My local Gamestation (Altrincham) has loads of EyeToy webcams for just 50p.
They are a mix of the old black version (Logitech) and the new silver version (Namtai).

The picture quality of the camera is better than most other webcams I've tried and, though I can't speak for the Namtai ones, the Logitechs are great. 640x480, and comparatively good at accommodating changes in light level. They have a manual variable focus.
They're also quite a good looking unit in black and so could be useful in carputer applications etc.

Simply plug into a spare USB port and get the appropriate driver from here: http://www.iplayplaystation.com/eyetoy-as-webcam/

Hey presto! a great webcam for pennies.

Cheap webcam

Better than most others too, ive got one hidden in a bird box as a security camera and using webcam monitor to view and autocapture movement as video and snaps, also allows me to stream it online and upload via ftp to webspace.

I've had PS2 EyeToy cameras working with "Resistance 2" (Beta & Commercial), "Killzone 2" (Various Multiplayer Betas), "LittleBIGPlanet" (Beta & Commercial), "SOCOM: Confrontation" (Beta), and "Burnout Paradise" (Commercial).

BFN,

fp.

also works with singstar on ps3

Good camera aswell, had mine since eyetoy play and better then some others iv used that cost a lot more then the rrp, so 50p is a steal.
#10
I used to use an eyetoy as a webcam until I installed XP X64 and couldn't find 64bit drivers :(
It worked very well in XP 32bit
#11
.... but typically wont work with the 360!!!! :x

I bought the Logitech one in Gamestation for £5 about 9 months ago. It works well on the PS3 but is the best PC webcam I've ever seen! Low light capability on PC is superb.

how do you do that??
#14
just phone my local gamestation and they have one last silver one! lol but they couldnt find the price though. will pop down there n 'discuss' with the manager later. :) OP is there any chance that you have any picture of your receipt? Thanks!

Works fine on Mac's to if you use macam drivers which you can download for free here:
http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/

Great webcam the eyetoy's, well worth 50p!

I can vouch for the quality of the Namtai one. I'm using one for Skype on my PC.

Frame rate is good (jerky movements are fairly minimal), works well in low light too.

Only snag is that on Skype the video occasionally freezes (for me anyway) - not much of a problem though, just click 'hide video' and then click 'show video' and it's back!

edit: works fine for me on Burnout Paradise on PS3. Won't work with EyeCreate or any of those apps though :(

A useful program along with this is Dorgem. http://dorgem.sourceforge.net/
You can set it to motion capture and it'll save an image everytime the scene changes; either to local drive or via FTP upload.
I have my EyeToy watching my motorbike in our communal car park. 29kb each time someone goes near my bike I can handle :-) I just erase the folder contents when I get home.

Good find.
These come with a mic?
#19
Darn. Need one of these for my last trophy in burnout but no GameStations in NI. Still, hot deal.

How do you set up the camera? Is it wireless?

Nope, just using the USB cable. I might add that it's a very long cable - around two metres by my estimate. Camera can sit on the windowsill and watch the bike all day.

Milton Keynes store was charging £1. Still a steal at that though for 32bit users
#29
This is really hot !!! Would buy one or two straight away, but there are no GameStations around me unfortunately :-( Well, if anyone bought a spare one, I will pay a postage and the cameras price ;-) Well even with P & P it is a bargain

One example - sadly not too useful right now is my dad's weather station. His compression is set quite high though. Www.mugi.co.uk/g4led

I use one of these old PS2 EyeToys with Singstar on the PS3. The quality is 'ok', but nothing spectacular. I'm thinking about buying on the of the PS3 Eye Camera's. Can anyone comment on if it's worth shelling out for one or is the difference in quality between the EyeToy & Eye Camera not worth the £20?
#39
cheers for the quality :)
