Why Sony? Because Sony keeps raising the standard of excellence in digital photography, introducing more high-quality features at affordable cost--and enhancing creative possibilities as well as expanding technology horizons. For superior value, the compact Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 provides 7.2-megapixel resolution for big prints and photo cropping, large 2.5-inch LCD screen, advanced optics and the appeal of traditional rangefinder shooting--so photo enthusiasts will have a camera that's equally adept at saving their memories and capturing their vision.

The Cyber-shot W70 offers a slim aluminium body, 7.2 effective Megapixels, High ISO Sensitivity for sharper shots in low-light conditions, Carl Zeiss 3x Optical zoom lens, large 2.5-inch LCD screen, great STAMINA battery life.

great deal. on amazon its £103

iam torn between this and the f20 which would you choose

The F20 won the "best buy" award this month in one of the Computer magazines. Think it was Computer Shopper/buyer (read it in the ASDA library yesterday) :whistling:

Not sure which cameras it was tested against, might be worth a look before parting with your pennies. :)
#10
Forgot to mention, if your not bothered about style I think the F20 would be a better buy.
#11
Torn now between this and the Nikon S500.

Both same price, Nikon doesn't get great reviews but does take (cheap) SD memory.

Sony gets ok reviews but takes (expensive) Memory Stick...

Anyone got any thoughts to help me decide, or even another camera to consider?

F20 is much better, especially in low light levels.

The LCD on the Sony is smaller than it looks, it has a thick black border to make it look bigger than it is.
#13
How does this one compare to W-35 and W-55..:?
#14
I have used w-55 and its great. not sure about this though

I say go for the Sony. The additional outlay for a good size memory card (say 2GB) might be a little more but you only have to buy it once - unlike with film.

I myself only have a 512MB card in my 5MP DSC-W1 and never fill it in one day (I use the highest possible settings), I just transfer it onto the PC after a day's shooting. Not so easy if you're on holiday and don't have PC, though. You'll need at least 2GB if you think you'll ever use the video feature a lot too. But an extra £10 isn't a lot to pay rather than sacrifice quality in my opinion.

My sister has this camera and I got full use of it when I was visiting her on holiday in Dubai (she works for Emirates). It was first rate.

My favourite place on the net for consumer digital camera reviews is Steve's digicams. It's a horrible looking site but it's what's written that you'd visit for. Here is what he had to say about the W70:

"The Sony Cyber-shot W70 is a good all-around performer. Weighing-in at just under 6 ounces (including battery and Memory Stick Duo), the W70 is both pocketable and stylish while still providing the optical viewfinder that its competitors frequently omit. With very good image quality, 7-megapixels of resolution, versatile sensitivity range, high-quality movies and an MSRP of under $300, the Sony DSC-W70 is a very good value"

EDIT: He reviews the F20 here - it does well, too.. Someone mentioned go for the F20 for style but I'd disagree, there's not a lot that's more sleek and slim than the Sony. It's what drew my sister to the Sony from the ones I suggested to her.

Think this is cheaper at dabs but not after paying delivery, but then maybe it is as there is Quidco...

Was about to get this, but then read this review:

The main culprit is, surprisingly, the lens. Despite the assurance of the prestigious Carl Zeiss name, it suffers from very bad distortion, some barrel distortion at the wide end as is usually the case, but also severe pincushion distortion at the telephoto end, something I don’t think I’ve seen before on a digital compact. This effect is the opposite of barrel distortion, as you’ll see in the sample photos. At the telephoto end it also suffers from very bad corner blurring, but only at focusing distances of less than a metre.

As much as I love Trusted Reviews for their monitor reviews, I wouldn't say they were the ultimate camera experts. This review seems to go against many of those featured on more camera-focused sites whose reviewers probably have more experience and get more cameras through their review doors.

Here, here, here and here are reviews from sites I'd normally turn to for camera reviews (more so the first 2). None of those report such issues as far as I can see.

Sample variance could always be a possibility - e.g. TR's camera could have been defective/slightly damaged in transit.

Ah, that's cool.

It's only my Auntie had a digicam and was taking pics, taking the camera into to get printed then wiping the memory card to make more space. When she told me she was doing this I was horrified and explained to her what she should be doing. She now has no hard copies of these files should the photos get lost/damaged so there's no easy way to get re-prints!

i got an official Sony carry case/mini-bag from Ebuyer and it was only £4, everywhere else was asking £15+ exc del! Got myself a nice cheap, but sturdy, tripod from them at the same time, too.

EDIT: This is the exact one except I got it for £4 from them... Maybe ebay?

The W55 is not the old model it is in fact newer the W50/W70 have been around for a while now, where as the W55 is fairly new.
