Sony HT-AS5 5.1 Home Cinema System

Sony's HT-AS5 5.1 channel satellite speaker surround sound system offers an excellent way of upgrading your home theatre setup to 5.1 digital sound, and is ready for a 3D signal when you next upgrade your television.
The HT-AS5 satellite speaker system comes with three HDMI connectors, and offers easy one cable connectivity from numerous sources to your 1080p Full HD television, and also offers 3D video pass through, when attached to a compatible 3D source. 24p True Cinema and x.v. Colour will also pass through the system with no problem.
True high definition surround sound from your Blu-ray discs is offered by the multi-channel Linear PCM, and an audio return channel via HDMI allows the sound from your television to be played out through your surround speakers.
To make life easy for you, the HT-AS5 system offers one-push automatic sound set-up, allowing flexible speaker placement and optimum sound quality.
The HT-AS5 uses a Digital Cinema Sound system that was developed in conjunction with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring the full power of cinema sound into your living room. It also offers a S-Master Digital Amplifier for faithful, crystal clear playback, as well as Dolby Digital, Prologic II and DTS Decoding.
You can add an optional extra that will allow the HT-AS5 to work with wireless rear speakers, while BRAVIA Sync allows you to have simple, one-touch control over all your BRAVIA-compatible devices.
The HTAS5 system offers a Night Mode, which reduces bass and enhances dialogue so you can watch later into the evening without upsetting the neighbours, while an RDS FM/AM radio tuner and Digital Media Port MP3 playback give you full access to your favourite music and broadcasts.
What’s in the box

Sony HTAS5 includes 5 Satellite Speakers
1 Subwoofer
Remote Control

Free delivery as always with amazon...might take a week or so due to time of year!

I am LIVID about this to be honest...ordered at 8am this morning for £179.99 and an hour later it was reduced to this price but card already charged and order too far on to cancel. Cannot believe it - does anyone know if it's possible to return and reorder this at lower price? Have e-mailed them about refunding the difference but doubt this will happen. Grrrr.

You're not alone - I got mine last week for the same price, but this was from Ask, an Amazon trader.

This is an amazing price for what is a fantastic speaker system IMHO.

As far as I know it has 2 opticals.

This is from a product review:

If you intend to use the HTAS5 with SKY HD, you need to be aware that like several other systems this system suffers from HDCP copy protection issues with the SKY HDMI output, this means that Sony do NOT recommend connecting SKY HD HDMI output through the HTAS5, rather they recommend that you connect the SKY HDMI output to your TV and then SKY HD optical output to the HTAS5 - fine, this will get you HD audio BUT will not give you BRAVIA sync or HDMI control between TV and HTAS5 so you will need to mute the TV audio manually, select TV input manually, HTAS5 input manually etc. needing multiple remotes - which kind of defeats the point of the HTAS5 having HDMI video pass through in the first place.

SKY are correct in that this is not a SKY related problem, SKY boxes communicate perfectly well with TVs, for some reason some audio system manufacturers are though having problems with SKY HD boxes HDMI output.

thanks for that. i just placed an order so i dont miss out.

I am a complete novice at surround system. Perhaps you could help me... I have a normal panaosonic tv with hdmi etc.

Should i connect the system direct to tv / ps3 using hdmi only? or would it be best for full 5.1 to use the optical cables?

I presume optical?
#10
To be honest there's been alot of debate surrounding (excuse the pun :)) the HDMI/Optical inputs and most people agree that HDMI is better for your sound. I would just go for the HDMI option, it's cheaper, easier and apparently better quality.

thanks. will see how i can set it up... Im hoping i can connect sky & my ps3 to the box and hopefully i wont have to fiddle about with changing sources / outputs to enable sound? im sure it will b fine.

FInal question if anyone has this already. The rear speakears it mentions wireless? Is this wireless ready or do i need to buy something additional to get this going??? i need wireless ideally for the rear
#12
No problem, I'm no expert either so if anyone can add to what I said please feel free.

