On paper this camera looks good but there are no reviews I can find.
Not using AA type batteries rules it out as a travel companion (unless you carry a backup AA powered camera as well). By travel I mean world-wide travel, not just going away for the weekend.

So, it's a mixed bag.

Just google "HX5V review". There's loads of reviews out there. Admit review-wise it's a mixed bag though.

This is an excellent camera. Had mine for a few months and is easily the best digital camera I've owned (I've had other Sony's, a Panasonic, Fuji and Nikon).

What? Ever heard of buying a spare battery or two (they're only a few quid on eBay as they're used by loads of Sony Cameras so plenty of compatible batteries to choose from), and then charging them up overnight?

That's what I've done with mine, and find that one battery easily lasts a day, even doing HD video recording.

I have to agree. This is one amazing little camera. Pictures are crisp and clean and overall a good replacement for my TZ5.

I also love the 1080 video recording mode.

Heat added for the best price I've seen on this thus far.

Great price for a great camera, cheapest in the UK at this price. I purchased one 2 weeks ago and found the best prices to be John Lewis locally @ £299 with a 4gb hd card.

If you are looking at getting a digital photo frame then this is a good deal @ £284.00 with a free d72 digital photo frame

That was £299.00 a couple of weeks ago.

I have to say that I read some cracking reviews on this, I love it.

I see you have never really travelled then :) (no power supplies for charging, forgot the spares, etc.)

How does it compare to a TZ5 then? Was thinking of TZ7/ZX1 - they're certainly a lot cheaper than this.

Would be interested in what other cameras you've had and how it compares. Have you used TZ7/ZX1 ?

I believed this too until I was cought out in the middle of town with empty batteries. No cherged Sony battery for sale anywhere but shelves full of AA batteries. I ended up buying a new (cheap) camera with AA batteries and got my pictures taken which I otherwise not have had. I'd never buy another camera with propriator batteries. Without a battery the best camera in the world is useless

I travel frequently, which was a big reason for getting this camera with GPS, as I was tired of geo-tagging hundreds of photos manually. Last time was to Spain just last week. So ner! :p

I've yet to find anywhere that doesn't have somewhere I can plug in a charger though, and I'm organised enough not to forget my spare batteries, or tripod, case, extra memory cards, iPad camera connection kit, USB cable etc. etc.
