Details

Ultra-slim, stylish and waterproof, with superb image quality the Sony TX5 is a high performance camera packed with advanced shooting features.

The Sony TX5 has a revolutionary Exmor R CMOS sensor that is capable of 10.2 megapixels which boosts sensitivity, producing detail-packed pictures where many cameras would struggle to produce crisp, clear images, such as in low light.

Even if you've left your camcorder behind, the Sony TX5 will let you capture crisp, clear HD movie clips at an incredible 30 frames per second for smooth, clear action.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama automatically stitches together a burst of images, creating a single ultra-wide image with a huge field of view, making the TX5 ideal for extra-wide landscapes and fun-filled party scenes where nobody's left out of the picture. Now even smarter, it can even align frames seamlessly if there are people moving in the scene. It also features a detailed 7.5cm touchscreen LCD, to let you line up exactly the shot you want with ease.

Because it's both super-slim and super-tough, the Cyber-shot TX5 keeps pace with the action, whether you're skiing, swimming, hiking or just partying hard. Waterproof down to 3m, it also shrugs off dust, freezing conditions and even being dropped from a height of 1.5m.

Tougher than it looks with its neatly diminutive dimensions, Sony's TX5 is a camera you'll find yourself readily slipping into a pocket when heading out for the day. You may not take your best and most admired shots with it - you'll need a budget DSLR you could otherwise snag for a similar asking price for that - but with the camera about your person you're sure to take ones that you otherwise wouldn't have.

That's the case too with the TX5's less run-of-the-mill features such as Twilight and even more unique Panorama Sweep mode. Both of these encourage further experimentation, and that's not what we'd normally expect from a snapshot camera. Add in the fact that you can use this camera not only in the dark but also in the rain, the cold and at the beach, and you have a versatile travel tool that won't take up much space at all in your luggage. It shoots HD video too, so all the latest must-haves are covered in the one package.

The only real drawback then is the high asking price. The UK's largest e-tailer was selling the Sony TX5 for £299 at the time of writing though, which, as we noted at the outset, is much more like it. Sure, it still ain't cheap, but then sometimes you just have to bite the bullet to get mostly everything you could hope for from a pocket camera.

Gutted...!! I ordered mine just over a week ago from Best Buy and my wife got it for Christmas. I paid £237 minus £35 Quidco, I thought that was a bargain...

Great camera if you have kids - pictures and video are all excellent. I have a separate DSLR for even better pictures :-)

Had a play about with my sister's and I was really impressed with the quality of the colours and general picture. The panoramic shot is very clever too! Very well made, felt rock solid.

Great deal.

I am in the market for a new camera. How would this compare to the lumix tz10? Is there any substance as well as style with the sony?

top price for a top camera, well spotted

Brilliant deal! I was going to order this only a couple of months ago when it was a ton more... Great find. Ordered. Thanks! ;-)

Yes. The H55's 14.1mp sensor will have bad noise issues above iso400 where as the TX5 is reported to do well with high iso (as well as a compact can do). The H55 is also not waterproof, dustproof and shock proof like the TX5. The only downside to the TX5 over the H55 is that it has a relatively small zoom of 4x.

Bearing in mind that I am perhaps one unlucky consumer.
Bought the Sony DSC T90 (discontinued but similar range), the touch screen matt finish started to degrade after only about 6 months (repaired by Sony), not totally happy with the CCD (odd colours indoors, red became blue - CCD replaced by Sony), indoor shots in general not great. Bought a Lumix TZ10 to replace it, fantastic camera, go for that instead. (IMHO)

The TX5 is on a different level to the T90 to be honest. And with it advertised as being a pretty rugged camera I wouldnt worry too much about longevity. It also doesn't use a CCD sensor it uses some fancy new CMOS sensor that handles low light better, so indoor shots should be nicer. That said it still uses a touch screen so I suppose one could experience similar issues with the TX5 as you have with the T90.

Fair point, the spec is rather different I suppose.

Never Buy TX5 from Best Buy ... Bad experience got the same 4 weeks ago with the same price from Best buy and stopped working within 30 days and similar cae with one other frind >>Please be carefull as Best buy are the worst dealer >> they did nor replace it with the new one .Still waiting for my money refund :(

bought this 6mo ago, its a great camera. went to the beach, underwater, dust, dropped it hiking, etc. no worries. i like the fact that unlike most other "tough" cameras, there is still a lens cover otherwise scratches can eventually start affecting your photos.

photo qual is brilliant, even in low light. i did a ton of research before buying and many reviews thought the picture qual was top 10 overall point and shoot, which is great since usually you compromise a bit of qual to get the water/dust/drop-proof.

the only thing i actually ended up wishing it had a couple more buttons. sometimes you have to click a bunch of menus to get where you want. and def have to take gloves off to register. i prb am going to get those gloves with mag. coils in the fingertips =P
