Get a Canon or a Lumix if you can. Sony and Samsung make very poor digi cameras.

And another £50 for a couple of MemorySticks?

Price of unique, dedicated memory is reason alone to steer clear of mediocre Sony digicams.

I ha\ve had two Sony cameras and honestly they were both mistakes. Before you ask...

The first was the DSC T1 - bought in Japan and it was the first "micro" sized digital camera. I sold that for £100 after a few years and bought the DSC T50. It was much better but having since compared it to other I am glad to be shot of it. I will never get another Sony camera.

After some serious thought, I just went for this one :)
I've got stacks of Sony Memory cards already from my previous camera, so makes sense for me memory wise.
They aren't THAT expensive TBH anyway...

I strongly disagree with comments that Sony make poor cameras, having owned two compact digitals in the Cybershot range, and a Digital SLR.

They consistently have good build quality, proven Cyber-Shot technology, and within the higher range of compacts (which sadly this isn't) have very good quality Carl Zeiss lenses backed with very good CCDs.

how does this compare to the older dsc w80 and dsc w220 ?

DSC-W220 is a medium class instead of budget class camera, featuring 4X Optical instead of this 3X, 12MP and most importantly a Carl Zeiss lens, better class camera.

I would think it compares more along the lines of the now 3 year old DSC-W80, however that was a better class camera than this even with its Carl Zeiss lens, however technological advances would most likely mean this has better internals.

I was going to purchase this until I realised it didn't have the Carl Zeiss lens. I've a cybershot w-30 and the image quality of that lens was astounding for the price. However this deal made me aware of the refurbished samsung wb500 on argos-clearance bargains for only £103.98 with delivery!

Does not have a great review in CNET. I would not trust SONY unless strongly recommended

A refurb WB500 is a significantly more versatile camera ... though a good bit chunkier than this Sony - it's worth taking a look at one in your local Jessops/Currys to make sure it's as pocket-sized as you hope.

No Zeiss lens and (comparatively) expensive proprietary memory make compact Sonys one for label fanboys only - their SLR range is justifiably well thought-of, but very few of their compacts have the image quality the name would lead you to believe. Samsung's WB is a far better bet (though more expensive) - that ultra-wide angle allows you to take some really impressive photos, and it has the legs over the Sony at the long end of the zoom too. No contest if you can afford the extra £40.

If you mean the DSC-W300 you wouldn't gain anything, build quality and having a Carl Zeiss lens puts it above this, and it already has a 2.7" LCD Screen, double anti blur, face detection technology etc etc....it would be a downgrade.

If you are looking to upgrade then really you should be looking at a higher optical zoom camera.

I have the 150 version of this and it takes surprisingly poor pictures. I only purchased it to replace a DSC-600, which was actually OK, but not a pocket friendly size.

To me, build quality is pretty good, as I'd expect from Sony, but with the 150 the focusing is a bit hit or miss at times and anything red gets blown out quite badly. For some reason lowering it from 8mp to 5mp helps a little, but not a lot.

Having played around with some compacts in various shops, as I keep promising to replace the Sony, I'd now only consider a Nikon, Canon or Panasonic.

Just my 2p. Always better go for a play with them in the shops and make up your own mind.

sony cameras can not take cheap memory cards

you can use an adapter to change any micro sd memory into sony pro duo format
