The S500i offers a good level of functionality, including all the essentials, and looks beautiful. However, you should avoid this phone for the simple reason that it will probably break. The phone feels quite plasticky and flimsy, but it's the keypad that's the real problem. The keys just crack, as simple as that. Roughly half of our users have reported that their keys cracked. This is an almost unprecedented failure rate, and really you'd be daft to buy one of these phones knowing that. Better to go for the Sony Ericsson W610i or K810i instead. Or, if it's stunning looks you're after, then perhaps the Samsung U600.

my girlfriend has one of these. Has had one for nearly a year.

I was worried about the cracking keys too .. but, i've used it with no probs. Just treat it like a phone and not a bash pad and you'll be fine.

read the articles on the net and some say that it's due to the paint they used ... this was a year ago ... it must be sorted now!!

My daughter has one of these. within 24 hours of getting it she droppped it on a carpeted floor and the screen got a big black blob on it. We replaced the screen (ebay) and since then it has been fine but she is extremely careful with it now. The keys have not cracked yet and she has been using it for 6 months. It is a very nice looking phone.

So tempted to get one of these but put off by the negative reviews. Still voting hot for the price.

Damn those look nice.

People are saying that the bottons crack but they dont break. they are just like the w580i buttons.

In fact, it does look exactly like a w580i, apart from the buttons in the top left and right corners. Apart from that they look no different.

Record for oldest thread to pass the "hot" threshold? :)

I've had mine for nearly two years now and have had no problems whatsoever with it.

In that time my Mum's N95 has gone back twice and my brother's w580i has fallen apart. I have the black version and it's a very nice phone.

It's not great for taking pics with but the music player on it is pretty decent.

Voted hot :)

My girlfriend had two W580's, which as mentioned are virtually the same as these, and they both broke within about six months.

Anyone know what the difference between this and the W580i is? Even the dodgy number pads are the same.

The 1st gen SE's did suffer from cracking but most were recalled last year and the problem was fixed....

At £49.99 New with your 1 year warranty you cant really go wrong.... and if you have kids they love the SE's

the u600i is renowned for having an insensitive touchpad. you often need to press button many times over to get an input, many online web reviews reflect on this

Goldtastic...it'll suit Jimmy Saville types (but no one else)...at least if his keys crack Jim'll fix it.
