Sony CyberShot Nex 5 Compact System Camera + 18-55mm

The Sony NEX-5 camera offers the exquisitely high quality performance and flexibility of a DSLR, as well as Full HD video, but with the convenience and small size of a compact.
With the ability to swap E-mount lenses just like a DSLR, the Sony NEX-5 allows you to take a much wider range of shots than you could with a compact, from the most detailed macro to wide angle landscapes and distant telephoto images. You can even fit an A-mount adaptor to take advantage of your existing DSLR lenses.
However, rather than a bulky DSLR body, the NEX-5 comes with a slim and beautifully styled body that won't weigh you down, and will slip easily into a coat pocket or bag when you're out and about.
It's not just the lenses that make the camera, as the Sony NEX-5 has a stunning extra-large 14.2 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor to guarantee phenomenal imaging performance. You'll really see the difference with richly detailed, low-noise pictures, even in low light.
As well as great stills, the NEX-5 will let you capture smoothly detailed 1080ip AVCHD video, with quick autofocus to track the action -even while you're zooming. Beautiful background defocus effects add an extra dimension to creative movie shooting.
All this advanced technology doesn't come with ranks of intimidating buttons and menus though. The NEX-5 is simplicity itself to operate, with an intuitive on-screen interface, control dial and soft keys that will even allow you to make one-handed adjustments of camera settings.
The Sony NEX-5 allows you to create extra-wide images that can be viewed in 3D on compatible televisions, using Sweep Panorama mode. Meanwhile high speed burst shooting allows you to capture up to 7 frames per second - great for wildlife and sports photography - and Auto HDR combines three images at different exposure settings to capture extreme shadow and highlight detail.

Cant rely on cashback from Best Buy.
Cant rely on cashback from Best Buy.

I agree, 0 out of 2 transactions tracked.
Make a cashback enquiry - easy
sounds like a really good deal but if its true that u dont get cashback, then i would reconsider
i ordered seagate hard drive from best buy and my quidco tracked within 30 mins
Only started tracking after the item was delivered here.
Do a search for more info.
I bought this camera from Best Buy just before Christmas. Problem doesn't seem to be that it doesn't track - mine did within hours, but has not moved on to 'validated', when other items I bought at the same time or later have all done so. I'm going to give it another week or two and then see if I can get Quidco to give it a nudge. I haven't heard myself of anyone who has actually received cashback from Best Buy and I would be really interested to hear if anyone here has.

Superb camera, by the way, I'm delighted with it, both for still and video quality.
I bought this on 24th Dec from quidco but it took a week to be tracked, Im still getting to grips with mine andyken, have you bought any adapters so you can use other lenses?

No, for 3 reasons:

1. As I understand it, the adapters only give you manual operation, which I just can't be ar$ed with!
2. Part of the idea of buying the NEX-5 was that I wanted SLR quality in a more compact body, sticking on a bigger lens and adapter rather defeats the purpose.
3. I am really pleased with the quality of the 18-55mm lens which covers 90% of what I want to take pictures of (I would say it is at least as good as the Pentax 18-55mm kit lens I have been using for the past year, which gets very good reviews - if I'm really picky, I would say the Sony lens is possibly a tiny bit less sharp, but has lower chromatic aberration, so on a par over all). For the small number of photos where I want to get closer still, the overall quality is so good, I am hoping I can get away with just cropping - we'll see.

The one thing I have done, which I highly recommend, is to upgrade the firmware to version 3, which allows you to reprogram the soft keys and makes quite a number of other operational improvements - you can download it from Sony's website.

When you say 'getting to grips' I haven't found that much that needs getting to grips with, I have shot a couple of hundred photos so far and picture quality on fully auto is nigh-on as good as I can get it, just using it as a point-and-shoot.

With my previous camera, I used to spend ages post processing RAW files in Photoshop to get the very best out of my photos. With the NEX-5, the jpegs that come straight out of the camera are so good, that so far I honestly haven't been able to significantly improve on them by manipulating the RAW files, which is seriously good news IMO.
I meant the official one so it can take alpha lenses, Sony LA-EA1 NEX E-Mount Lens Adapter.
I have been wondering if its worth it tho, 140 for that then the cost of lenses has put me off a bit.
I have got the firmware 3 too, not changed any soft keys yet tho, I need more time to play about with it.
Sry for hijacking this thread tonynz :)
Even without cashback this is stll the cheapest Nex5 out there, and in much more desirable black too. My brother just got one at the Derby store and I'm seriously interested, only concern is the softness of the kit lens, it really does seem to lack bite. Still, the small size of the camera and it's smooth, grain free low light ability is very very tempting.

