Which is better this Sony or the Panasonic TH42PX80B?

75% of use will be for Virgin Media (SD) - 5% regular DVD viewing and 20% Xbox 360 via component .........

2 inches extra for £50 vs 2 inches less a £50 saving but being 1080p ......... decisions, decisions!

Help, please :santa:

I would go for the Panasonic, based on the fact this model although is 1080p it doen't even come close to matching my 40V3000 which is also 1080p in blu ray viewing. The Panasonic can handle SD brilliantly and Freeview on the Sony is terrible.

You say that, but the D3500 is quite an old model now. However the new W4000 series does have USB ports. Also, not to be pedantic but this TV is not 'futureproof', and neither is any piece of technlolgy. You seem like one of the infamous "1080p" crowd.

Yep 1080p is not future proof, 35mm film has up to 4 times more detail than 1080p so there will be some new players out in the next few years to get people to spend more cash.
