HDV cassettes can store about 60 mins of HD footage.

Because DVD is probably the worst recording medium, with only media handling convenience in its favour.
DV tape has to be encoded/imported on to a computer, but currently still produces the best quality recording. No need to buy expensive H-def DV tapes either, standard ones work just as well.

1080i I believe - Sony have just released some new full HD camcorders - hence the prices, other major manufacturers are just releasing new full HD models also.

- incidentally don't record to DVD becasue you couldn't capture at HD spec, plus DVDs are bit rubbish to be honest. Most use HDD but these could fail, some use flash, but capacity can be an issue esp at full HD resolutions. mini DV is good - but people have gone off tape - so it's going to to die too.

Hitachi have just released a blu-ray DVD recorder - media will be expensive !!

What??????
Of course you can record HD material on to DVD, you just won't be able to record as much.
The type of media makes no difference it's just the size of the files - I.E dvd can store 4.7gb single and 8gb double where as blu ray is about 80gb.
So there is nothing stopping you recording 4.7gb of raw HD files on to a dvd, but you would need a PS3 or something to be able to play it.
If you covnvert is to Mpeg then yes you will lose all the HD content but that stans to reason.
