Steves Digicam review here
http://www.steves-digicams.co.uk/2005_reviews/sony_s40.html

Looks like a very good camera for the price, been wanting a sony but I didn't want an expensive one, some might see the mega-pixel a problem but who prints out posters. And I see the small view finder as a plus, saves on battery life ;-)

I had the DSC U30 which was a compact/small camera like this but it's now broke, I may consider upgrading to this. Thanks edi.

Bad thing abut eBay is that there are loads of Fake Memory stick and some are delivered from as far as Hong Kong so I'm not surprised if there damaged when they arrive.

This 4 GB from Sandisk seems good:

you know it only takes up to 2gb, I bought the sony 512mb & adaptor from ebuyer for £12.94 with the camera to tied me over until I see a better deal. In no rush really I normally take the pics the take them off on to the computer

The 1.5 inch screen is freaking small....I had one camera with a similar size of LCD screen and it's really bad.

All the info suggest its 2gb max but as you can see from the table you get a lot of snaps because of the 4 megapixel image

From Steves Digicam
http://www.steves-digicams.co.uk/2005_reviews/sony_s40_pg2.html

" The S40 stores its data on ~30MB of internal memory and optional Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO Cards. Memory Stick PRO (up to 2GB max.) media is required for capturing the MPEG-VX Fine mode 30fps motion video clips."

Morrison's do a 512MB pro duo with adaptor for £9.99 instore (or did a few weeks back).

Another camera bargain presently on eBuyer is the Kodak Z650 at £70.90 which isn't bad for 6mp and 10x Zoom. Seems to be well over £100 elsewhere, and gets a good review on Steve's Digicams too. Not pocket-sized though!

Anyone know if the 2GB Kingston SD cards from ChoicesUk which were posted here some time back would be compatible with this camera?

No, this camera only takes Memory Stick or Memory Stick PRO memory cards.

Play.com have 2gb sticks for £17.99 http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/741951/Sony-Memory-Stick-Pro-Duo-2GB/Product.html

i would say for this camera, a 512MB or 1GB MS card would be sufficent.

My mum purchased this camera in Boots on Tuesday evening for £15. Should have been £20 but they knocked another £5 off for a damaged box! It was a clearance and she had to have the display model. Not sure if other stores are doing the same....might be worth a look!

Sweet, this is a great price for someone whose been tempted by digital cameras in the past but has been put off by the high prices. Ordered

Have had one of these for 18 months
Bit bulky ( and a bit heavy ) for a pocket, unless you have baggy pockets.
Very good lens.
Pretty good in low light.
Under normal operation, has low latency for quick snapping.
Flash slows you down and in auto will keep it charged.
Can't say I'm impressed with battery life, ( 2AAs ) Put them in your MP3 player or clock after the camera has finished with them.
Minus point. LCD white out / unstable after 12 months. May be a common problem as I found a temporary fix on web - just tap it on the r of cybershot logo. Yesterday the flash packed up - still charges, but no flash. But it still takes good photo. You pays your money ... Don't think I'd buy another Sony.

I'm not really sure which type of memory to buy for this camera - Memorystick PRO or Memorystick PRO Duo or does it matter at all? Can you use the DUO card with the supplied adaptor? Would this affect speed of transfer to card?
Thanks to all the experts out there.

I agree, it's a shame most of the new one's made now don't have the small view finder, I don't like using the screen to take my shots but fear I will have to get used to it on my next camera, especially as I have my eye on the Panasonic Lumix.