Best buy has never paid out a single penny to anyone it's just a scam to get you to buy then drag you through a fruitless process.
Stay away until they learn this is not how to treat innocent hard working people!!!!!
This is a good deal, I was seriously considering the nex-3 but I ended going for this deal which is still available at best buy online

Decided if I wanted dslr quality that I'd buy an actual dslr, plus the addition of the 55-200 mm lens for £349 is quite frankly a bargain
Offer is very good but I will wait for the NEX-7

I use a Minolta MD/MC adapter on my Nex-5, its great. But as stated only manual focus. Isnt really a huge problem as the quality of some of the older lenses is so much better than the kit lens or any e mount lens available. And the lenses are so much cheaper than e mounts.

The minolta and some canon mounts are small lenses eg Minolta 135mm f3.5 is tiny, id say a little longer than the kit lens (with adapter) and thinner. Also check out the canon FD lenses. IMO the adapter is well worth it if youre not to fussed with MF and are more interested in quality shots.

Before heat up this deal, can someone please come n say ' yeh i got bestbuy cashback paid, you can trust them' 8)
20% is way above average for cashback. Curry/Dixson etc. are paying about 3%.

I too is concerned with the 20% cashback through Quidco. How reliable are Bestbuy for honouring this. Seriously tempted to get this camera.

I resemble that remark. Lazy guilty people like me are entitled to cashback too.
Bestbuy stores are rubbish too, had the worst experience ever, would not give them my money ever again.
I tried going through Quidco and the price comes up as £549.99, but when I go through the link here, it's 349.00. What am I doing wrong??

Doh, found out myself. it was another package along with another lens, which came to 549.99. found it.

Grrrr I really want to buy this camera quidco or not but every time I try to make the card payment it just won't go through. I even set up another account with a different card and it still wouldn't go through. I might try and ask a friend to set up an account and try and pay for me but I doubt if that would work either.

I just seem to be banging my head against a wall, even when not going through quidco it doesn't work. The customer support is non existent, I have sent them emails but no response. I want to give them money! You wouldn't think it would be so hard!

What's really frustrating is that I know other people have managed to buy the camera even recently.
Great Offer - just ordered and Quidco's tracked at £70. Have been wondering about this camera for a while but at £279 that's not far from the price of an ordinary compact.
I tried ordering Canon 550D with thru Quidco, for the past 2 weeks, Failed at all the 5 attempts at the last stage of payment approval...gave up and ordered at amazon...TCB forums has a lot of comments on this issue
bestbuy being slagged off again see the pattern here folks? they suck.
the camera looks great thanks for the review on it.
hey can someone help me out i signed up to quidco and went through their site to the camera and payed etc for it but nothing showing up on quidco site, have i done something wrong?

Was my first time using quidco?
What does this mean (taken from Quidco website)?

"Cashback is not paid on Best Buy Entertainment purchases"
Just tried a friends card, different bank, different billing and delivery address, made an entirely new account with a different email address, no quidco and still got "We're extremely sorry but we are unable to process your order at this time. Apologies for any inconvenience."
your computer?
Nope a different computer
different network connection?
Different town!
This is still a good deal without Quidco.

I paid £420 for the NEX-3 with the other lens less than 6 month ago. At the time the NEX-5 was over £500.

I love my camera. The photo quality is amazing. I'm looking to buy the official fisheye lens soon.
Has anybody received cashback from Bestbuy yet? I purchased this camera from them since early December last year still got no sign of validation!

Edited By: kimkl on Jan 14, 2011 13:55: not finished the sentence
In case it helps I was using Internet Explorer 8,
I signed into Quidco
I clicked on the Bestbuy link
This took me to the URL:**my account details**)
I searched for NEX5
Added to basket
Checked Out
Created New Account
Paid with Mastercard Credit Card
Cashback Tracked :)

Not sure if it's any of the steps above like if you already have an account if it's the Browser you're using or Payment Type but this worked smoothly for me.
My cashback tracked in no time but since then it's still stay as 'track' which is quite a while already (over a month or so)!

So, has anybody got it validated yet from Best Buy? or even from Sony vat back scheme?
