I 2nd that this is a good system. I bought it myself about a month ago at that price from Amazon.

Just everyone remember it ONLY has digital in. (1*optical and 1*digi coax).

It has an HDMI OUT and a SCART OUT.

I use it with my PS3 and Sky+, both connected optically via an optical switch (bought through amazon marketplace around £5) HQ Optical TOSlink 3 Port Switch and 3*1m optical leads from a company called Kenable http://www.kenable.co.uk (under £10 for 3 leads delivered)

Thats the same one as the OP posted but from someone other than Amazon. Why pay more ??

I'll throw a Divx disk in it later. I play all my stuff through my PS3 normally.

They were really really quick too. In fact so was the marketplace optical switch I bought. Slowest was Amazon. I was in posession of the leads and switch before Amazon even despatched. I did pick Free delivery though and it arrived in about a week.

Ok, tried a divx disk in mine (the £130 one) and no it didnt play, so there must be a difference right enough.

The UK model does not play Divx or Xvid.

Presume the 360 doesnt have optical out then ??

It really does only have those 2 inputs; optical and digi coax.

Maybe your TV has an optical out ??? some do.

I guess you mean the sound? A normal optical digital lead into the Sony and set it the Sony to 'TV' to play the sound through the 5.1 set up.

Personally not a big Sony fan but voted hot as it's a good deal at that price.

360 has an optical out incldued in its hd component cable - all you need is a toslink cable. I got mine from ebay for a few quid.

Dont worry too much about buying dearer optical cables. Nothing much to be gained in my opinion.
I posted a link further back to a place called kenable. I got 3 1m optical leads from them inc. delivery for under a tenner. I think they are about £2.50 each. Unless you want longer ones of course.

My friend bought this sony system a month ago and paid £135 delivered from Dixons. I went out with him to various shops and tried out a few of these 5.1 system under £200. We tried this model in Sony Centre and of all the system we tried, this Sony has way better sound effect and bass and for a lower price. At some point I thought it was a misprice but it took him a minute (after testing) to decide that's the model to buy.

Done the same myself. Went to Currys or Comet(cant mind) and tried it and was amazed at the sound for the price. I'm sure there'll be lots of better ones but not at that price. COD4 on PS3 is like being truly in a warzone now. surprised it didnt at least have a couple of phono inputs but it had what I needed.

I've got the 230 - one model down? - it's an 850 too. Superb sound, very loud and basey!

Searched high and low to make it a multi region but it seems the only way to do this is to 'hire' a remote from eBay. However, tried a Region 1 in it for chance and it worked ! ! ! I'm not saying it's a multi region; but it plays R1 & R2 - that's ideal for me.....

I'm with agaveworm, I've got the same system (DAV-DZ230) and although some people don't seem to like it, I think it's a cracking system for the price. For the output you won't beat this system on price I don't think.
I'm considering buying this system though because it's got the optical port, where as mine doesn't ...plus I blew 2 of the front speakers :whistling:

It might sound a silly question but I'm not that good when it comes to audio / video devices.

Could this act as a replacement to my DVD player, amp, and CD player ie work as a music centre?

Well I can connect my Xbox to my TV (samsung r87) using HDMI rather than component, but my TV does have opitcal out so I assume that's what I'll need?

Loud bass ruins a good movie IMO, effects on action movies with bass turned up sound so false. The only thing you can replicate is a sonic boom.

Then surely you turn the bass down?

Hi can anyone tell me if it's possible to get this system to play music in mp3 format thru all 5 speakers - as opposed to just the center and 2 front speakers? I assume it is possible but at the moment i'm struggling to get it to work.

Also at I can only get DVD's to play thru the surround system at the moment - I assume i need some extra cables. I have a PVR which is connected directly to the TV and then the home theatre is connected via HDMI lead to the TV. What i need lead would i need to run from the PVR and TV to get sound thru the surround system.

I hope this makes sense and thanks for any help ina advance. Regards Fraz

Yes frazman, press Sound Field a few times till you get to A.F.D Multi, and i believe it upmixes it to 5 channels, it won't be true surround but at least it'll play through them all.

As for the other bit you mentioned, I'm not entirely sure sorry. My way of doing it was just to have a 3.5mm audio cable from the lcd tv to the front of the theatre system.

ok thanks for your help aspire5600 - can anyone recommend a source for an audio cable to connect from the my sony lcd to the home theatre to get the tv to run thru the home theatre system. thanks in advance for any help. Fraz

Kenable (available on ebay too) seem to be about the cheapest place I believe, as for cables I'm sure when I connected my theatre system I received sound via HDMI or Scart.
Someone may be able to help you a bit further though, good luck!
