Sony HT-AS5 5.1 Home Cinema System

Sony's HT-AS5 5.1 channel satellite speaker surround sound system offers an excellent way of upgrading your home theatre setup to 5.1 digital sound, and is ready for a 3D signal when you next upgrade your television.
The HT-AS5 satellite speaker system comes with three HDMI connectors, and offers easy one cable connectivity from numerous sources to your 1080p Full HD television, and also offers 3D video pass through, when attached to a compatible 3D source. 24p True Cinema and x.v. Colour will also pass through the system with no problem.
True high definition surround sound from your Blu-ray discs is offered by the multi-channel Linear PCM, and an audio return channel via HDMI allows the sound from your television to be played out through your surround speakers.
To make life easy for you, the HT-AS5 system offers one-push automatic sound set-up, allowing flexible speaker placement and optimum sound quality.
The HT-AS5 uses a Digital Cinema Sound system that was developed in conjunction with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring the full power of cinema sound into your living room. It also offers a S-Master Digital Amplifier for faithful, crystal clear playback, as well as Dolby Digital, Prologic II and DTS Decoding.
You can add an optional extra that will allow the HT-AS5 to work with wireless rear speakers, while BRAVIA Sync allows you to have simple, one-touch control over all your BRAVIA-compatible devices.
The HTAS5 system offers a Night Mode, which reduces bass and enhances dialogue so you can watch later into the evening without upsetting the neighbours, while an RDS FM/AM radio tuner and Digital Media Port MP3 playback give you full access to your favourite music and broadcasts.
What’s in the box

Don't think so, I believe it has 3 HDMI inputs at the back of the subwoofer.

Anyone know what speaker stands these would fit on OK?

Looks good.

Is this too big for a medium sized bedroom? I want a nice surround but would prefer a 2.1 system. Anyone recommend one with optical input?

Got this for £185.99 from Amazon last week.

It is very good indeed for a 'normal' home user such as myself. I'm very happy for the price, it looks like a well built system, unlike the similar priced Onkyo which looked and felt cheap to me.

Does all that I need with 3 HDMI inputs, 3D support, Optical, etc.
Only thing is you need to have the sub near the TV for HDMI connections.

It says on the Best Buy Spec that this doesn't decode anything other than Dolby Pro Logic II. However, Sony site says it decodes Dolby Digital and DTS;

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-home-cinema-speaker/ht-as5/tab/technicalspecs

Looks great for the money, was thinking of an Okoyo 2.1 system for 200, but this is seriously tempting...

Does any one know if you can configure the sound delay and also increase certain speakers such as the centre speaker separately ?

Thanks

From sony: LPCM (2CH/5.1CH/7.1CH)
So should your bluray payer be able to decode DTS Master or DolbyTrue HD to linear PCM you'll get full HD audio output :op

Not even mildly amusing anymore, and why do you always have a pic of a scantily clad Wendy 'Eastenders' Richards in your profile?

Btw if anybodys interested in one of these with a blu-ray player you can get this for £149 when bought with any player at the Sony centre
#23
Can anybody tell me without going down the obvious line how this compares with the deal posted recently for the Onkyo 3305B (Pixmania pricematch Richer Sounds)? I am in the market for a decent surround sound but haven't got a clue.
Thanks

Stuff says
A stylish, affordable, 3D-friendly surround kit with immersive, if not audiophile quality, sound

Indeed it does.

On the Sony site it says back satellites can be made wireless. Presume you need an extra add on for this?

Not sure what the prices are at a Sony Centre, but this is an ideal partner and I suspect cheaper as a package? http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sony-bdp-s370-blu-ray-disc-player-9/831958

The fact that you either need long HDMI leads or have the sub near the TV would put me off buying this.

Anyone know if this will work without the rear surrounds plugged in if I wanted to use as a 3.1 for now? Just wondering how it will sound or whether the amp recognises the rears are absent...

It'll be fine, and a huge step up if you just have TV sound just now. My Sony has a setting for front speakers only, this may well have the same.

I want to know this also.

Would there be any repercussions i.e. not covering the intended full sound spectrum for e.g.?

I only need at max a 3.1 or 2.1 at the moment.

Thanks.

I think one of the sound field selections would do what you wish, or you could put the speakers side by side? It's (understandably) not designed for this in mind.
The manual is available on Sony's site here
Page 34 explains the modes available.

Will this work ok with a PS3?

Will this work ok with a PS3?

Yes it does. The PS3 auto detects supported sound modes when you reset your audio settings to output via HDMI.

I have this system and it works great with ps3.

You can alter any sync delays you get (not that I have 2) and you can also alter the volume of any speaker individually

You can also disable the rear speakers if you want.

It decodes DTS and DD

I have my PS3 (HDMI) and SkyHD (optical) hooked into it.

If anyone wants anymore info let me know :)

OK, so how much is a comparable Onkyo system going to cost?

SFBANKS, thanks for this! Can I ask, does the remote control that comes with this system also work on the PS3 from an operating the Blu Ray perspective? Thanks, Balstars!
