I've been watching this camera for a few days, since it was last posted at £250. It dropped another fiver a day or 2 ago, and again has just dropped another fiver to £240.41.

With the still available £30 cashback - link to form in next post - this brings it down to £210.41. An amazing price for a well thought of entry level DSLR, needless to say i've now ordered!

You cannot find a better DSLR for the money, quality bit of kit and comparible with the Nikon D60 (Even then throws in autofocus and anti shake built into the camera body rather than the extra expense of having it in the lens) Hot deal if you are quick to get the cashback offer in.

Bought it myself in November for £199 at Currys Megastore reopening M6 J9, for £10 more than that this is a steal of a price.

Please note though, like a lot of DSLRS sub £400-500 it doesnt have live view if that bothers you then you would need to spend more or look at a budget Olympus.

For some people coming from using compacts, they find this a step backwards, but you have to remember that what you are looking at through the viewfinder is true, unlike with compacts.

Thanks to cicobuff for the pointer and to fubarphill for the post. Much heat.

Good deal, i got mine from Amazon for about 220, without cashback.
#6
Really good deal! I ordered mine two days ago for £245 and ill be applying for the £30 cashback too :). Another thing to point out is that nearly all DSLRs wont come with any memory. The alpha200 takes compact flash cards and I bought the following 4GB one from amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SANDISK-ULTRA-II-4GB-CARD/dp/B0007QU6ZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232704791&sr=8-1

Anybody know if this is a good deal and relatively suitable? Hope it is lol!

Great deal, I love my A200.

Don't forget that even though Sony are new players in the DSLR market, you can use any Minolta auto focus lens on this camera, meaning there is a huge market of quality used lenses available!

That card is fine, it is the 1 that I have :)

I got mine from play.com before xmas for £197 with the cash back off. Fantastic camera even at this price and works with my Minolta Dynax 500 lenses perfectly.

I wonder if we will see lower Sony prices now that they have forecast a 2.9 Billion dollar hole in their finances:

Thats excellent advice, thanks! I have been trying to teach myself quite a lot about photography over the past couple of days and one thing that keeps being repeated is not to skim money for a cheap lens but instead invest in something that will last you years.

Does anybody know what a good lens would be for taking long distance portraits? I believe they are maybe called telephoto lenses? any if so, maybe any current offers or how much one would expect to pay for one?

Thanks in advance!

Just to clarify as I'm new to DSLR photography does this mean the LCD on the camera doesn't show you what you see through the viewfinder?
#13
Yes it does after you have took the pic I got one of these yesterday.
#14
You are talking about live view which this camera does not have. You dont need it on a DSLR to be honest.

Yes, it does mean that. Obviously you can see the photo after you've taken it, but not before. Using a viewfinder is better in many respects anyway, in particular you will get less camera shake by holding the camera up to your eye rather than holding it away from you.

Long distance photos? Or portraits?

For long distance photos you need a telephoto lens, with 200mm as a minimum, and preferably much more. A "proper" lens from the main manufacturers is likely to be around £450 for a 70-200mm F4 type lens, though consumer grade lenses, possibly with longer ranges will be cheaper.

For portraits, you want a lens from around 50mm to 80mm or so, preferably with a wide aperture. With non full-frame sensors, a 50mm will function similarly to a 75mm, so be careful about what you go for. The consumer grade lenses atart at about £60 for a fixed zoom (prime) lens, while the professional level ones go for nearer to a grand.

Not sure whether to thank the OP or not.

Great deal, but I'm now £200 poorer! :)

It is a very good camera i got one last week from amazon, just remember that if you still choose free delivery it will get sent via a courer, and if you get a memory card with it , it wont turn up the same time as the camera, mine turned up the day afterwards.

This is true. I ordered mine though using my free trial of Prime. So hopefully will both arrive on the same day (tomorrow), at least that is what the estimated despatch/delivery dates suggest.

Will be gutted if the camera arrives and no memory card as i'm itching to get snap happy! :)

My wife bought me one of these last November and it's been a very good camera, since then I've bought a couple more lenses and I'm now back to the level where I'm confident in using an SLR fully manual again and the controls seem much better laid out on this camera than my old Dynax.

I wouldn't have a problem recommending this camera, it doesn't have live view and you have to use the eyepiece, which is how I prefer to use an SLR anyway so that's no biggy from me. The kit lens is reasonable too and has a reasonable range, so there's no reason to run off buying new lenses immediately, much better to wait until you know what you want to photograph and how and then you can spend your money on a lens that suits your style of photography.

Keep away from Flickr though, I'm seriously hooked since getting back into SLR's. ;-)

Anyone wanting to look for second hand lenses and wishes to read up on some of the older minolta lenses will find this link useful.

Bought one of these last time around (£242.00) however sent it back when Amazon dropped the price to ~ £215.00 one day before the cashback expired, quite a few people bagged one for ~ £185.00. Waiting to death this time !

Got the fantastic a200 last year and I am very pleased with the results. Also managed to get a nice Sigma 70-300mm lens for under a ton on Fleabay (£137 on Amazon).

That lens is regularly on sale at less than £100 at warehouseexpress.com (currently £94.99) with free delivery and the APO version of the same lens is £150 from the same place, incase people would rather avoid EBay.

I've got the APO version and it's a reasonable lens if anyone is thinking of building up their lens collection on the A200. :)
