note, the lens shown above is not the one that comes with it. It ncomes with an ordinary sony lens, not a carl zeiss one.

I was going to buy this, but the noise and NR killed it for me, as i like to take pictures in the dark with no tripod.

I bought one two weeks ago from PC World with a free bag for £269 after price match and mine says Carl Zeiss, as does my friends who bought one last week.

Fantastic camera - bought mine 2 weeks ago from Amazon. Came with Sony lens not Zeiss ones. Still a bargain and a great way to step up to DSLR witout breaking the bank!
#8
Voted Hot for the price is very good spec camera and any problems with noise as mentioned only seems to start at above 800 iso and btw if you don't want nr on shoot in Raw instead :whistling:
Very good camera as many reviews point out :)

I've been thinking about buying one of these for a while now. Has anyone seen the version with a 75-300 mm lens? Is it worth it?

How does this compare to the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 for £192.99 @ buyacamera.co.uk??

Does anyone know if you're able to use the LCD to "take" the photo on this... or is it old-style viewfinder only?

The A200 is viewfinder only

the A300 & A350 feature liveview so you can see compose your shot in the LCD screen

There no quite the same to compare the Fz18 is a very good camera which theres loads good reviews to back that up but the a200 is better being a Dslr you do get better photos i own both aswell as other cameras including the Tz5 aswell

The Fz18 is good though and unlike a Dslr you dont have to carry extra lenses about and its more compact too with good 18x Optical zoom or even 28x if willing to lower the resolution .

as mentioned you only can use the viewfinder to take pictures on a a200 which i use mostly on any cameras i have that let you do so tbh but once you have took your photo there obviously viewable on the Lcd afterwards.

No Liveview on this, so its only through the viewfinder (which tbh, is my prefered way anyway). Imho, liveview on dslrs is little more than a gimmick - useful for tripod work (landscapes and macro) but not so good on handheld everyday shots.

You need the A350 if you want liveview (or an Olympus or Canon 450d)

like michael phelps next to a 4 yr old girl with armbands. thats a bit extreme, but seriously, the difference between an SLR with a nice set of lenses, and a good camera with a fixed lens is just huge.

and i've heard people talk about the noise on the sony, and, to be honest, i really don't see it. unless they mean the actual noise of the shutter, which is quite loud, and bothers a lot of people. but me, i don't care. it's an SLR, it's meant to make a noise when it takes a photo.

in case any recent sony alpha owner is interested i'm selling a minolta 100-300mm zoom lens on fleabay (item 220267294201) which will work perfectly on the sony alphas (as sony bought out minolta and continued with their mount).

Much cheaper than buying a brand new sony 70-300mm lens

(mod please feel free to remove if it's against the rules)

Very comprehensive review here:

If I hadn't got an Olympus with LiveView for £30 less a few months ago I might be tempted by this...
#22
Got one bout a month ago Brillliant Cam for the price.
#23
Warehouse Express will do pricematch of 110% so you'll save a little on this to. Just fill in the form on their site.
#24
Or order with someone reliable. I'd take Amazon over Unheardof Express any day.
#25
I recently purchased the A350 after getting Jessops to pricematch Dixons and I'm still getting to grips with it. Build quality is typical Sony and I was gonna mention about this bag being £17.99 at Play.com but looks like they've cottoned on now and amended the price. Lucky I got mine at £17.99 though!!! :whistling:

Also interested to know about the Nikon D40 vs this. Ta
#29
Well I got a D40 after considering this camera and I have no regrets. Despite the advice on shooting RAW to avoid the noise. I went for the D40 4 months ago because of this. I have no regrets.
But to note this is a great deal.

£259 including delivery, better using Amazon in my opinion.

You sir are an imbecile.

Go do some groundwork before you run your mouth, they're winners of multiple photography retailer awards - Best Online Retailer 2006 & 2007 - and also feature in The Times top 100.

Now get back in your box...
#33
I would also prefer Amazon upon any online retailer. Awards cannot make customer services.
#34
Preference is one thing, blind sighted ignorance is another.

Personally ill always deal with specialists over bigger companies. It's no wonder independants are a dying breed when so many adopt a hands off policy in favour of buying from multinationals.

If I buy a camera, I go to a camera retailer. I to like Amazon, but for non-specialised goods.

Common sense says Amazon. Some of us who buy online like reliability, see? But nice try.

Low-IQ spider sense... tingling...
#37
ahh, beej, but remember that if you buy from an "independant retailer" they throw in a free gift of Smug for you to carry around with you, and inform everyone that you like to support independant retailers.

I'm sure that other camera shop is perfectly fine, but when i shop online i'd rather keep the number of places who have my card details as small as possible, i'd rather deal with a company who's return/refund policy is airtight, and i have good experience of, someone who will have phonelines available, someone who handles thousands of sales a day, etc etc. and although i think a specialist is a great place to go for advice, i don't see how buying the exact same box from a camera dealer would be any different to buying it from a circus clown. if it's the same thing, it's the same thing.

Very poor post. Warehouse Express are one of the best retailers on the net for Optics/Cameras.
#39
warehouse express is arguably thee top online camera specialist for higher end equipment - anyone who's bought a camera mag will have seen their ads.

The notion they're somehow unreliable is absurd, that said i wouldn't really care whether i bought from amazon or warehouse express, they're both reliable and it's not as if the product's going to be any better from either. Just whoever is offering the better deal.
#40
And that was my point, I've bought loads of stuff from there because they do pricematch with a 10% saving on anything they match.

No brainer!
