bought one of these last summer when they were on offer at amazon, quality camera.

sony have just announced their new range of dslr's, and whilst they do not seem to offer any major improvements you might expect to see the older range dropping in price a little in the near future to clear them.

You will probably also want to factor in the cost of a new lense as although the one supplied with the camera is ok its not great and anyone serious enough about photography to consider a dslr in the first place will probably want to upgrade it sooner rather than later

The list price of the replacement is £499 so it is going to be a lot more plus it isn't going to be available to July and the A200 is available now, this is a good buy in comparison as it has an identical sensor and processor and the new version will have a smaller capacity battery given about 50% less shots before a recharge, you are right though a better lens would be worthwhile

I agree the new range does not seem to be a step forward, I was just raising the possibility that the current range may get reduced to make way for the new range but it is by no means definite.

This price however seems to be the going rate for this camera at the moment, same price at argos as well, so not really a hot deal or a cold one for that matter and it is a good entry level dslr.

Would not be better to buy Nikon D40 for slightly higher price from Amazon?

True, but old Minolta lenses are compatible with this camera and they can be picked up fairly cheap on ebay etc.
