, but it's better than nothing....

It's not as bad as the original PS2 dvd player was! Oh my god that was terrible....

Good deal and with the Warner/New Line announcement that they're dropping HD DVD it's the perfect time to go Blu :)

HD DVD is dead man walking.. Warner have chosen a side purely to end the HD war swiftly. Both HD DVD and Blu Ray offered Warner millions of dollars to go exclusive, what actually happened is they chose the format that is selling the most. Blu Ray is consistently selling 2:1 over HD, Universal can release on Blu Ray at anytime as their deal isn't exclusive.. anyone thinking that Dreamworks and Paramount haven't got a get out clause is very niave.

How long before MS announce a Blu Ray drive for the 360?

Is anyone using their ps3 to play blu ray movies? I'm hearing that they won't play all of them, I'd rather buy a ps3 for close to this cost. For the amount of tmes I actually watch dvd's it would make more sense IF it plays them ok.

New Line confirms it'll follow in Warner's Blu footsteps

I have quite a few blu rays and never had a problem with them on the PS3. I have american and british Blu and all of em work as they should

I'm gonna get the 360 HD-DVD add on soon too

10 blu-rays movies and all play fine on ps3 and look superb. Proper SONY bluetooth remote is worth getting for £14.99 (not the cheap ones for a tenner). Never heard of problems before. Maybe it was a 360 fanboy site that you heard this on ;)

"Buy before April 30th 2008 and you'll be able to claim the Spiderman Trilogy box set and all three Pirates of the Caribbean films on Blu-Ray for free! To claim your discs and start your Blu-Ray collection simply register your player with Sony using the disc included, when it arrives."

looks like the free discs dont come with the unit, so i would imagine it doesnt really matter where you get it from...

No, just something I heard, after hardy looking I found this.

I could post more but you get the idea. Now if it all settles and the ps3 drops a little more in price then that will be my dvd player.

I personally have found the whole Blu Ray/HD war an utter joke. How can you have two different formats other than SDVD?

I feel sorry for everyone that has invested their hard earned cash in HD hardware (especially Xbox 360 owners) and HD dvd's
#30
Although the ps3 as a blu ray player gets a decent review here

I only read the first two links (the third didn't work) but that just seemed like a problem with firmware 1.5

I think it's on 2.1 now and it's fine.

some of the articles posted seem recent but they are actually quite old since they refer to firmware 1.5. For your info the sony ps3 is on firmware 2.1. 1.5 firmware is over four months old. PS3 firmware 2.1 is certified blu-ray 1.1 compliant which is the latest and most up to date iteration of blu-ray - not many blu-ray players are 1.1 compliant. if you look at the ps3 forums you won't see anyone complaining about blu-ray playback (unless their ps3 is defective) and there are 9 million ps3 players out there so i think the stories are either out of date or just sensationalist reporting.

That was just a problem with a software update that was release at the end of 2006..............

No problems at all with the player.
#37
I've bought about 5 Blu-Ray DVD's for my PS3, all work fine. Ask around AV forums - PS3 is one of the best blu-ray players on the market. Note: Not the best, ONE of the best... And they're updating to to the new profile soon too :)
#38
I can confirm no problems with PS3 playing Blu-rays with the latest firmware and also the upscalling of SD DVDs is very good.

Image quality is very good the main thing you gain with the standalone player is analogue 5.1 out, the PS3 does do uncompressed 5.1/7.1 over HDMI and Dolby Digital or DTS from the optical out.
#39
Doesn't the ps3 generally play blu-rays a lot faster than standalone blu-ray players, i.e. start up time? I mean the cpu power of teh ps3 is massive compared to most blu-ray players. It has seven 3.2ghz cpus so surely it will be able to cope with any new standards. Its a phenomenal powerhouse of a console at least in main cpu terms.
#40
sony sure are trying to kill hd dvd by spending big. Anyone buying this player imo should research it properly. With the bluray spec *still* evolving, and this player being 1.0 and nonupgradable you'll miss out on all the 1.1 interactive features and possibly other features. Also its jsut absurd that no blueray players wil ldecode HD audio.. just completely shocking.
