Good reviews on amazon and pretty good review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydslra200/

voted hot but ..

D40 is cheaper and I still fancy getting the Olympus E510 for about £340 with 2 lenses from ebay, £430 ish on Amazon

Ok, we've had the Nikon, now the Sony, must be time for the Canon 400d, which is what i really want!!!

Good price, also the latest issue of digital photo magazine gave this the gold award, ahead of both the 400d and the D40x

Just ordered the Nikon D40 from Amazon, is this a better choice?
Seems more sophisticated/has more features & megapixels...

I dont think you can go wrong with the d40 deal, but the sony has the megapixel advantage if you want to crop your photos or need really large prints.

The nikon has a really good kit lens so no problem enjoy it mate.

I've had mine for 2 weeks now - bought the 2 lens kit from Amazon. Easy to use and takes great photos. Now is the time to step up from that compact to a DSLR. No regrets with the Sony A200!

mega pixels aside the real advantage the sony alphas have over the nikon & canon cameras is the built in image stablisation & focus motors on the body. It basically means it's much cheaper to upgrade lenses compared to the nikon/canon system where you pay a premium on lenses with built in image stablisation & HSM motors.

some people claim the image quality is better on the nikon vs sony, but i find this hard to believe given sony makes their senors. The canons are better at controlling noise on higher ISO settings (1600+) but at they're all similar at lower settings, anyway if you're having to use ISO 1600+ you really need to be thinking about buying a flashgun or a faster lens.

PS i own a sony a350 so i might be a bit bias but i bought into the sony system because i felt it offered the most bang for buck.
