I agree, I am seriously tempted to go for this myself, but I have got a Pentax K-m that I am very happy with. This is better though....

Only significant difference regarding features vs the likes of the Pentax K-x or Nikon D5000 is that they have HD video, but this is a 'newer' camera than either the Pentax or the Nikon and has a number of extra features like face recognition that the others don't have. I doubt that you would notice any difference in image quality between any of them, but at this price I am inclined to just give the Sony the edge.

Gets a 'highly recommended' from Photographyblog.com:

i got the A500 the other day from john lewis as an upgrade to my A350

most of the improvements are marginal - quieter motor - better auto focus - larger screen - taller popup flash - liveview MF check

the significant upgrade is decent ISO1600 (and usable ISO3200) and 5fps

the downgrade is that the A350 can still produce a crisper image between ISO100-400 - the image quality from the A350 just rules but it falls over at above ISO800 - if you're shooter that takes most of your photos in decent daylight (say landscapes/city trips etc) arguably you're better off with the A350

@ thevulture
the A390 still seems like a slight downgrade to the orginal A350 as it's missing a AEL button and uses the smaller battery (although an improvement to the A380) - if you're interested in a A390 why not just buy a A350? I've got mine listed for sale at avforums

My goodness, well found and thanks for posting! I have looked through the details and can't see any reason why this wouldn't qualify. Added to your rep and amended listing to include. :)

I called Sony and they confirmed that Currys were particip55ating in the cashback deal but no stock online so could not use the code. However, I have reserved for collection from a local store and also when via Quidco so maybe 3%.

Anyone want to by a Sony A100 with 18-55 :-)

Fantastic deal & well spotted. Only just bought a compromise Panasonic DM-FZ38 for the zoom as I was going on holiday. It's a decent bridge camera, but showing it's limitations especially in lower light situations. With this under £100 more I wish I had waited. Or perhaps I could pass the Panasonic to a photo mad daughter to replace her Fuji S1500 and get this. Wonder if my wife would go for that.........

Same price at PC World and potential 3.5% cashback via quidco - saves a few more pennies if PC World are part of the Sony promotion.

98 pence less at John Lewis here http://www.johnlewis.com/230720591/Product.aspx, but no Quidco or 5% code. Looks like it might be coming down in price over a wider range of retailers for some reason. They have a link to the £80 cashback and you can have a three year warranty for £47.

Just spoken to PC World and they confirmed that they are NOT participating in this cashback deal.

I have no just spoken to Currys and they too have confirmed that they are NOT a participating store in the £80 cashback.

Sony didn't have a clue when I phoned them!

Looks like PC World and Currys already have the discount taken off the list price where as Jessops is more expensive but the cashback can be claimed.

Glad I phoned first!

That makes John Lewis by far the cheapest for this then. They are definitely participating (though it might be worth a phone call first to make certain) as there is a link to the cashback claim on their website and the price is £429, pre cashback.

No your not having a blond moment - it isn't on the camera page, but it does come up as a John Lewis link if you do a google search for the Sony £80 cashback promotion!

I've just spoken to John Lewis, but can't find anyone capable of answering the question! It does make a big difference to the price and I can't understand why Sony make it so complicated. Amazon have a link, but they are still at £519 which makes me think that John Lewis might have already taken off the discount as well, but the fact that you can get the claim form via their website might suggest otherwise.:?

When I spoke to Sony they told me that the deal had been extended to all shops selling official (not grey import) stock and therefore JL and Currys are included.

First impressions of the camera are that its quite big, larger than the A100 and while build quality is good it feels plasticy with the mode dial felling particularity flimsy.

The viewfinder is quite small but the live view is top class.

Picture quality looks to be on par with other cameras in the class.
