hmmm .. alba Bravia - I dont think so :whistling:

I'm no snob but I wouldn't be seen dead with a Alba badged appliance in my front room :-D

Dont forget about the numerous reports of backlight bleed problems on this model. Seems to be specific to the 40" version as it uses a different panel to the 37".

If these problems are likely to affect your viewing pleasure, you may want to read up on them before buying.

Good price though!!

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Sony-KDL40W5500/

Pros

Blacks among the deepest on a non-LED-backlit LCD TV

Very good standard-definition upscaling

Highly competent SD film mode deinterlacing

White balance and gamma controls available in user menu

Motionflow 100Hz reduces motion blur without significant artefacts

No undefeatable edge enhancement on 1080i/1080p

Relatively wide viewing angles (for an LCD TV)

Applicast, USB playback and DLNA streaming functionalities
Cons

Mediocre SD video mode deinterlacing (limited jaggies reduction)

Slight red push (colour decoding error)

Input lag may affect sensitive gamers

Mild clouding and LCD backlight bleed (negligible once calibrated) (check settings page in the link above)

RSS widget very fussy about feed format and character encoding
Summary
Besides offering media streaming (DLNA) and internet connectivity (Applicast), the Sony KDL40W5500 LCD television successfully addresses the few gripes we had with its predecessor the W4500 series:

White balance and gamma controls have been reinstated to the user menu;

Undefeatable edge enhancement on 1080 content have been eradicated; and

Standard-def upscaling and film mode deinterlacing have been improved.
Even though the LCD TV's video-based deinterlacing continues to disappoint, and its primary chromaticities have been compromised slightly by a downgrade in backlight unit, the Sony KDL40W5500 still delivers one of the best picture qualities we have seen this year, due to its superb black-level response, razor-sharp fine detail presentation, and mature 100Hz motion technology.

While I wouldn't touch a Sony again, as they are overpriced, unreliable & unrepairable at reasonable cost; if you think there is nothing to choose between an Alba & a Sony tv, then just buy a radio & a white stick, as the screen isn't going to be much use to you at all! :whistling:

I would also have the Sony over the Alba any day, but, you do sound a little bit snobby. Maybe this is because you talk about 'badged' rather than the general gulf in tech quality between the two. If Alba started making better kit I would have no problem getting one, but Alba are a budget manufacturer and have always (as long as I can remeber at least) nocked out tons of cheep kit for years of questionable quality.

I'm being tempted, especially as an Argos card gives opportunity to pay nothing for 9 months,
but having read about freeview HD rolling out next year, this set does not state compatibility in any way
and I don't fancy buying an extra box in few months...

How much do you think the sony freeview HD tv will be compared to this price + freeview HD box ?

If you're willing to wait until freeview HD tv's come down in price that's fine but I guess that will be this time next year.

Doubt they would match this price, worth phoning them though.

How is this compare to SHARP LC42DH77E 42 inch 100Hz HD Ready 1080p LCD TV?

100 Hz, 42 inch Aquos HD Ready 1080p LCD TV with built-in digital tuner (DVB-T) and dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000:1. 100Hz Double frame drive. 4ms response time and 3x HDMI inputs. 10bit Signal processing for smoother colour gradients.

I think sharp is selling that on affinity program for £599 plus 5 years warranty.
#20
ooh - which reminds me, is the warranty/argos any good with this? whats argos aftersales like on products like this?
#21
Picked up the 37" in the Asda deal 2 weeks ago for £400 and great TV. I do have slight backlight bleeding on top right hand corner though so if this set is supposed to be worse then I would think again.

It comes with a manufacturer's 3 year guarantee.

Tweak the settings and it will be neglible, it's hardly going to be massively different to the 37" imo. According to hdtvtest the 40" has better overall picture quality and if back light bleed was a major problem I think they would have said so.

Comparing the 37" to 40"
"It’s not surprising to find that the overall picture quality of the Sony KDL37W5500 HDTV was very close to the KDL40W5500, though the difference in LCD panel types used may have contributed to a slightly lighter shade of black, and less compliant greyscale tracking"

I have just rung our local Sony store in Bath to get advice about this TV and he was adamant that it was a website mistake! He said that it is still a current best seller and they cant even buy it wholesale for less that £800! However he checked it out and said that we should get it from Argos before they realize the error and go back to them for the wall mount!
#25
this is going to get very hot!!

as fairycake15 mentioned, this is a main-stream lcd tv and argos must have surely made a mistake with their pricing. if u were looking to get one, reserve straight away and get to your nearest argos.

i'll probably be looking to get a further 8% off, 'cause i can buy discounted argos voucher through my company's employee benefits scheme - £552 for a 40" W5500 - WOW!!

:w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t:

Sony Centres sell for Sony's list price, that's all.
Never bought anything @Sony Centre as went around the corner to Currys or Richer and saw always better price there.

Am I missing something or has it expired? showing as £649.99

if anyone wants to try pricematching at John Lewis, bear in mind that JL carry a model different to this one only in the shape of its case, the KDL40W5710. The unit is exactly the same, the differences are cosmetic. However you need to get the JL salesperson to check that out - their tech department will confirm it - and I get the impression that JL sales partners are very inclined these days to drag their feet and look for any excuse to avoid pricematching... especially when it looks like the rival supplier has made a mistake - I suspect Argos meant to discount the V5500, not the W5500!

Currently the JL website lists this at £999 with £100 back for an old TV = £899! 50% more!

Of course John Lewis offer a free five year warranty, which is very tempting - but not to the tune of £300!

edit: JL Brent Cross says it'll take a few days... Argos are bound to have caught on by then...

You need to use code.

Cuurys have a price match plus 10% of the difference if it is readily available in a nearby Argos, so saving another potential £30
#31
JL: I doubt it since the model number is different (even though they are the same TV) and they would be looking to discount it by £300.

That's why Curry's and Comet have their own slightly different model numbers for some of the exact same product so they cannot be price matched against each other :whistling:
