Lol true, the image wuality must be great zoomed in at 2000x. Not a bad deal though

thats a marketing gimmick! its not fair but it kinda works cos if somebody doesnt know anything about zoom once they see oh check the sony its got higher zoom than the panasonic lets get that.. unfair but it works

Good price but an old model.

DV is a great way to record, its not as easy to transfer to your PC (mine uses firewire) as other card based corders, but overall quality is good.

2000x zoom, useless unless you have a sturdy tripod. Its also digital zoom not optical so the quality will be very very blocky.

Apart from that nice deal indeed!

This camera has NEVER been £265 anywhere remotely reputable. It's always been in this price range and now outdated, hence this lot trying to fob it off as a bargain. Very cold from me (and I like MiniDV cameras).

excuse my ignorance but does dv have any advantages over say dvd or hdd formats?

It is but the quality is still great. I have a model older than this and the quality on it is amazing.

Yes it has some advantages if you want to edit your videos with the highest quality

A lot of DVD & HDD camcorders save your filming into a compressed file format, which is OK if you just want to watch the film without editing them. But if you try and edit these videos on a computer the image quality is quite poor as the video is compressed again once edited.

40x optical though which is still better than most camcorders, you can disable digital zoom anyways which I recommend. You cna use USB instead of firewire with sony camcorders, but firewire is better quality and IMO easier.

40x is more than needed for every day use. Digital zoom is pretty useless to be honest as the quality drops off very quickly. My camera has 1000x and i used it once, cant see a thing!

The USB / firewire issue only really matters if you have a PC with no firewire input. I had to buy a cheap card but agree it is easy, i'm more used to USB input, neither usb or firewire are that complicated!

I know this may be a stupid question but what is DV... do I have to buy tapes? or CD's, DVD's...

Would this be any use to video sports..... for example autograss??? (cars racing round a tgrass oval track)

I was loooking a the video camera Aldi have on Special this week.... but love Sony products..

Which would be best..???
Any advice really appreciated....

dv are the small video tapes you can get eg http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DVM-60PR2E-Premium-60min/dp/B000BFQ27E/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1239907552&sr=1-9
vs the aldi one ...
this has optical zoom which is going to be essential for ...well.. zooming
eg on cars as they approach and pass.
the aldi one had no optical zoom so any zooming is like taking a small picture and stretching it in MSpaint (low quality) rather than cutting out a part of a large picture that optical zoom does. (good quality)
aldi one seems 'good' for filming more static movies but haven't looked at any reviews.

anyone else getting a very loud mechanical whirring noise when recording (also in playback but not as loud?

i expect a degree of noise (have had mini dv before) but this is too much. only makes the noise while the tape is in
