The Sony Ericsson W995 is the most advanced Cyber-shot/Walkman handset Sony Ericsson have released to date and excels in both the music and imaging stakes with an array of features that will have all you technophiles out there foaming at the mouth, making the tag multimedia all-rounder an absolute understatement.

8 Mega Pixel Digital Camera
Walkman Music Player
GPS (Global Positioning System) enabled
Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate
Wi-Fi Technology
The 8.1 megapixel camera incorporates LED flash, geo-tagging, face recognition and autofocus, while the Walkman 4.0 player includes Shake control, SenseMe and TrackID, and thanks to MediaGo you can drag and drop video clips, tracks and photos between your phone and PC with consummate ease.

Compact casing gives the W995 a real feel of solidity & features such as the circular navigation pad & kickstand are some nice practical additions. The fantastic 2.6 inch screen provides clarity and colour. With so many features, the W995 is set to be a sure-fire hit.

shame, would have been nice to use the 3 glitch sim card in this and sell the SE that came with it.

Still a good price though... heat.

it says that the PAYG phones have to be at least 12 months old.

I've done it with new phones. In fact, as far as I am aware, Vodafone don't lock their phones anymore.

They do however still put rubbish branded firmware on them.

It's only contract phones that come unlocked from Vodafone.

Martin the phones that Voda unlocked for you did you buy them from the Vodafone shop and where they PAYG ones?

It seems to be a common consensus on this site that Voda will unlock PAYG phones for free but their t+c blurb seems to contradict this however. I'm confused.

One was a contract phone and the other PAYG from Play.com.

Called with both and got them unlocked.
#11
I also wonder as the phone is from phones4u, and as I don't believe Vodafone supplies the W995 on its network, there is every chance these will be unbranded and simply supplied with a PAYG sim card.

£10 Quidco available aswell.
#13
I bought a Vodafone one today from a store and have an O2 sim card working fine in it. Came unlocked.

Good find, heat and rep:thumbsup:

should be hotter, £100 cheaper than anywhere else

I have this phone and replaced my Creative Zen mp3 with this. This has so much better sound than you would ever think and is without a doubt the first phone that you would truly say is as good as a normal mp3 player. Just buy yourself a 16gb memory card from ebay and you're sorted!

I like to keep them seperate due to generally poor battery life on phones, especially ones with features like this.

I think it cones with an 8 gig M2 card too which is a bonus, if it's not unlocked I will probably use davinci server for 15 euros.

Mine arrived just now, unlocked and unbranded! :)

Which "network" did you buy yours on?

If she wants mobile internet I would look at other networks before choosing Virgin Mobile tbh. The Virgin tariff for £10 includes 200 mins and unlimited texts but doesn't include web browsing. Web browsing will cost an extra 30p per day on top. If she surfs everyday then you're looking at £19 a month which is far too expensive for a 200 minute tariff. They do the same package with 200 mins, unlimited texts and web bolt on for £18 a month but that's also not very good compared to what you can get elsewhere.

Virgin have also implemented a "one minute minimum duration" policy for all calls. That means that even if she calls a friend's mobile and the call goes straight through to voicemal this will deduct a minute from her monthly allowance, even if the call only lasted one second. If she makes a lot of these kind of calls then her minutes are going to run out a lot sooner than expected. AFAIK Virgin are the only network with such a policy. Coupled with the fact that if she goes over her 200 mins then you're going to be paying a whopping 35p per minute for calls to other mobile networks and considering not many people are on Virgin Mobile these days then that's going to mount up.

The best option in my opion would be O2 Sim Only. For £19.58 a month you can get 600 mins and 1200 texts and unlimited internet bolt on. So basically just £2 for an extra 400 mins above what Virgin are offering and 1200 texts should be more than enough even for text addicts. There's normally £23 Quidco cashback on this deal aswell which would be pay for the first months line rental.

The cheapest pay as you go network for calls and texts is Asda Mobile 8p per minute for calls to ALL networks and 4p per text to ALL networks and 20p per MB for internet. They share Vodafone's network so an Asda sim will work in the Vodafone version of this phone regardless of whether the phone is unlocked or not.

Hope this helps.

wow thanks so much for all your help..it's a mine field to me...i think the o2 you mentioned seems to be the best option..i have quidco so i will go through that too...the virgin one is probably only any good if she had a basic phone but being 15 they want better phones
thankyou

Yeah you might aswell go for the O2 deal. It would be a shame spending so much on a posh phone and not being able to make the best use of it. I'm on the same O2 deal myself (ironically after moving to them from Virgin). Started off on the 30 day O2 sim for £20 then moved on to the 12 month version in August for the same price, extra minutes and £100 Quidco. You could maybe see how she goes at first on the 30 day contract then if alls well upgrade to the 12 month sim for the Quidco. After 12 months on that you can renew again and get more Quidco or haggle a deal with retentions. I joined Virgin sim only 3 years ago and back then got 200mins and 500texts for £15pm (no web). It was considered a good deal back then as they were the first network offering sim only but they've long since been undercut by their competitors. They were taken over by another company during that time and have become rather stingy since.