This happened to me about 2 years ago when my parents bought a sony telly, loads of sob story emails and a couple of free phonecalls and they refunded the difference so keep trying and dont take no for an answer.
#14
Generally I just email them and ask for a refund or to return the item unopened - as yet they have always refunded the difference as it's less hassle for them bu it has been on smaller cash differences.
#15
Thanks for the input folks...still awaiting e-mail back..bloody xmas lol.

lol taken from house of fraser (£179.99) .. This is there description..

"Sony has unleashed a 3D friendly surround sound system to go with your 3D TV, so you can get the full cinema 3D experience in your living room without having to sit next to a sweaty fat bloke who insists on eating popcorn with his mouth open for the entire duration of the movie."

Brilliant system and amazing price. Ordered one from Ask last week at £185 which I thought was a good price at the time so a little p***ed at the moment.
#19
I was 5 minutes away from ordering this yesterday at 179.99

The upgrade device you need costs about £130. Not really worth it.
Download the manual from Sonys support site - it tells you about it in there.

This just gets better - called up Amazon and spoke to a lovely American girl who confirmed she has cancelled my original order and placed a new order at the lower price. BUT, my card had definitely already been charged (check online and my available balance had been cut down by the price of the item) and she told me it hadn't been. Really hope this money comes back on or I've paid £310 for this and will have to go through process of claiming money back. Grr again lol.

thanks joedredd.

I think cable extension & carpet come to mind lol :)

Cheers.

This happened to me earlier this year on a shaver, they just said they couldn't refund the difference due to supplier price changes blah blah. Anyway best thing to do is purchase the cheaper one, then return the one you purchased earlier. Their returns is very easy , you just print it off the labels online, and arrange collection from DHL, its a lot cheaper then if you were using another courier. Also they refund the payment quite quickly too, usually within a couple of days of them receiving.

Better than Onkyo HTX?

Crazy ass price! Question: There doesn't seem to be an amp? Where do you plug all of the cables (hdmi etc) into?

Everything is in the back of the sub-woofer/amplifier "big box".
eg http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-home-cinema-speaker/ht-as5
click the "PICTURES" link under the single photo - there's a handful of pix there including back of the subwoofer/amplifier tall/deep box.
Actually here's a direct link to the sockets etc view
http://sp.sony-europe.com/media/181/90258
And crikey - clicking the more features and spotting the antenna connections - it's really a RECEIVER as has FM/AM radio in it too.

Blimey OP great spot!
Dont forget Nectar estores for nearly a £2 saving with Nectar points too!
http://www.nectar.com/collect-online/retailer/amazon.points
Triple at the moment ie 3 points per £1, ie 1.5% saving.

The manual was found by JoeDredd in an older HUKD thread at:
http://support.sony-europe.com/Quickjump/default.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=HT-AS5

Just checked & Logitech Harmony software recognises AV Receiver - Sony - HT-AS5 too :3

Lots more comments on recent Bestbuy source thread at c£50 more

Amazon fast off the mark too : "preparing item for despatch" already!

You can return it under the Distance Selling Regulations, so order a second one at the lower price and then send the first back

Bagged a great bargain! Thanks OP :)

£167 now from a different seller or a massive wait for amazon!

Ye, I'm not waiting for 1 to 3 months. Great Deal though.
#35
looks like orders have been put in on mass. Hence stock limited.... Plenty of places have it at £179, like house of fraser etc. but no consalation for those who missed out... glad i took the plunge n bought straight away b4 reading reviews lol
#36
I normally hate one-box systems but at this price you can't go far wrong.
#37
Shame about the wait or I'd have snapped this up!
#38
not sure if this makes sense but when i ordered it it told me "Estimated delivery 2 Feb 2011 - 28 Mar 2011" WTF!
#39
Yeah that sounds like 1 to 3 months alright, I wouldn't mind a month but if it took 3 months that'd be too long!
#40
What inputs exactly does this have? I don't care much for HDMI, does it have traditional optical and 3.5mm?
