So this is a great TV I hear, and the highlight of my this year's purchase so far. 100Hz!!! Full HD, USB and 5 year warranty! Got to be worth it

I am not going to copy and paste the details, for details you can click on the link.

Buy from John Lewis because I know it is easier to have the problem fixed rather than to go through Sony.

I went to buy one last week and I found that they are price matching any online retailer with a high street store. I googled and found PRC-Direct selling like for like (they have Sony 5-year warranty) for £549

http://www.prcdirect.co.uk/televisions/lcd-televisions/40-inch-lcd-televisions/kdl40ex503u/product

JL rung back and have honoured it a few days later.

PS you can price match either in store or online, but if you price match in store you cannot use the online form.

http://www.johnlewis.com/help/nkupricematchform.aspx

I have searched through everything and could not find anything cheaper at this present time with the warranty, so I think this is a very good value ...

Amazon for £550.25 with 1 year warranty!

Can I go instore and get them to match the price on a website or does it have to be a local store ?

Richer Sounds are doing this tv for £549, but u have to pay 10% of the cost to get a 5 year guarantee, making it £605. If JL were to price match the £549 (without extended warranty) would they take away the 5yr one that comes as standard with all their sets making it like for like ?

Basically they compare the value of what you have purchased (eg a 40 TV and 5 year guarantee) against other retailers's offer (hence 40 TV + cost of their 5 year guarantee) to make up the price

Right so I'm assuming then they would match the price (£549) but I wouldn't get the 5 year cover ?
If that's the case can I go instore and get them to match PRC Directs online price of £549 or do I have to shop online with John Lewis to match another online price lol ?
#9
@Arise, No no, you get the 5 year cover regardless online and instore!

Basically If you can match like for like from JL then they will honour the price, so at this instance £549.00

The problem that I see is that PRC has the following on its page for this TV :
' 4 Years Extended Warranty - £151.00
5 Years Extended Warranty - £207.00'
so cost would be £549 + £151.00 = £650, if you added an extra 4 years. This is the retailers warranty cost, rather than Sonys free warranty: I'm just guessing that JL could be pedantic and say that like for like would be the inclusion of the retailer's warranty, rather than the manufacturer's warranty.

They match with Sony 5 year warranty. Also I have successfully claim the price match.

Good luck with trying to price match for delivery. I tried to get JL to price match on a smaller version of this model a few weeks ago. Here's the response:

Dear XXX,

Thank you for your enquiry.

In order to apply a price reduction on a purchase, the criteria in our pricing policy must be met. I regret that after review, the request you have submitted does not match all or parts of this policy.

This product is only available to PRC in-store customers. This deal is offered on a materially different basis to our own, making customers travel to the PRC shop at cost to pick up the goods, and pay for the television in person (the customer can only obtain the goods at a lower price if they agree to drive to the PRC showroom).

I am sorry that I have not been able to reduce the price on this occasion. If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

XXX

I guess you may be able to do an in store one.

Very good price for this TV with a 5 year guarantee. I bought it for 529 a week ago without one.
It's a great TV by the way. The Internet access is a bit useless if you have a PC (which you would if you have your own internet) as it only allows you to watch youtube etc on the TV and it takes ages to type in searches without a keyboard.
On the John Lewis price match I think it's a load of rubbish these days there policy has got a lot stricter in that the matching place must also have a 5 year guarantee and free delivery, the service has to be identical or they wont do it. Big con if you ask me and the more its publicised the more likely they are revert to their good policy.

Cheers mate. I was gonna buy this set from Richer Sounds in Newcastle next week but I didnt know whether to pay for the 5 year extended guarantee.
If I go into John Lewis hopefully they'll price match Richer Sounds price of £549.

everytime this turns up it reminds me of the 46" version for £499 deal I missed out on :(

I think if you visited John Lewis, local to Ilford, then you may be in with a chance of getting the match. As it stands, and as PRC explicitly state on the product page, this TV is available at this price in their Ilford store only, and not online. Ad per my post above, PRC's extended warranty is not free, and John Lewis may also state that the store warranty is the only warranty that is a match to their own, and not the Sony warranty: and PRC charge a high fee for their warranty: I've added the costs above.

Two weeks ago M&S had a £559 deal on the Panasonic Viera TX-P42G20 inc 5 year warranty. Much more desirable than the EX503. It's successor, the G30 will be in the shops soon, so there may be a possibility of grabbing the remaining G20 stock at a bargain price. Your choice.
#22
Not more desirable - P42G20 is a plasma isn't it? I'm not in the market for something heavy that consumes two or three times more power!
#23
I bought this TV from JL 3 weeks ago (Bluewater). Gave them a call and said they would only honor it if the shop was 8 miles from their store. Sadly PRC is around 20 miles away so no price match for me!

I disagree, searching is easy for anyone who's ever sent a text message using a normal phone keypad, and having stuff like iPlayer and Demand5 is very nice. The interfaces are pretty decent and although they're not in HD, picture quality is still good and it's quick to load.
#25
Just to point out this is a fantastic TV, but anyone gaming on this online will suffer it has Input Lag of 60ms!! thats massive for an LCD, basically you could move the left stick full left or right before the on-screen movement will happen.

Are you sure you weren't thinking of this deal for an EX403? http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sony-bravia-kdl46ex403u-46-inch-widescreen-full-hd-1080p-bravia-engine-3-lcd-int/864062

The G20 has power management that reduces consumption to less than 50% more than an LCD. The G20 is the benchmark against which other TVs are compared. The EX503 falls well short of the G20 standard.

See reviews at http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Panasonic-TX-P42G20-Plasma-HDTV-Review.html & http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-txp42g20-txp42g20b-20100308169.htm

I would have one myself, however, the demise of my gas boiler forced a reduction in budget for a new TV, so I now have a £400 LCD.

As you say iPlayer and Demand5 are very easy to use and although not HD still quite watchable, but, I agree with El Siccse about the interface; it could be the EX403 is different in this respect; but although you can use the remote a little like a phone keypad it's not as good by a long way as any phone I've ever owned - certainly not easy!

Aren't the majority of LCD tv's abover 32" pretty much the same though mate ?

There's quite a few 40" LCDs with 30ms lag or better.

That's not my experience. Blu Ray player bricked by firmware update after 13 months - Sony not interested. If you research you discover that there is no factory reset function or board protection built into the Sony - unlike its competitors. Not the first time for me that design cost cutting have caused terminal failure of a Sony device. Make sure you get the five year guarantee. I won't be buying Sony again.

Have you actually experienced one though? People said the same about the 403 that I recently bought, but in reality there's no noticeable lag whatsoever. It's scaremongering based on specs rather than actual experience.

Don't be fooled. Jl price match on tv is a scam. They refused same thing with Panasonic p42g20. I decided to take my business else where and went to m & s. Ps doesn't seem good price re what I got mine at.

Ditto what dooper says in reply to guy with so far out dated knowledge. Far far superior and for football and gaming plasma is the only way.
#39
Sony KDL40EX503 is just £559.99 at the coop.

This might be easier for some people to price match.
